About Mary Winowiecki
We are both natives of Northern Michigan -- Joe growing up in Leelanau County and Mary in Traverse City. We moved away from the area for about 20 years after high school, but moved back "home" in 2000 to raise our two children, Emma and Mitch. (There's no where better to raise a family!). While the area has changed and grown in the past several decades, we love that it still retains what makes Northern Michigan so special -- pristine beaches, endless hiking and biking trails, and views that continue to take our breath away on a daily basis. We wouldn't live anywhere else!

Why Mary Winowiecki chose Traverse City
We were immediately impressed by West Winds Resort! First of all, it is situated on our favorite part of Lake Leelanau (the sunset side!). Secondly, the string of 11 cottages are so sweet! Each has shutters unique to their cottage and all are meticulously maintained, as is the entire property. We were struck by how quiet and private the resort felt -- the perfect spot to get away from it all!
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottages sit well off the road with a large grassy area complete with a great play structure and basketball hoop. There is also room to part boat trailers. The beach is great and adjoins a mini-marina (each cottage is allotted one slip). A gazebo and two fire pits add to the charm, as does a small fish-cleaning station.

Great location, beautiful view
This was a great spot! Awesome location on Leelanau peninsula, just a short drive to Traverse city. Beautiful view on a small private beach. Cottage was charming, clean and well maintained.
Cute little cottage!
We had a wonderful stay. The cottage was small, cute and clean and very close to the lake. It was great in the winter, and looks like it would be great in the summer too!
Nice private cottage.
Convienently located to the Brengman winery where the wedding reception we were attending was being held. In our haste to get to T.C. we forgot to bring linens and our own towels ! Our fault , however, having to bring these items to a vacation cottage is something we have Never had to do, and we won't book anywhere where we have to do this ! We did have to go out and buy these items new, which kind of irked me, but we now have a couple
ofnew, decent bath towels and some pretty crummy sheets ! The place was clean !
Idealic and quiet spot on a wonderful lake. Accommodations perfect for our fam of four.
Nice little beach and cottage close to it. Clean and cozy cottage with all the basics covered. Pretty big playground for the tots which was nice and place for them to ride bikes around. Great location to get to fun stuff. We rented a paddle board from Harbor House so that is great for cruising around the lake. Owners very responsive to a broken toilet seat cover. Communications with owner had quick responses overall.
Understand why folks come back year after year!
Our stay was amazing. Private beach, playground for kids, clean, adorable cottages. Perfect for a couple, family and multiple families. Everyone we met had been coming year after year for 20+ years. We had multiple families in a few cottages. So perfect to eat meals right on the lake and relax as all the cousins played and biked around. We rented kayaks at Sutton’s Bay Bike shop and they delivered right to the cottage. We had such a memorable time!
Great place for a vacation
Nice, we had a great time. Will go back
Ask any local and they'll tell you Lake Leelanau is one of their favorite inland lakes -- perfect for swimming, boating, paddle boarding and fishing. Visit nearby Grand Traverse Bay to take a catamaran ride, sail on a majestic Tall Ship, rent a jet ski or go parasailing. Or venture out onto The Big Lake (Lake Michigan) to go charter fishing or simply to meander along the shore keeping an eye out for Petoskey stones.
Take a drive out to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and don't miss the scenic Pierce Stocking Drive with outstanding views of Lake Michigan (scenic turnout #9 is amazing!). Hike, bike or snowshoe many of the park's trails (don't miss the new Heritage Trail!) or take the kids to the 110 foot Dune climb.
Did you know that Bon Appetit has named Traverse City one of the country's Top Foodie Towns? Eateries range from family friendly food trucks (check out The Little Fleet in downtown TC) and burger joints (Slab Town on West Front Street or Don's Drive-In on Munson) to eclectic cuisine like the Asian/Cuban fusion restaurant Georgina's. Celebrating a special day? Fine dining at PepeNero at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons is not to be missed. And local favorite Amical offers impeccable food, service and ambiance in downtown TC.
For the shoppers in the crowd, Downtown Traverse City boasts dozens of boutiques and specialty shops, and the nearby port towns of Suttons Bay, Leland, and Glen Arbor are ripe with shops, art galleries and eateries.
The summer season in our area is buzzing with festivals, ranging from the family-friendly National Cherry Festival to the highly acclaimed Traverse City Film Festival. Art festivals featuring the area's plethora of local artists can be found almost every weekend of the summer season, and wine and beer festivals are sprinkled throughout the year -- even in the winter months!
Golfers will enjoy some two dozen area courses, many with breathtaking views and designed by the likes of Palmer, Nicklaus, Weiskopf and Player. The Leelanau Club at Bahle Farms and Manitou Passage are two of the best -- and most beautiful -- in Northern Michigan.
We recommend checking out www.TraverseCity.com prior to your visit. It's a great resource for the latest in event information and area attractions!
