About Wayne Salk/Mary Ely
My husband, Wayne, is an avid birdwatcher and has a backyard birding business ( I am an artist and crafter. We live in Sebastopol and the house in Quincy is our second home. Our granddaughter graduated from Feather River College last year, where she was an equine studies major. I went to UC Forestry Camp for a number of summers to study native plant populations. I also went to the Oakland Art Camp one summer, so Quincy is a place I came to love.
Wayne Salk/Mary Ely purchased this House in 2017
Why Wayne Salk/Mary Ely chose Quincy
I fell in love with this vintage midcentury house the minute we walked in. We are originally from the midwest, and the inside of the house reminded me of all the old summer houses on the many lakes in Wisconsin & Michigan that we used to stay in when I was growing up. It had all the original redwood paneling on the walls and old wood flooring. It had been loved when it was built, but had been allowed to deteriorate over the years. It needed to be loved again. We gutted the bathroom and the kitchen and completely redid them, floors, walls, fixtures, appliances and cabinetry. We replaced rotting wood on the exterior of the house and put siding on the carport which only had plywood. We built the front railing on the walkway. We have just started restoring the yard.
What makes this House unique
The biggest benefit to the location is that the house is on the "cool" side of town. It can be 104 degrees anywhere else in Quincy and it will be heavenly cool on Davis Street. This is because the street backs up to the high hills of the Plumas National Forest. We have ceiling fans but have no need for an air conditioner. Another benefit is that it is just off of Bucks Lake Road. We love going up to Bucks Lake . Just turn left at the bottom of Davis Street and follow the road for about 20 minutes. The most beautiful lake will come into view. That is Bucks Lake. Also Autumn leaves are incredible Throughout Plumas County. Keep in mind that at Christmastime you can get a permit for $10 and cut down any tree along that route. We turned off at Snake lake last year and found the "perfect tree".

Wonderful and Cozy Cottage
We try to visit a relative yearly in Quincy but finding a pet-friendly place in this town is impossible...until we found Wayne and Mary's cottage! This trip was the absolute best because their cottage was within walking distance of my relative's and the downtown area AND was exactly as they described and more! They really thought of everything a traveler might need or want. When we stayed here, it was between 88-90 every day yet the house was just as they described...nice and cool, all the time!
They have done an amazing job remodeling the kitchen and bathroom while maintaining the original character (wood paneled walls and built in closets and drawers) of the house which I felt gave it that true cottage feel. They have decorated it so that it feels inviting the moment you walk in. The furniture is laid out so that it's comfy and functional all at the same time, which is important for when you need space to lay out your fishing gear and prepare for a day of fishing in the nearby ponds, streams, and lakes. The kitchen is very nicely remodeled and stocked with every possible utensil and tool you can think of and they also have a full size washer and dryer and provide a BBQ grill. Oh, and for those cool nights indoors, they have popcorn for you for an impromptu movie night and coffee in the fridge for your early morning fish call!
They did a wonderful job updating the bathroom and the plumbing provided hot water quickly and with nice pressure. There were only two of us however they provided us with four sets of plushy towels too which is so nice after a long day out on the lake or hiking! And, they have a night light so that those who need time to get oriented to a different home layout won't stumble to the bathroom in the middle of the night!
The bedrooms are cozy with plenty of room to move about in and the beds are Queen-sized with Tempurpedic mattresses and just enough blankets to keep you warm when the nights chill down. Other small but important thoughtful touches included having plenty of beach towels available in case we wanted to have our fur-kid join us on the couch or on the bed AND allowing us to have our fur-kid on the furniture at all! We brought our own king sheet and coverings but thought this was very thoughtful of them as they know how us animal lovers are!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in their cabin and we will be back again. Thank you so much Wayne and Mary for sharing your beautiful cottage with us!
Very nicely renovated home
We spent the weekend in Quincy on a dual sport motorcycle trip and the cottage worked out perfectly. Walking distance to downtown and restaurants and a nice quiet neighborhood. We will defiantly use the place again if available.
We loved it!
Wayne & Mary we’re wonderful! The house was adorable and just what we needed for our weekend stay! The cottage was walking distance to downtown Quincy and only 15 minutes to Bucks Lake. Highly recommend!
Cute, clean and convenient!
Loved this cute house! It’s on a nice quiet street. The house was clean, nice newly remodeled kitchen with everything you would need. It was one hundred degree weather while we were there, so it got a little warm for us with no A/C, but grateful for the ceiling fans in the bedrooms. Other than that, it was just really nice. We loved going up to Buck’s lake, just a thirty minute drive to cool off... what a beautiful area! The owner, Mary, is great at correspondence and very friendly and informative. I would recommend staying at this cute, clean and convenient home!
Just exactly perfect
Mary communicated with us in a most helpful and friendly way, the house was immaculate, comfortable, and most convenient for our attendance at High Sierra Music Festival.
