About David Cerney

Born in Oak Park, IL... raised in LaGrange Park and Naperville. Moved to Naperville in 1961 when the town was just a sleepy farming community... with family in the Michigan City, IN area going back to the late 1800s. Our family has been coming to SW Michigan since the early 1900's. I spent most of my (summer) childhood years on the beach in Stevensville, where my grand parents had a home on Lake Michigan. That's when I fell in love with the area and I've been coming back ever since.

David Cerney purchased this house in 1988

Why David Cerney chose Michigan

Familiarity and proximity to Paw Paw lake and Lake Michigan... and the love of the area! Love the laid back atmosphere, lack of traffic and abundant of outdoor activities the area provides!

Paw Paw Lake is great for water skiing and spending a leisurely day on the water. Lake Michigan is close... with several beach access parks nearby. The harbors, shops, restaurants and beaches of St. Joe, South Haven and Saugatuck can't be beat and have some of the best fresh water beaches in the world! Check out my favorite restaurants... Schu's, The Buck and Clementine's Too in St Joe, and Clementine's in South Haven and The Friendly in downtown Coloma!

What makes this house unique

Antique shopping... sampling the various restaurants... boating the lakes... vineyards, winery's and orchards... scenic traffic free country roads, and the Dunes are fantastic! Charming St. Joseph and South Haven, both 15 minutes away. All less than than two hours from Chicago...St Joseph, South Haven, Saugatuck/Douglas have some of the finest fresh water beaches in the world!

Fine restaurants in all these towns... Fishing Charters, Championship Golf at Hawkshead (South Haven), Harbor Shores (St. Joe), Paw Paw Lake Golf Course (Watervliet). Silver Beach Carousel and the Whirlpool Compass Fountain/Splash Pad for the kids in St. Joseph. Various local Vineyards and MUCH, MUCH more! Visit the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven and sail aboard the Schooner "Friends Good Will" ... available for sightseeing and charters.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lovely house made for a wonderful wedding and family reunion. If you could warm up the water in Lake Michigan that would be great for our next visit.

average rating of 4.4666667 based on 48 reviews

Nice comfortable home in a good location.

  • 5 of 5

The home was clean and neat and stocked with what we needed. I rented this home for our family of 6 to be close to our nephew's wedding venue. It provided the space we needed and we were very comfortable. I really wanted a home with 2 bathrooms and they were both very up to date.

Unfortunately, the weather didn't allow us to enjoy the property and yard.

It was well located near St. Joseph and the rental homes of the rest of the family.

The owner was very prompt with all communications. He gave very good and clear instructions about the home.

We really enjoyed the area and hope to get back.

Nice house, but come prepared

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay on Paw Paw Lake and found the house clean and comfortable. A few words to help future guests, though... the house is only minimally stocked with the things I would expect at a VRBO. We often stay in VRBOs because of the convenience of being able to make our own food and have additional space to spread out in. We are willing to pay more to know that the basic things we need to do so will be available to us. This home was the least well stocked of any we have stayed at, which was disappointing for the price we paid. There were only very minimal cooking supplies in the kitchen - nothing like a cookie sheet, no mixing bowls, no measuring cups, etc. There were virtually none of the basic cooking supplies we often find, like salt and pepper, oil, saran wrap, etc.The owner recommends you not drink the well water, but does not supply a Brita pitcher or anything like it. (There were many plastic jugs filled with water, but these were unlabled, so we were not sure if they were safe for drinking, nor how long they had been in the cupboard.) There were very limited towels (2!) in the kitchen, almost no dish soap, no dustpan, and only a few rolls of TP. These are basic items I think most people would expect to be provided for the duration of their stay... Overall, the house was a fine place to stay, but really didn't meet our expectations for a typical VRBO experience. If you decide to stay here, plan to come very well prepared.

Owner's Response: First let me thank you for taking the time to write a review! While I don't consider this review to be negative, I do feel that I need to address some of your concerns. First, we do agree, that the home is clean, comfortable and a fine place to stay. Thank You for that compliment! However, I'd like to note the following. I suppose "cooking supplies" and "well stocked" is a matter of interpretation, but most of the items you indicate weren't provided, were actually there, i.e. two cookie sheets, two of sets measuring spoons, (hanging on the right side of the upper cabinets over the sink), a two cup glass Pyrex measuring cup under the sink (turns out the set of plastic measuring cups were missing... to be replaced). A set of Stainless Steel salt and pepper shakers on the dining room table, a large mixing bowl (lower cabinet under the sink), one full bottle and one partial bottle of dish soap (under the sink), a dust pan and floor duster located in the breezeway, and a broom and mop in the kitchen. The kitchen is small but reasonably amended with most the items a family of 6 to 8 would need for their cooking needs for a short term vacation. Bathrooms have two extra rolls of TP each. I provide 6 sets of towels in the bathrooms, including (2) kitchen towels, plus two small hand towels and some small dust/cleaning towels in the laundry room, and a new roll of paper towels in the kitchen. I don't supply "unlimited" disposables such as this... and yes you are correct, I don't supply cooking oils, or any perishable food items, saran wrap, aluminum foil or similar items (however, these items are often left by previous guests for you to use). I was also clear in my rental agreement and my cover letter prior to your arrival, what is provided and what is not. I also suggest to guests what items they should... and might, want to bring. I was there an hour after your departure, and most of the aforementioned items were there. To address your water concerns... I do indicate the purpose of the water containers, on the "Welcome to Our Home" address (on the dining room table), and I do address the well water taste. They are there for primarily for cooking purposes (if so desired). The home is located in a rural area where all the homes have wells. The water is perfectly safe, it's just not bottled water and it's just a matter of taste. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay, and I hope I addressed your concerns. Thanks again for taking the time to write this review!

Relaxing Vacation

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful, well-maintained yard surrounds this charming cottage across from Paw Paw Lake and we enjoyed the variety of birds and pond life. We found the house exceptionally clean, with everything you could want for a relaxing stay. In 20 minutes you can be in either South Haven or St. Joseph for shopping or ice cream, or at one of the several beaches on Lake Michigan. An altogether delightful place to just relax!

Great home for family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six adults stayed for a long weekend in this clean, comfortable home. We had no issues with the home. It was as described on the site and the photos are very accurate. We took long walks along Paw Paw Lake Road which had some traffic but nothing too concerning. There is a bike lane on either side so we felt quite safe. We visited the small beach on the Watervliet side which is nice but I highly recommend taking David's advice and go to the South Haven beach. It is beautiful and was not crowded when we went. The living room is large and certainly had enough seating for all six of us. The bunk beds in the 3rd bedroom worked out great, even though two adults used them. They said the beds were quite comfortable. The master bedroom is spacious and the bed is very comfortable. The home is very clean and in excellent condition. We enjoyed the deck and the peaceful sounds of the evening. We would not hesitate to stay in this lovely home on our next trip to this area.

Everything we could want in a vacation rental

  • 5 of 5

Our family (4 adults and 3 kids) stayed here for a full week during the summer and really enjoyed ourselves. The description on VRBO is quite accurate. The house is large and airy and in excellent condition. The master bedroom was delightful with high ceilings and a private deck. The master bathroom is worth the price of admission all by itself. It has a huge shower with a bench and two shower heads. There is also a jacuzzi tub!

The living room is large with two sofas (with built-in recliners) and a third stand-alone recliner. It has a new large TV with an internet connection (netflix) and wifi. The furnishings are very comfortable. The air conditioning made Lake Paw Paw especially pleasant in the summer heat.

We slept four adults and three children here very comfortably and would gladly stay again. It is also within walking distance of two restaurants and a convenience store. The house faces Paw Paw Lake Road but the noise was pretty minimal especially at night.

The owner, David, was very responsive to our inquiry for renting his house. He was quick to reply and it was a pleasure working with him.

The only negative item to be aware if you aren't used to the area, is the Michigan plumbing. Well water in the area can smell a bit "sulfur-y". This was only an issue at the beginning of our stay and only the super-sensitive nose of our teen noticed it after day 2. The plumbing for the toilets is also a bit "tempermental" and you should be prepared to have a clear and complete discussion (as out lined in the house) with any young children or teens. We did not have a plumbing problem, but I could see that happening very easily.

In short, it was all we could ask for.

Owner's Response: Thanks for all the positive comments! I try to do my best to make everyone's guest experience the best it can be! Yes, the home is in the country and does not have city water. The soil in the area has a high iron content which doesn't make for the best tasting water. I do recommend bottled water for drinking. The home does have a water softener... and showers and laundry are not affected. When the home is not used for a week or so... which was the case before your arrival, the water will pick up sulfur smell from the water heater. Once the water is used from the heater the smell disappears. This is common with all homes that have well water in this area. Thanks again for the review and you are welcome back anytime!

A Great Place to Rent....with a couple tweaks!

  • 4 of 5

We arrived on a Friday afternoon (side note...Stay far away from Chicago traffic on a Friday afternoon) to a well maintained although not clearly marked house on a beautiful lot...Gorgeous piece of property! House is well maintained, very clean and a great central location for quick trips to Saugatuck,South Haven ,St Joseph, Grand Rapids etc.

However we feel there could be some additonal common amenities in the house...some of the guest towels had holes in them, there was not something as simple as salt and pepper in the house (which disappointed me after we bought farm fresh eggs to enjoy for breakfast), the microwave could be upagrade, it would have been niceer if there were matching plates, cups etc, the back door off the bedroom was at times difficult to lock...

Don't take this too much to heart, beleive me we didnt suffer while we were there, we just think things could be a bit updated and improved on...Southwestern Michigan is truly a beautiful place to visit

Owner's Response: Most people don't take the time to write a review... so when someone does, I try to address any concerns they may have about their stay at my home. First...THANK YOU for your nice comments about the house and property! I do appreciate that! Past reviews have been overwhelmingly positive! And while most folks don't post written reviews on this site... they do often call me, write notes in my guest book or email me... with positive comments. Yes, the traffic through Indiana can be brutal... especially with construction on 80/94 and with a lot of folks heading to SW Lower Michigan for the weekend. I was there this past weekend and personally inspected the entire home. All the comforters, bed linens, bath/face towels etc. are in very good shape, no holes or ragged edges. With that said, the both bath mats (Jacuzzi and shower) in the Master Both are a bit ragged and one does have some holes... Both are still functional, but will be replaced asap. Salt and Pepper... I used to supply quality salt and pepper shakers... but those types of items tended to disappear... so I stopped offering them. I will however, reconsider that... perhaps something more disposable. The Microwave is small, modern and in very good shape... While you cannot cook large items in it... it seems to be more than adequate for warming and cooking relatively small items and will accommodate a full size dinner plate. Matching cups and dinner plates... The left kitchen cabinet has a variety of plates/cookware etc. and they do not match... The right cabinet used to have a service set of 8, matching plates/cups/wine glasses etc. However, over the past few seasons... a few have disappeared (assume broken, especially coffee cups)... so that set is no longer complete. I will address that issue. Lastly, the back door does need adjustment. It does lock properly, but does sometimes require a bit of "fanagling" ... I will fix that shortly and probably replace that mechanism as well. And yes... SW Lower Michigan is a very beautiful place!!!! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay!! Hope I addressed your concerns... and thanks again for the suggestions! David

PLEASE NOTE: This home is recommended for a maximum of 6 occupants. Exceptions are possible, but the owner must approve any additional occupants over and above 6 adults. If approved a $75 fee will be imposed on each occupant, per night... over the 6 maximum allowed.

The two main bedrooms have Queen Beds in each room, to sleep a total of 4 adults. The third bedroom is smaller with a Bunk Bed and a pull out Trundle. While the Bunk Bed is sturdy enough to sleep 2 moderately sized adults, IT IS NOT normally recommended for 2 full sized adults. The bunks are recommended for children, teenagers, or young adults... primarily for comfort reasons. Because of the limited size of that bedroom, it is highly recommended that only young adults or children should sleep in the bunks... it would be a tight fit for more in that room with the trundle pulled out.

A standard Rental Agreement is required to rent this home. Any questions about this, contact the owner.
If additional occupants are approved (over 6 adults) there will be an additional charge of $75.00 per day, per person (no exceptions).
