About the Property
In town large lot on river & view of Mt. Tom: 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, Sleeps 4.
The Cottage was rebuilt in the 1970's above the 1840 cobble stone foundation and beams. With original chimney in place, the structure was built with a look of the past including hone beams and rich amber pine ceilings throughout the first floor. Recent renovation added wide plank pine flooring in upstairs bedrooms hand finished and salvaged from a 1792 farmhouse in S Woodstock. Spruce from a 1840 church was used to refinish the upstairs hall and stairs. The downstairs is scheduled for late next year with the same wood. The color and light play across the floors add a touch of awe and the desire to not want to leave!
For more relaxation, fun and activities step outside for a walk into the Woodstock Village. To start the day, a favorite is stroll to the covered bridge with a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate.... perfect! The home is only 5 doors down from the Town Hall, home to The Pentangle Arts Theatre. The non profit organization offers year round entertainment from world class live performances to weekend movie nights! A few more doors down is the town green surrounded by historic homes with preserved charm and a step back in time. Several are home to professional artists inspired by local setting. Every changing season generates new life to adorn landscape for breathless images. At the edge of the green is the downtown area. Here you will find only local proprietors offering a taste of Vermont. Shops, cafe's and restaurants offer plenty to do in the town. There is always something to do in Woodstock with an active Chamber of Commerce and non-profit organizations.
During the warmer seasons, enjoy the scheduled event on the green including the Farmers' Market, Lunch on the Green and periodic concerts. Major holiday's are celebrated with parades around the green and in December, the Annual Wassail Festival offers a timeless journey to a Currier & Ives Christmas experience. This 3 day event offers a full menu of fun and activities including a tour of homes, parade, bonne fire and caroling on the green, Christmas reading for the children and The Ten, a popular music group of tenor out of New York City performing at the local Congregational Church. This is a must even for everyone!
Rich in history, the town is home to the Billings-Marsh-Rockefeller Park & Museum located at the edge of town. The local historic society housed downtown will provide history of the area and a schedule events including home tours.
Cape Serenity is central to all there is to do away from Woodstock. To the east is the town of Quechee, home to Simon Pierce glassblowing and restaurant. Be sure to go for lunch and sit in the sun room cantilevered over the Ottauaquechee River. Be sure to visit the Quechee Gorge, Antiques shops and Cabot Cheese outlet. A must visit in the country is Sugarbush Farms, an active farm fun for all offering tasting and sales for their local cheeses and maple syrup. Further east are Hanover and White River Junction, NH. Visit Dartmouth college for its rich history and sites along with an arts theatre and local restaurants. The canoe club just over the bridge to the left even rents out canoes for a trip along the Connecticut River. We even took our Yorkie who commanded the boat!
To the north is Norwich, Vermont. A small, quaint town with a have to visit country grocery and hardware store with just about everything. Summer concerts and flea market with local food and crafts and King Arthur Flour restaurant and kitchen store (be sure to visit the deli for lunch and pastries) are enough to put this town on the Places to go list. To the west be sure to make dinner reservations at the Barnard Inn... with picturesque setting and home this rural Barnard Restaurant offers fine food and a pot roast like none other! To the west along Rt. 4 is the Killington Ski resort. Including the immediate area to Woodstock there are 5 ski areas in addition to cross country skiing and horse drawn sleigh rides (perfect for a wedding engagement proposal!) To the southwest is the town of Weston, a postcard community home to the Vermont Country Store and picture perfect town center. Further are the Okemo Ski resort and Manchester Vermont with its outlet shops and more to do. Along the way and if you look carefully, you will find a local country store with fresh pies for sale made with what's in season!
For a perfect location, unique and peaceful journey to simpler times, let Cape Serenity Cottage be your destination of choice.

Why the Owner Chose Village of Woodstock, Woodstock, VT, USA:
Location, location, location! Everything there is to do is either on the property or walking distance within the town of Woodstock. There are no franchise chains in the town affording it to keep its rich history and beauty. With something to do all year, there is no reason to leave. Mash Billings Mansion, Mt. Tom, Gillingham's, The Pentangle Arts and Woodstock historical society are just a few elements that maintain the town's quintessential look and feel that embodies peace and strengthens the soul.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
We fell in love with the home for its peaceful, elegant charm in addition to the beautiful gardens an access to the Woodstock village. The large yard, access to the river and being central to surrounding communities, ski areas and country roads were a must for every season. The house is easy to maintain and appreciated for its fit into the local community and region. The house is the old carriage house to the 3 story brownstone next door built in 1840. The structure was torn down in the 1970's above the basement cobbles and honed beams to erect the present day cape cod style house there today. With original basement and chimney in tact, the rest of the house has modern amenities. To keep with the town, large beams and pine were used for the ceiling on the first floor. Our goal in keeping with the town is to replace the flooring with vintage wood. This Fall we replaced the upstairs carpet with wide pine planks we 'rescued' from a 1792 S Woodstock farmhouse just prior to demolition. We are in awe at the results! Next year we are to replace the wood vinyl downstairs with wood recovered from an 1840's church just north of Norwich, Vermont. Our goal is to preserve the antiquity of this home in every way we can in harmony with modern amenities. We desire everyone who stays there to enjoy the experience as much we.
