Cozy seclusion in Northern Minnesota!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I needed to get away and I needed my "Minnesota Fix" as we call it. This cabin outside Walker, MN had the perfect combination of comfort with access to all things athletic. The dock is down a small flight of stairs and with Adirondack chairs, it's the perfect place for coffee in the morning and a glass of wine at night. There is a floating dock to swim to...the only downside is no sandy beach to ease into the water. We had some rainy days and it was fine to sit on the couch and read or do puzzles. The kitchen is more than adequate for cooking meals. The situation of this cabin to abundant black-topped trails is wonderful. One can hike forever through wooded areas or rent a bike nearby and bike...one of the trails is over 100 miles long. We were not fishermen, but if you love to fish and eat that fish...you're in the right place. Walker is a nice town with many restaurants to choose from and enjoy. Thank you Jonathan and Kate for your hospitality and for being in touch during our stay.

Fun in the Sun

  • 5 of 5

We had a week of fun, sun and great accommodations. This lake home had everything my family of five needed . We found most of our time was spent on the spacious dock and swimming in the lake. There are relaxing chairs where we all could sit around and watch the boats, loons and swimmers. We also caught perch, blue gill, rock bass and northern off the dock. The cabin upstairs and downstairs suited us great. We spent most of the cabin time in the screened deck. We ate in there, played cards and listened to the nice sound system. The kitchen had everything we needed, the appliances worked great, and the refrigerator is full-size. We also appreciated the nice TV, the abundance of movies and a fast internet. A lovely home surrounded by beautiful pine and birch trees. The double car garage was very handy to store the bike we brought for the Paul Bunyan trail along with our fishing and swimming gear. A lovely home to enjoy our vacation!

Location, Location, Location

  • 5 of 5

This property was the perfect location for our "Up North" getaway for a family of four (kids 11 and 13) . We even had space to accommodate a visit from grandma and grandpa for a couple of days.

The home itself had everything we needed. The kitchen is smaller but well-equipped. While we didn't cook big meals, we were able to bake and use the stovetop, sometimes with a little improvising, but we always got the job done. Highlights were the screened porch where we spent a great deal of time, and the basement which is more updated and stayed nice and cool.

We enjoyed the fire pit, the constant "visitors" to the bird feeders on the deck, as well as the flowers around the property. We even found fresh chives to put in our salad!

The real draw for this property, however is the location. Shingobee Bay is a great spot for swimming, boating, and presumably fishing (although we didn't fish on our trip). If you want a spot that is a little larger, you are moments by boat from Walker Bay and then on to other bays and the enormous Leech Lake. You can boat into Walker and dock to visit the cute shops and many dining options. Of course, you can drive, too, and it is just minutes to get there. This cabin sits on a very large secluded lot. The dock area (including floating dock) was perfect for swimming, tying up a float, or sitting in the deck chairs to read a book. The cabin is also very close to the Paul Bunyan bike trails.

The owners were very responsive and attentive during our stay. The next time we are headed "up north," their "Happy Place" will be ours again, too!

Shingobee Family Rwuniont

  • 5 of 5

This was our third time renting the cabin. We love Shingobee Bay, having spent a lot of family time there since the 1960s. The lake is beautiful. The bike trails are the best anywhere, right outside your door.

The cabin is extremely comfortable with a fire pit in the yard overlooking the lake. We made good use of the basement TV room for movies at night. Kitchen is fully equipped. Dock and swim platform are great for warm summer days.

Thank you so much.

It's that ideal place for family memories

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this cabin last summer also, and booked a second summer. We have been here in June both times. Growing up in MN, it's that ideal up north cabin for making memories with family. It has a nice longer driveway with the cabin tucked right into the woods of big pine and beautiful birch trees. The driveway is nice for smaller kids to go up and down on their bikes, and scooters and still have enough room for parking. There is a nice front and back yard for for dogs and kids to run around too. When you walk into the cabin there is a great porch for hanging out on summer nights, with a radio and a ceiling fan. Appliances work great. There is a lot of books, games and puzzles. My boys are 12 and twin boys that are 9 and they always end up playing out on the dock, jumping in the water and swimming. The water was about 77 degrees, warm enough for them! There is some steps to get down to the dock, but it's great exercise for my boys going up and down to the cabin. The dock is great to hang out and fish and watch the sun go down. You can catch some great size northern and walleye right off the dock! The bay is perfect for pulling kids on the boat tubing. If you have a boat there is a public landing very close, and then just drive your boat over to the cabin. The basement is another area we end up hanging out, really great for a rainy day to watch a movie, play games, etc. the basement is a walkout, which is really great for running in and out when you need something. There is air conditioning that works great for hot days, but the nights cool to 50-60 degrees and the lake winds are a great way to cool the cabin at night too.

If you wait to buy food, there is great little grocery store in walker! Walker is a fun town to walk around and check out the candy shops, ice cream and there is pizza place that has some great pizza! There is a pharmacy to. There is also a great park with a playground in walker, it also has a basketball court that my boys like.

The beds and linens are comfy and clean, the main bedroom upstairs has a big patio door that leads out to the deck, you look right into the woods when you lay in bed. You can have a cup of coffee on the deck, or have a family dinner. You can see the lake from the cabin through the trees.

We love that there is a washer and dryer, makes it so much easier with kids and not having to pack so much, because you can just wash and dry at the cabin.

Just a fun all around great family place to stay to get away!

Great Stay! We'll be back!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 4 (and dog) arrived on Saturday and were thrilled with the location. It's just far enough from Walker to feel like you are in the "wilderness". The cabin was clean and had all the amenities of home. The owners have taken care to make sure you have what you need, from linens to games to the basics in the cabinets to cook a nice meal. And a great meal indeed was had, we caught 4 nice Walleye on the lake to pan fry in the cast-iron skillet! There is a trash compactor in the garage which came in handy. It was great to go for nice long walks and spot wildlife as the cabin is off a heavily forested road. We enjoyed the eagle pair that flew by the windows each morning, the loons who visited a few feet from the dock, the porcupine and deer who meandered through in the evenings and of course all the little birds who fed at the feeders. We enjoyed the Lucky Moose and Charlies, and downtown Walker is a few miles away and has a good sized grocery store and several cute shops. Reeds was the place to go for all your fishing gear and licenses. The only issue that I can say we had was with the key that was left not working, but we were able to use the garage door opener to get in and out easily. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip and will be back!
