About Daytona Beach: Daytona Beach developed at the turn of the 20th century as a vacation retreat for the country's ultra-wealthy, including the Vanderbilts, Flaglers, Astors, and John D. Rockefeller, whose home 'Casements' now serves as the Daytona Beach Community Enrichment Center. Early automotive pioneers drove their motor cars up and down the hard-packed sand beach, earning it the nickname, 'The Birthplace of Speed.' (More about Daytona Beach history.) Driving is still permitted on parts of Daytona Beach, but cars are prohibited at the northern end of the beach.
Things To Do: Daytona Beach is located on either side of the Halifax River, which is part of the Intracoastal Waterway (a series of federally maintained navigation channels extending from Norfolk, VA to Miami, FL). There are wonderful walking trails along the river, and the neighborhood all around Starfish Cottage is great for walking and cycling.
There are a number of great parks and recreational areas in the vicinity, including Tomoka State Park, which offers a variety of outdoor activities, including camping, fishing, and canoeing. (More about area parks.) Great fishing is also to be had at the 1,540 foot Granada Pier in Cassen Park. Deep sea fishing is also available from nearby Ponce Inlet, where you can find a number of fishing charter services. Daytona Beach also has some fine sporting facilities.
The Beach: The great Daytona Beach area provides even more diversions, including: The Boardwalk (a historic amusement area with arcades and shops); several golf courses (or mini golf for the kids), Daytona Iceplex (ice skating) and Skate City Roller Rink, greyhound racing, horseback riding, and a variety of river and ocean cruise opportunities.
Benita I just wanted to express our extreme satisfaction with the accommodations of your Starfish Cottage and the professional manner in which our reservation and stay was handled. We may recall we were in town for the 50th running of the Daytona 500 (February 2008), a very busy and event filled week. The location of the cottage was perfect in getting to and from the race track. It also provided a very quite and peaceful setting for the time before and after the race. The cottage is appointed very well and was very comfortable. Should we have occasion to be in the Daytona area in the future, you will be the first I call to see if the Starfish is available. First of all, thank you very much for being flexible and letting Ken and I reschedule our vacation from July 09 to Sept. 09 after Ken had to go into the hospital for heart bypass surgery just days before our vacation was to start. We absolutely loved the Starfish Cottage! All we needed to bring was our clothes and shop for groceries when we got there. Everything else was provided for us, even the beach towels. The cottage looks exactly as what you see in the pictures only more beautiful when you get there. Clean as a pin, decorated to perfection and the pool, patio and yard are landscaped beautifully. Loved the beds, slept like a baby every night. Our little chihuahua's loved going in and out of the doggie door and down the ramp, we loved not having to get out of the pool to open the door to let them out. We couldn't have found a more relaxing place to stay than here. My best friend, Alyson, also came with us and she and I made good use of the beautiful pool area every single day. There is a nice park close by where we walked to several times, as Ken was building his strength back after his surgery. A fresh seafood market with a restaurant next door, is walking distance away which we took full advantage of, and cooked on the backyard grill also provided in the patio area. Daytona Beach is only five miles away too. We are definitely coming back here next summer and we will bring our bicycles next trip to ride in the neighborhood and surrounding areas. I would highly recommend this cottage to all my friends and family for a relaxing vacation. Thanks again, for your excellent customer service and flexibility with us during Ken's medical emergency.
Thank you because you shared with us the Starfish Cottage ... everything was clean and the backyard is a piece of Heaven !!!
Wonderful home to spend time with family! Loved the resort like feel in the backyard! Will be back!
It was a wonderful stay at the cottage. The cottage was very clean and had all the amenities one would need. We spent most of our time in the pool relaxing. I even read an entire book and started on another, something I have not done in a while. The dogs loved the yard. Mr. Jingles spent his day hunting the lizards and Daisy enjoyed hiding in the bushes and laying in the sun.
Restaurants were close and convenient and was the only reason we left the cottage. And of coarse to get ice cream.
It was a great escape from the hustle of life and we look forward to doing it again.
Let me start by saying, we've done vacation before...but not like this. This is the first time we decided to rent a house, a family of 4 +1 friend enjoyed a wonderful vacation at the starfish cottage. We've always stayed in hotels due to points/rewards in the past, but with the addition of one more traveler, we decided to look into houses. This one had been on my list for sometime, as it is unique, and as we found upon arrival...well maintained. The pictures are an actual representation of what you'll find...the photos are not out of date. One exception...the couch in the living room is now a full sized couch.
Location: A mile from direct beach access (drive on the famous stretch of Atlantic Florida Beach), a few blocks from the police station, a nice quiet neighborhood...so easy to get to anything you want. There is a 24 hr Walmart just a few minute drive for anything you may need, have forgotten, or whatever. Many great local and national chain restaurants nearby.
The House/Pool: We spent the first 6 1/2 hours of vacation just relaxing in the pool. I woke each morning to a bowl of oatmeal and coffee...and enjoyed it on the porch love seat...then jumped in the pool for a soak. No one else was up, peace and quiet like I haven't had in sometime. Turn on the waterfall and experience total relaxation and tranquility. Totally totally private...a small secluded location in the middle of town.
Now we did have five people (young son slept on the couch), and in a pinch I think a couple more could be accommodated (air mattress)...but this is up to your level of comfort. I would say this ideally is suited for no more than 4 adults.
Plenty of kitchen space and seating.
The bathroom is big and spacious...not small or confined as you may expect in a cottage with PLENTY of places to hang towels for each person. Each bedroom also has a separate place to hang items up...each of four people would have their own set of pegs to hang their robe, PJ's, etc. Ample closet space as well.
My compliments to the designer of the pool. There are small features of the pool that make this such a smart design. Easy access from either end, a small ledge/seat on the deep end that when seated allows the water to sooth you up to your shoulders/neck area. The splash area/shallow area under the umbrella in about 8 in. deep. Total depth is 5 1/2 ft deep at the deepest point...plenty of room to enjoy a swim or just pool play. We spent hours hanging out here.
Their decorating is perfect and I have a lot of same things in my own home which made us all laugh. It's fully stocked . All you need is a bathing suit ! It's close to the beach and every resturant imaginable is close by as well as shopping ! Will def be back .
