House, 3 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 4 Baths, Sleeps 15
The Bearcub Chalet, built in 2001, is a beautiful 3 bedroom, 4 bathroom 'A-frame' mountain home with large recreation room, loft and redwood deck with spa. Situated on a hillside in the midst of tall pines at Blue Lake Springs resort in Arnold (elevation 4000 feet) near Calaveras Big Trees State Park, it is easily accessible by a level driveway even in snow.
The resort's facilities at Snowflake Lodge, which is a two-minute walk from the chalet, include tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. During the summer the pool, snack bar and a lake with a sandy beach are open for a small daily fee.
Outdoor movies and children's supervised arts and crafts programs are available from May to September. On weekends all year round the restaurant offers excellent dining open exclusively to residents and renters of the community. Reservations advised.
We offer special rates in the Fall for concerts at Ironstone Vineyards and fall harvest season. The cabin is only 20 minutes from Murphys, which now boasts many tasting rooms for the wonderful award winning local wineries.
Bear Valley ski resort, 20 miles to the east, is known as a family-friendly, lower-cost resort, which offers excellent downhill and cross country skiing for all skill levels. Other popular winter activities are sledding, snowshoeing, snowboarding and snowmobiling.
Activities in the surrounding national forests include fishing, hiking among ancient redwoods, mountain biking on established trails, rafting on the Stanislaus river and canoeing on crystalline lakes. Among other attractions of the area are the famous Moaning and Mercer Caverns, historic Gold Rush towns, winery tours, several golf courses, as well as swimming, boating, fishing and water skiing on the New Melones reservoir.

About Stephen D'Andrea
We live on the Peninsula and are happy that Hwy 205 through Tracy has finally been widened.
Stephen D'Andrea purchased this House in 2000
Why Stephen D'Andrea chose Arnold
We liked the year round activities. Bear Valley and Arnold have a much quieter feel compared to Lake Tahoe. The town of Murphys keeps getting better and better and there are many wineries in the area as well.
What makes this House unique
We love being able to walk down to the pool and lake at Snow Flake resort. We also enjoy the convenience of the restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights. Tennis courts are almost always available. We kayak and White Pines Lake is only 10 mins away, and Utica, Union and Spicer reservoirs are less than an hour from our cabin. It is great to be at 4,000 feet elevation as the heavy snow storms usually do not affect us at this level. We are close to Arnold (Sarafina's is the great new restaurant in town) and Murphys is a short trip down the hill.

Sports & Adventure Activities
We had a great long-weekend at the Bearcub Chalet! After fighting traffic to Tahoe for the past few years, we decided to try out Bear Valley for skiing for the kiddos. Hotel options are pretty limited but we were happy to see quite a few houses on HomeAway. The Bearcub Chalet had great reviews so we and another family decided to give it a try.
-Very responsive and reasonable owner! Stephen responded to our questions promptly and was a pleasure to work with, including confirming kitchen appliances and making sure that sleds were left out for our use.
-Good location: just 2 quick turns off the main highway through Arnold. About 20-25 minutes from Bear Valley. Tennis courts & swimming pool nearby.
-Lots of room, including the beds, bunk beds, pull out sofas, upstairs TV area, full basement game room (pool/ping pong table & Foosball table), and large deck with hot tub. We had 10 people in our party (including 2 toddlers) and there was plenty of room for all.
-Wood burning fireplace
A few negatives:
-The rate was fairly high for the area, but not entirely unexpected given the peak time.
-Modest wear & tear on the carpet, furniture, etc, but still above average cleanliness.
All in all, a nice find. Thanks Stephen!
We enjoyed our stay at the Bear Cub Chalet during our Thanksgiving family reunion in the Arnold area! It was very convenient, comfortable, nicely kept and decorated with lots of bears! The grandkids enjoyed the game room especially the ping pong table! Homeaway and the owners were very efficient, pleasant and easy to work with! We were very grateful they shared their home with us. We would re-rent this property!
Great place for families!
This is great place for families. The kitchen/dining area/living room has an open floor plan and there's plenty of space around the house to read, watch movies and play games. Big Trees State Park is super close and has a flat 1.5m loop for families with younger children. Stephen responded to my emails right away and the house is well-organized. Easy drive from the Bay Area and a beautiful location. Solid choice for a weekend away with a few families.
Great House in Blue Lake Springs
We enjoyed our stay at the Bearcub Chalet and really loved how close it was to the Snowflake Lodge!! This is a great house for either summer or winter trips to Arnold. Watch out for the bears though! ;-)
Lots of bears!!!
Spent 4 nights here! Chalet was very nice minus a couple of unexpected mishaps. Stephen was very quick to respond to emails . Housekeeping could step it up a notch! Very hot week and little air moving. But my family had a good time just being together! Granddaughter loved the bears!!!
Great Vacation Venue
Bear Cub Chalet was a wonderful choice for our extended family gathering. There was plenty of space and activities for our grandkids to have fun, while adults visited, cooked, enjoyed the hot tub, etc. The owners, Stephen and Vivienne, and property manager Scott were very helpful in answering questions that arose. Having easy access to Blue Lake Springs pool, basketball court, lakes, etc. was great!! A well-stocked kitchen with a variety of cookware, utensils, and condiments was very helpful.
The charm of the vast bear collection of stuffed animals, carvings, and figurines kept us all entertained! One down side, however, was the high temperatures left the upstairs quite warm until about 11 pm in spite of using fans, etc. Cell phone access was unavailable until we got inside to turn on WIFI, so I had a little trouble getting to emails containing door code when we first arrived, and had to drive back to town to get to emails!!
The binders filled with local activities gave us a huge selection of places to visit, things to do in the surrounding area!!
Bear Cub Chalet was a wonderful home base for our visit to the area!
