About Cherie M Cates
Retired from different areas. Cherie is from Macon, GA and moved here from Pensacola, FL in 2001. Gary is originally from Montana and moved here from Tallahassee, FL. We, both, have a love and an appreciation of the mountains. It is our home. We welcome you to enjoy !
Cherie M Cates purchased this Cabin in 2001
Why Cherie M Cates chose Burningtown
The cabin is our second home in the mountains. Its elevation is ~ 2100 ft and is located on the lower ridge line. It is ~ 1/2 mile from our home that is located at the bottom of the ridge line where the creek is located. The cabin has a spectacular view of the Nantahala Mountains. Though the houses are relatively close, we maintain privacy for you and for us.
What makes this Cabin unique
It is serenity at its best. The view from the porch is most calming to the body and to the soul. It allows your imagination to travel. Its remoteness and quietness offers rejuvenation.

Charming mountain home.
Second time staying here. Great place for a getaway. Love the location halfway between Franklin and Bryson City. Quiet, clean, and reasonably priced.
Thank you so much for this feedback. It is always nice to know that others appreciate our area as much as we do.
Trout fishing weekend
We were here for a November weekend fishing trip and this place was ideal for us - extra clean with everything we needed for a great stay. Beautiful cabin with wood beam ceiling, great kitchen, and extra deck space. Hope to be back next year!
This property was beautiful! The house was immaculately maintained and very homey.
The house on top of the hill provided beautiful views and a sense of solitude. The house itself was beautiful with all the beams and woodwork. It was very clean and well stocked. Our boys loved the loft and the outdoor fire pit. The owners were great to work with and were just down the hill if we needed anything. The location is great. It wasn’t too far from Franklin and Bryson City. There was plenty to do on day outings or just kick back and relax at the cabin. We would definitely stay here again.
Absolutely beautiful cabin in the woods. Every detail was laid out by the owner. This cabin is for those who want to get away from it all. Wonderful place to relax and enjoy nature.
A Wong retreat in the Smokies
We are family of seven visiting the Smoky Mountains area during Holy Week 2017 for a spiritual retreat. Smoke Ridge Cabin is a perfect place for my family. Mr. and Mrs. Cates are the very kind and welcoming. They provided everything we needed during our stay. The kids (3-13) enjoying playing in the creek which was a short walk from the cabin. The cabin is clean and roomy for my family of seven! We enjoyed the Native American decoration, we even get to dance with the drums.
Appalachian Trial is about 30 minutes away, which we took a short 1.2 miles hike to the Wesser Fire Tower. The view was majestic! We also get to talk to interesting people from all over the States during the hike AT. We then drove along the Nantahala Gorge and went to Passion Friday Church Service in Franklin and concluded the outing waking under Dry Falls in Highland area.
Saturday we had a great time tubing and swimming at Smoky Mountain National Park, Deep Creek area. The water was a little chill, I almost got a cram in my legs when jumping into the river. We also visited Bryson city and bought a jar or Frog Jam which was very yummy for the bread! Saturday night we started a campfire roasting marshmallow and enjoy the starry night sky - Just a perfect way to start Easter Day!!
The Wong Family are lovely people. They truely enjoy the outdoors. They are great renters who respected the cabin and its property. They were most gracious in every category. The cabin was left in very good condition- one would never know that 7 people stayed there especially 5 small children. Thank you so much for choosing our cabin for your stay in our mountains. Cherie and Gary Cates
Just I want to say thanks so much for everything. We really have a great time in your cabin. My daughter love everything. Thanks for your big smile all the time. And of course I recommend this place.
This property is located in the western part of North Carolina - in the mountains. It is not near Salisbury, NC nor Charlotte, NC.
Burningtown Creek is located on the property, it is 1/2 mile from the cabin. The Little Tennessee River is ~ 2 miles from the cabin. Both are ideal for trout fishing and other water activities.
