About Lisa Farmer
After growing up in upstate NY, I moved here in the 70s and fell in love with Virginia. This area reminds me a lot of where I was raised, and the people are so kind and receptive. My husband, a builder, and I found this old house, about to be torn down, and rescued it after doing some deed researching and discovering it was built by one of the county's founding fathers. I love history - especially early American history - and I'm happy to share this place we have been blessed to call ours with you.
Lisa Farmer purchased this Cabin in 1993
Why Lisa Farmer chose Troutville
We bought our farm in 1990 so we could have horses. We live right up the driveway from the cabin, and so it was the perfect place to relocate it once we found it. I had a gift shop in it for years, and then it was a tea tavern for over a decade. We decided once the tea room moved, to make it a vacation rental so that others could enjoy it's uniqueness, and find out more about the history of not just our county, but the early history of our nation as well.
What makes this Cabin unique
After we had purchased the cabin, I came to find out that the father of the man who built the cabin, and my fifth great grandfather led Revolutionary War troops together!! I am from NY and had no idea I had roots in Botetourt County. How exciting it was for me to find this out - and to know that perhaps my great granddad (who was a constable at that time) stopped and had a little grog in this cabin on his way to the courthouse in Fincastle! Fate?? I think not!!

Cabin in Troutville
The cabin was exquisite! It was very well appointed and extremely cozy and comfortable. It was also very clean and well maintained. It felt like it had been especially prepared for us. The furniture was very, very comfortable. I would recommend this to anyone who has high standards but loves the feel of a historic cabin!
Thank you for your kind words, and appreciation of our old place, Brian. Hoping to meet you all soon at the winery!
Unique property w/ thoughtful owners
This place was so cool - takes you back in time. And we really appreciated the cleanliness, as well as the extra touches. Beds were comfortable, and kitchen had everything we needed. Thoughtful owners with great/helpful communication. The only thing to be aware of is proximity to the road. It wasn't a problem for us, but perhaps if you're a light sleeper.
I read the previous review (which hopefully VRBO removes at some point) and have to say...I simply can not believe it. And what horrible luck for the owners that, after that awful experience, we broke their futon :( HOWEVER, we notified them upon departure and offered to pay. As any decent renter should. We had great communication in discussing how to resolve, and came to a mutually satisfying and reasonable agreement.
These owners made us feel, in more ways than one, like we were distant friends or relatives. We wouldn't hesitate to return!
Friendly and responsible guests like you all are always welcome. We enjoyed hosting you, broken futon and all, lol!! As Laura Ingalls would say, all’s well that ends well. Many thanks for choosing to stay with us, Pam!
My wife had a medical emergency while in the home and the owner flipped out on us. We had to leave hastily and get her to the hospital as she was bleeding. The owner leveled accusations at us regarding the blood on the bed and one towel we used to stop her bleeding and clean up, then said we must have cracked a small pane in an upstairs window? Really? No such thing occurred. She even called the police to make a report for damaged to her bedsheets and towel. She was insensitive and completely unprofessional. STAY AWAY! She also kept our whole deposit and even demanded more money.
There are plenty of gorgeous and historic places to stay while enjoying the Blue Ridge Mountains and surrounding area. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM!
Sadly this review is full of untruths. This guest never once mentioned his wife having a medical emergency in any of the correspondence following his departure. We tried to contact him before and during his stay via texting to make sure everything was alright, and he never responded. It wasn't until hours after he had checked out that he answered my text to say that the cabin was great and thanked me for the extra things we had provided. Why wouldn't he have told us they had to rush to the hospital and apologize for the state the cabin was left in? He never brought it up in any of the VRBO message correspondence that his wife had a medical emergency. He didn't bring it up until this review - and after we told him we were keeping the deposit to pay for the damage.
We ask that our guests leave things the way they find them. I was taken aback when I walked through the door later that day. Sparing the details let it suffice to say the cabin was left in such a horrific and disturbing state, that we felt compelled to call the police who felt it best to do a full report. We never accused him of anything. And again, when I asked him about it he never mentioned having to rush his wife to the hospital. His comment was "I paid a cleaning fee". I withheld his deposit to cover the damages, and never asked for a penny more. I am new to short term renting, but I wish I had checked him out better beforehand rather than just relying on VRBO star ratings. I never would have rented to him knowing what I came to find out. He was a disgusting renter, disrespected our home, and took no responsibility for his actions.
Like Stepping Back in Time (But with every modern luxury!)
What a magical place! If you love history, you’ll love this gorgeous and charming cabin. It was perfect for our family of five. When we arrived, there were freshly baked banana cranberry muffins on the counter to welcome us! The wonderful hosts, the Farmers, even graciously allowed us to have a small gathering after my Mom’s memorial service in Roanoke. We also took full advantage of their pet care while there. They kept our two doggies in the basement of their home which is right behind the cabin. They loved our Georgie Girl and Atticus and treated them like family! The dogs loved playing with their French Bulldogs in the beautiful fenced pasture. We wholeheartedly endorse this amazing property! We hope to get back there soon for another wonderful visit!
We were so happy to share our cabin with you all, and are looking forward to your next visit!
Beautifully + lovingly renovated 250 yr old cabin
This historic and charming cabin is tastefully renovated and decorated. Lisa, the host, is super helpful and responsive making our stay even more wonderful. The cabin proved to be a perfect home-base for a week of hiking Tinker Cliffs, the Carvin Reservoir, and the Greenfield Preserve. We had several events at Hollins University too and this cabin is only about 15 minutes away. The local restaurants didn't disappoint - we recommend Tizzone Pizza and Local Roots. The cabin sits closer to the road so I wouldn't recommend it for dogs that aren't good off the leash.
We couldn’t have asked for better first guests, or a better behaved dog! We have decided to offer our personal kennel for guests wishing to bring dogs, but Walter was awesome!
