About the property

Houses, 9 Bedrooms + Lofts + Den, 7 Baths, (Sleeps 12-28).

Mountain Cleft Retreat, next door to Glacier National Park, is the perfect choice for your next 'escape the world' getaway. This secluded wilderness refuge is a quiet and lovely European style house set in the magnificent Montana mountain wilderness. A charming twenty-acre paradise, it is located just one mile from the wild and scenic Flathead River where the North Fork and Middle Fork converge, a popular spot to fish, whitewater raft, kayak, or canoe. Retreat accommodates up to 28 when the Alpine House, this listing, is combined with the Alpine Cottage, listing 451633, and the Glacier Chalet, listing 451634, on this same property. (See property diagram in photo section, next-to-last photo). Check with owner for availability of Alpine House.

The retreat is just eight miles from the West Glacier entrance to Glacier National Park. Breathtaking mountain views, wilderness solitude, abundant wildlife, herb and flower gardens, forests and meadows, combined with private, beautiful accommodations and every comfort to make you feel relaxed, revitalized, and pampered.

The retreat's secluded alpine wilderness location, bordering Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park, affords frequent opportunities to observe wildlife. Bear, moose, and deer are frequent visitors here, so be sure to bring your camera!

The Alpine House is one of 3 units onsite. The Alpine House has a sleeping capacity of 16. As indicated above, when combined with the Alpine Cottage and Glacier Chalet, the retreat can sleep 28 or more. Whether you are a family on vacation, or a larger group such as a family reunion or other special occasion, Mountain Cleft Retreat can serve your needs.

Bedrooms include a king, queens, and bunk beds, as well as sofa beds. Private bedrooms have beautifully hand-painted wall art, down comforters, and decorator linens. The den has a gas log fireplace, a large sheepskin rug, comfortable fireplace chairs, and two couches. The den exits to a beautiful private garden with grill, and umbrella table and chairs for relaxation and eating.

A fully equipped kitchen and dining facilities are available for guest use. We also provide high-speed wireless Internet.

Upon entering the Alpine House, stairs and an arched doorway transport you to the spacious, romantic Old World style king bedroom suite with down comforter, bedroom library, and reading chair. The handsome corner wardrobe provides a place for clothing, and windows on both sides of the room look out onto the surrounding Montana woods. This room has an elegant private bathroom with 2-person whirlpool tub.

A few steps up from this bedroom is the Great Room with cathedral ceiling, living room with overstuffed red velvet furniture, a two story stone fireplace with a gas log fire, and a full bathroom. A balcony off the Great room overlooks the front flower gardens. Graceful arched doorways, stained glass windows, hand painted wall art, tapestry rugs, an iron chandelier, and skylights makes this room a breathtaking hideaway.

Stairs up from the Great Room take you to an upper loft, a combination library/bedroom/business center, with a queen sofa bed, desk, skylights, and windows overlooking spectacular mountain, forest, and meadow views.

Washers and dryers are available in the retreat for guests to use as needed.

Wonderful visit to beautiful Montana!

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of 12 stay here over Labor Day weekend and we couldn't have been happier. The house is large and can easily accommodate a large group. The location of the house feels like you are in the middle of nowhere, yet only a 15 minute drive to the park and a grocery store. We saw deer and even a little black bear right on the property. I highly recommend staying here, everything was just wonderful!

Great Time at Mountain Cleft Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in the Alpine House at Mountain Cleft Retreat. We were a family of 11 that found the house very comfortable for all of us. We found the house to be fully equipped with all the features that we would have wanted. We appreciated meeting Clyde and Melissa several times during the week. We spent most of the week in the park--absolutely gorgeous! The weather was unseasonably warm but we were able keep the house sufficiently cool during the day especially in the four bedrooms downstairs.

weird floorplan, cold wet basement bedrooms, hot loft

  • 2 of 5

Glacier national park is amazing, we had a wonderful time. The house was adequate for our needs, but had a odd setup. There are 4 rooms in the basement that are cold and damp. We hesitated to turn the heat on because it was 100 degrees in the loft upstairs. The room with the bunk beds, as well as the loft, have no doors. You are sharing the house with other people that may be above or below you. There are 3 bathrooms 1 in the basement for 4 bedrooms, one in the beautiful master suite and one for the loft area. We asked for more toilet paper for the basement, and we were questioned about our usage, we bought our own. After we left we were accused of stealing a bumper sticker left on the dining room table. Overall, the house was clean and the area is beautiful. We would come again, but pick a different place to stay.

Disappointed

  • 2 of 5

We stayed here for a combined family vacation. When we arrived we did not have any water. Throughout the week the water was "fixed" but showers had to be taken one at a time which is extremely inconvenient when we had 16 people staying at the cabin. We cleaned the whole cabin before leaving and still have not received our deposit back after attempting to contact the owner multiple times.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We came up for a week to stay at Glacier National Park. We had 8 people (4 adults and 4 kids), and some additional relatives joined us for part of the stay, renting out the smaller part of the house as well. We have stayed at multiple properties through VRBO over the years, and this was the best maintained property we have stayed with. Everything was in good shape, clean, and worked well. The bed in the master bedroom was so comfortable! We had plenty of space and the boys enjoyed the bunk bed room (complete with a basket of wooden blocks). The house was quiet, the property is surrounded by woods and there is no appreciable road noise (there is an occasional train, and though I could hear it, it was not loud enough to be bothersome). The kitchen is small but we cooked a full dinner for 52 people in it one night without a problem, and the dining table fits quite a few around. The patio and deck areas provide good outdoor seating as well. There was plenty of space, so everyone could find somewhere to have some quiet time when they needed it. The house is 10-15 minutes from West Glacier, it was an easy drive and our host provided directions to the park from the house. Columbia Falls is 15 minutes away if you need a grocery store. The property is also about 5 minutes from the middle fork of the flathead river, which you will pass over on your way to Glacier. It is very cold water! but people do rafting/canoeing and swimming there (we found Lake McDonald in Glacier Park had warmer water). Overall I would definitely recommend this property if you have plans in Glacier National Park, or the surrounding area.

Very comfortable. If you have elderly guests you will want to rent the cottage as there is no bathrh

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful stay. We rented both the house and attached cottage and it was perfect for our combined families. The proximity to Glacier Park, hiking, white water rafting, and renting ATV's made everything so easy. We were close enough to Columbia Falls to eat out or get take out and our day trip horseback riding and boating on Flathead Lake was easily doable. The views from the cottage deck made evenings remarkable. The house had everything we needed for a wonderful week in Montana!
