About Cherie M Cates

Retired from different areas. Cherie is from Macon, GA and moved here from Pensacola, FL in 2001. Gary is originally from Montana and moved here from Tallahassee, FL.

We, both, have a love and an appreciation of the mountains. It is our home. We welcome you to enjoy !

Cherie M Cates purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Cherie M Cates chose Smoky Mountains

The cabin is our second home in the mountains.

Its elevation is ~ 2100 ft and is located on the lower ridge line. It is ~ 1/2 mile from our home that is located at the bottom of the ridge line where the creek is located.

The cabin has a spectacular view of the Nantahala Mountains. Though the houses are relatively close, we maintain privacy for you and for us.

What makes this cabin unique

It is serenity at its best. The view from the porch is most calming to the body and to the soul. It allows your imagination to travel. Its remoteness and quietness offers rejuvenation.

A Wong retreat in the Smokies

  • 5 of 5

We are family of seven visiting the Smoky Mountains area during Holy Week 2017 for a spiritual retreat. Smoke Ridge Cabin is a perfect place for my family. Mr. and Mrs. Cates are the very kind and welcoming. They provided everything we needed during our stay. The kids (3-13) enjoying playing in the creek which was a short walk from the cabin. The cabin is clean and roomy for my family of seven! We enjoyed the Native American decoration, we even get to dance with the drums.

Appalachian Trial is about 30 minutes away, which we took a short 1.2 miles hike to the Wesser Fire Tower. The view was majestic! We also get to talk to interesting people from all over the States during the hike AT. We then drove along the Nantahala Gorge and went to Passion Friday Church Service in Franklin and concluded the outing waking under Dry Falls in Highland area.

Saturday we had a great time tubing and swimming at Smoky Mountain National Park, Deep Creek area. The water was a little chill, I almost got a cram in my legs when jumping into the river. We also visited Bryson city and bought a jar or Frog Jam which was very yummy for the bread! Saturday night we started a campfire roasting marshmallow and enjoy the starry night sky - Just a perfect way to start Easter Day!!

Owner's Response: The Wong Family are lovely people. They truely enjoy the outdoors. They are great renters who respected the cabin and its property. They were most gracious in every category. The cabin was left in very good condition- one would never know that 7 people stayed there especially 5 small children. Thank you so much for choosing our cabin for your stay in our mountains. Best stay ever.

  • 5 of 5

My family Visits WNC a couple times a year. We have stayed in many places looking for the right area we want to live in one day. This last trip was by far the best ever. Not only is the cabin wonderful but the Cates are some of the most friendly people and made us truly feel like we were at home with old friends. She invited the kids to come down to their house anytime to swim and play. Just talking over coffee was great. I had two 13 year old boys, my mom and my 87 year old grandma with me. The house was perfect. Most importantly it was easy for my grandma to get around. Only two small steps and the driveway is paved and level. I highly recommend staying with the Cates. It's the perfect location and will fit any type of family. We will not stay anywhere else and can't wait to go back.

The retreat we needed

  • 5 of 5

Honestly, the long reviews here are spot on. I loved it and so did my gf and daughter. Location was perfect for me as I grew up in Franklin but wanted to show my family everything the surrounding areas had to offer as well. I spent every day enjoying what the area has to offer and every night with a drink and a fire just watching the mountains I used to.

Motorcycle friendly

  • 5 of 5

My wife, kids, father in-law and I have stayed at this cabin 3 years in a row now and always enjoy the cabin. I love riding my motorcycles on the back mountain roads. I enjoy dirt and gravel roads. If you don't mind a bit of dirt and loose gravel then you will love this cabin. The first 250 or so yards of the shared drive off the beautifully paved road is at a very mild grade with some loose gravel and dirt. The rest of the drive is perfectly laid concrete up to the cabin. The only part that took a moment for me was going back down. The concrete drive has a fairly steep grade. The owners live at the bottom of the hill on the way to the cabin and are very friendly. They provided me with space to park my motorcycle trailer at their house. I bring a my 05 R1 and 05 Goldwing each year.

Awesome Mountain Adventure!

  • 5 of 5

Just perfect. I was hoping to accomplish several things this year while on vacation. I wanted some peaceful time to relax by myself in nature, away from the noise of the city. I wanted to explore the mountains and hike waterfall trails. I also wanted to spend time with my girlfriend and her family, which has become a rare occasion. I found the perfect place to accomplish all of these things.

If you want peace and quiet, you got it. If you want a base camp to explore the beauty of western North Carolina, you got it. There is so much to do in the area...waterfalls, hiking trails, tubing and kayaking, fishing...or if you're in the mood, just relax and don't do anything! Make sure to try the boiled peanuts though, you won't have a hard time finding them...

I really can't say enough about Gary and Cherie as hosts. They are more than accommodating and just really beautiful people. You can tell that they really love their cabin, it was masterfully built and is meticulously kept. The first few nights my girlfriend and I had the cabin to ourselves, later on in the week we had 3 other adults join us...there was no problem as far as space or comfort. I really wish we had a few more days to enjoy!

Thanks Gary and Cherie (and Katie)!!!
