Camogli is a small, unspoiled fishing village tucked into a cove just the other side of the Portofino Penninsula. This is an alive Italian Village and a favorite spot for Italian's. We first visited Camogli in 1992 and fell in love with charm of this old village lined with pastel 'Trompe l'oeil' buildings. It was a dream come true to finally buy and restore an apartment right on the water and live in the heart of Camogli where we could enjoy the village to the fullest. The apartment has four large windows from which the Ocean, Camogli, the village of San Rocco, the Monte di Portofino and the 'Golfo Paradiso' can be seen.
The town has an excellent beach, and a small fishing Port where fresh fish can be purchased directly from the boats or from the local fish shops nearby.
There are many wonderful trails on the Portofino Penninsula. One can hike to San Rocco,or the abbey of San Fruttuoso(15th century) and even Portofino from Camogli.
A car is not a necessity in Camogli as there are ferries and trains to Genova, Rapallo, San Fruttuoso, Portofino, Santa Margarita, Cinque Terre and more. There is a little tourist office (IAT) near Piazza Schiaffino, and they are happy to assist you with train tickets, schedules and any questions you might have. There are many wonderful restaurants in Camogli offering fresh fish, regional pasta dishes 'troffie al pesto', 'pansotti con salsa di noci' and more. Via Garabaldi, the street on the water is lined with gelato shops, focacceria shops where one can sample the famous 'focaccia col formagio', boutiques for shopping, fresh homemade pasta shops (if you wish to cook at home), wonderful cafe's and bars for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are a couple of great wine shops, and often you will find an English speaking person to help with your selection.
The apartment is on the fourth floor (above ground level) the building entrance is a few steps up from the beach level and a few steps down from the main street of the village. From there it's 43 steps up to the apartment.
Should you arrive at the Genova airport and need transportation to Camogli we are happy to make arrangements with Sergio (Camogli taxi driver) to meet you, gather your belongings and provide a scenic 30 minute drive to Camogli. Sergio will deliver you to the beautiful apartment where you will be greeted by your hostess Elaine who ensures an enjoyable transition from traveler to guest by an introduction to the picturesque village and the apartment with its many amenities. Our time in your apartment and Camogli was MAGICAL!!! We savored every moment and it was so hard to leave!
Your apartment offered everything imaginable. It was beautiful and so well appointed. The view was amazing! The beds were comfy. The kitchen was perfect. And we dined on Fiorella sister's pasta several times. We appreciate you allowing us to live there for two weeks!
The weather was glorious and we were outside all day, every day. We got to know many of the waiters at the outside restaurants as well as numerous shop owners, and they greeted us every time we passed by. We loved the church clock bells, the children playing, the smell of the bakeries, the street fairs, collecting sea glass, shopping, the wine, the food, the waves, and especially the people. Everyone was so nice to us! Elaine was very, very helpful and Sergio was awsome!
Sagra de Pesce was so much fun. We were sitting outside the Primula when the procession passed through town. We then enjoyed the bonfire and fireworks from the apt windows. SPECTACULAR!! And of course we joined the crowd for fish fresh from the pan!
We took a trip to Portofino which was so relaxing. Our intentions to go to Cinque Terra never materialized, because we were enjoying Camogli so much.
We have been to Italy before (Florence, Rome), but this trip far surpassed our last one. Thank you for everything. We hope to return someday!
I knew when we traveled to Italy for our very first time that I wanted to experience the Riviera as the locals do. This one of a kind property enabled us to do just that. My hubby, grown daughter and I were delighted to walk through the door to discover this unbelievable apartment and what was to become our home for a week and a trip of a lifetime. The description, photos and information cannot even begin to do this "home away from home" justice. We did the 5 Terre, Genoa, Portofino, San Fruttuoso, Santa Margherita, Rapallo and still had time to enjoy beautiful Camogli, its town and its beach. It is magical......standing at the windows looking out....what can I say? We visited the local markets, cooked out pasta and fresh veggies, drank wine, laughed and talked about all the special moments that day. The view and beautiful blue water and sunset cast its spell evening after evening and the chiming of the church bells was the icing on our delicious Camogliose dessert (rum filled cream puff.....the amaretto is wonderful too). Many thanks to Adele for opening your cozy, very clean home to us, warmest regards to Elaine who greeted us, arranged for us to have Sergio to take us to the airport, and who was absolutely a cache of information making our stay one we will never forget. P.S. The kitchen was wonderful; Adelle, you left no stone unturned when you decorated and furnished your apartment. Your attention to every detail truly makes this house a home!
we were so happy we made the decision to stay in this apt for our 9 days in this beautiful area :) we'd originally looked at booking a place in portofino, but after a lovely day visit there, we realized the views are much better and bigger in camogli....longer sun exposure too, along w/ great sunbathing and swimming just below (you can rent beach chairs/ umbrellas or there are public spaces for your towels scattered in a few spots along the rocky beach)....we also had looked on-line at apts in santa marg. but after enjoying a day there, we found camogli to be quieter/less touristy (santa marg. has a pretty busy rd bordering the beach all the way to portofino) ....to us first-timers here, camogli felt more down-to-earth and relaxing (who wants to pay $9 for a soda or $100+ for renting a set of beach chairs /umbrella in portifino?!? actually, we hadn't realized this, but there's no swimming or beach right in the town of portofino - here, it was nice to be just a minute's walk to our apt. the two days we just enjoyed being on the beach all day)....we found the local people in camogli to be very friendly, the pastries, focccia breads and forelli sisters fresh pasta amazing and the sunsets, full-moon and one stormy nite all breathtaking...another great thing is that the walkway below is pedestrian only, so except for the sounds of people enjoying themselves and some music til about midnite, you mostly just hear the soothing sound of the waves breaking and the nearby churchbell....also, the apt. is less then a 5 min walk down to the harbor to catch the ferry for visiting other towns (including the cinque terre ) and the bus and trains are about the same distance away....the apt itself was clean and comfortable with a great kitchen and 5 wonderful, big windows ~ yes, there are alot of steps (!), but it's manageable and kept us in good shape :) it was a bonus having a washer (hang to dry), the 2nd full bthrm and also the help and kindness of the very knowledgeable caretaker elaine - she was so patient w/ our questions and it helped us that she is from england (our italian was almost nil)...thank you for sharing your home with us and elaine, for your friendliness++... while we very much loved the rest of our trip afterwards to tuscany and lake como, my mom and i both hope most to return here to camogli again someday!
We've just returned from a fabulous stay in this lovely apartment. Hard-to-believe, but it was even better than the alluring photographs and descriptor.
The apartment is spacious and airy ---- it has nice high ceilings and an open kitchen to living area layout. The two full bathrooms are great as well. Having stayed in multiple apartments in Camogli, this is quite unique! It is well-appointed with towels, beach towels and a full set of kitchen dishware and utensils --- this made our arrival and experience totally carefree. The location is indeed perfect --- literally overlooking the principal passeggiata and we slept every night to the sounds of the sea. Last, the fact that is on the 3rd floor is great --- many other places are even higher up with steep flights. With two young children, this was a big plus. In sum, we could not have asked for a better stay with our two daughters, 6 and 3.
Our stay could not have been any better. The apartment was just as beautiful as the pictures featured and the location was perfect close to buses and train station. We loved opening the living room windows, hearing the church bells and the sound of the sea. We hope to return when the weather is warmer to fully enjoy the beaches. The apartment had all the necessary amenities. Be sure to visit the local wine shop - La Bottega dei Piaceri - great selection and the owner was very helpful. And definitely bring hiking shoes!!!!
We lived most of June ’15 in this charming (third floor) apartment located 20 meters from the beach on Via Garibaldi with majestic ocean views.
Its entrance is located midway in the block between ocean-front via Garibaldi and Camogli’s commercial district. All the services you need during your stay - a supermarket, many specialty stores, as well as the train station and post office are within 350 meters of your door. And on Wednesdays you walk out into a street market with wonderful produce (you can buy veggies that last all week) , specialty meats and cheeses and more cheap Chinese shoes, clothes and trinkets than you’d think all of Italy would ever need.
The apartment was designed as a permanent residence. The ocean exposure imbues the living area with light and space. It’s big, modern, cheerful, clean and has everything you need to be comfortable for an extended stay. The kitchen has a built-in dishwasher, microwave, four top range with oven and all the pots, dishes and utensils to cook a gourmet meal for 6. The master bedroom has a comfortable a queen bed and its own full bath with a washing machine.
And (maybe best of all, Italy being what it is) everything works. There’s decent WiFi, the hot water’s hot immediately every time you open the tap, and there’s not a slow drain in the place. There are enough outlets, decent lighting, comfortable couches, a well stocked bookcase and a sound system that can make stone vibrate (but be courteous to the neighbors – they might not want their stone to vibrate).
The town of Camogli is a charming, picturesque, working fishing village and historic center of Italian seafaring, still undiscovered by Rick Steves. It started at the harbor in the 1400s and has since spread around the bay and up the hill. Most of the visitors (and all of the inhabitants) are everyday Italians enjoying the seaside life. Hiking the hills, taking the Ferry to Porto Fino, surfing in Recco or just living la dolce vita catching some rays on the beach.
For dinner pick up some fresh pasta from the Fiorelli sisters (just a few doors north) then after dinner head for the terrace at Il Barcolo (a few hundred meters south) for the best Mohito in Italy (I’ve done the research) and watch the Italians strut their stuff as the sun sets.
Pretty soon you’ll be part Italian yourself.
Two years ago I called this apartment the Gold Standard. Nothing has changed. We cannot recommend this apartment enough.
Elaine incredibly helpful. Easy shopping, lovely swimming and hiking. Stairs are great exercise.
Camogli is indeed a gem. We hope to return.
