Our year-round retreat is located on the waterfront of Farlain Lake near Penetanguishene, Ontario. From the cottage it takes only a few short steps to the sandy beach and into the crystal clear lake. The temperature of the water is perfect for a dip or for lounging on the floats that are provided. The shallow beach is ideal for families with children as they can be supervised from shore, as well as from the upper level deck that overlooks the lake front.
The view from the deck over the lake is stunning, especially in the quiet morning hours when you want to enjoy the sunrise. From early morning to late afternoon the sun is shining on the beach area as well the deck, but oak and birch trees can provide some welcome shade.
Guests are welcome to bring their jet skis or boats, which they can lower into the lake on a nearby ramp. Awenda Provincial Park is nearby, and guests can hike and bike on the trails within, or swim in Georgian Bay from the beaches within the park. In the winter the avid snowmobilers and cross-country skiers have direct access to groomed trails.
Nearby Penetanguishene and Midland offer shopping, entertainment, museums and other attractions for all ages and tastes.
All the comforts of home! Great view, great beach and private. This place is ideal for a true relaxing vacation.
We just returned from a week at this cottage on Lake Farlain. It was a low-key family vacation with our 2-year-old twins and their grandparents, though we did have a few additional family members stay a couple of nights at a time. For the most part, we all fit comfortably on the upper/main level of the cottage in the 3 spacious bedrooms, updated bathroom, living room and kitchen areas. However, the nights that we did have additional guests, we were required to use the fourth bedroom located on the lower level of the cottage.
I cannot say enough about how pleased we were with the beach front and lake. It was much better than I had even anticipated. The lake is relatively small, though large enough for power boating, waterskiing, and jet skis. Very calm and shallow, sandy water leading to deep enough water to swim at the end of the dock. Our toddlers absolutely loved playing in the sand and wading in and out of the water without us having to be hypervigilant. The property the cottage is on is fairly large and private as well with no immediate neighbours to one side and several cottages fairly well spaced out to the opposite side.
The cottage came equipped with many staples that could be needed, like cleaning supplies, toys and games, lots of towels, and most everything you would need for cooking in the kitchen. The cleaner had done an immaculate job prior to our arrival as well. I had no complaints about the main level of the cottage at all!
However, the main problem we experienced was with the basement/4th bedroom area. It appeared fine, but smelled and felt damp right off the bat. However, when we did have a few extra bodies visiting at night, we quickly learned that there is a major earwig/bug problem in the basement that came out at night. They were everywhere... coming out of the ceiling tiles and lights above the bed and throughout the basement! Our guests actually moved up to the living area floor their first night and set up their tent outside on the second night because that was preferable to the "fourth bedroom". We are all well experienced with spending time up north and cottaging, and recognize there are always bugs to a certain extent, but this was well above and beyond anything we have ever experienced! I really feel this cottage should be advertised as only a 3-bedroom and priced accordingly for that reason! Other than that, we had a fantastic trip!
I would replace steps from the deck to yard as they are steep and dangerous though.
