Bordering the National Forest in sunny West Vail, Alpine View is a three bedroom, three and a half bath European-style home, custom built in 1980 with Old World craftsmanship.

The great room welcomes you with a cathedral ceiling and large expanses of glass for viewing the spectacular scenery. Enjoy the comfortable seating around the gas fireplace for reading, napping, listening to beautiful music on the Sony stereo system, or watching DVDs or movies on the HDTV.

Off the great room is a cozy octagonal room with glass walls and ceiling that offers fantastic views of the Gore Range and the south side of the Vail Valley. It's perfect for dining or playing cards. Sliding doors open to extensive outdoor spaces that include a patio with a gas grill and a turret/gazebo, along with a fire pit that seats eight to ten people. These places are ideal for sipping a favorite beverage and enjoying the dramatic views that surround this idyllic site.

The home has a dining room that seats six, the octagonal room that seats six, and a breakfast bar that seats three. A wet bar is well-placed for entertaining, in between the breakfast bar and the game room. The game room offers a place for indoor exercise and a professional ping pong table, along with comfortable seating so people can gather to watch the game.

The fully equipped kitchen includes both gas and electric stoves, oven, microwave and dishwasher.

WI-FI is available throughout the home, and no password is needed.

Downstairs in a private office are a computer with broadband service, FAX, scanner and printer. Next to the office is the laundry room with a large washer and dryer.

The master bedroom offers a king size bed, a gas fireplace, TV and a large en-suite bath that also includes an indoor hot tub to enjoy after a long day of skiing or hiking. On the same level is a second bedroom with a queen bed and TV that opens onto a sunroom with a sauna. The bath has a tub/shower combination.

A third floor suite includes a third bedroom with a queen bed and TV, and a bath with a tub/shower combination. The bedroom opens onto a very private deck overlooking the large meadow that is part of the National Forest. Relaxing in the afternoon sun is a special treat. On the same level is a loft sitting room with a queen sleep sofa and a cubby with a king size mattress where older children love to sleep.

The attached garage has room for one car, and a second car can be parked behind it and will be mostly sheltered from snow. This fabulous mountain escape is three full blocks to the bus stop on Chamonix Lane. The hike back up the hill from the bus stop can be difficult for people who have been living at sea level, however, especially in winter.

Our home is perfect for adults and older children who will be understand how to use the indoor hot tub, climb a spiral staircase, and use the third floor sitting room with its view to the great room below.

About The Owner

Neil is a retired space scientist, with special expertise in satellites. He is currently enrolled in a doctoral program in transpersonal psychology. Fonya is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice, offering therapy in person and also by telephone, Skype, or FaceTime. Our permanent home is in Virginia Beach, VA. We enjoy skiing on warm sunny days in winter and spring. In the summer, we play golf and enjoy long evenings outside dining on the patio. We also have found wonderful restaurants in Vail and the surrounding area in all price ranges.

Why The Owner chose Vail

We have been coming to the Vail Valley for more than thirty years and finally have been able to buy our own home in the mountains. We chose a house with an original design, constructed over time by a European craftsman, who began building it in the 1980's; and we were captivated by the charming, interesting, and fanciful spaces. The use of skylights and large windows creates light throughout the house, making it very welcoming and offering many beautiful views. Gas fireplaces in the master bedroom and the great room make it cozy and add extra warmth in the winter.

What makes this house unique

The views of the surrounding mountains are very special and create a sense of inner peace. In the summer, the outdoor spaces on the patio with the turret/gazebo make outdoor living and dining a pleasure. Even on hot days, the evenings in the mountains are cool. In winter, the house has light and is warmed by the sun during the day. While we are high up on the hill with beautiful views, we also are only minutes away from fine restaurants, movies, the Colorado Ski Museum, ski lifts and golf courses.

"Fonya was wonderful to work with in booking our vacation! The house is AMAZING...great views that you cannot appreciate from the photos and the location is incredible. We walked to the Vail shuttle every night, didn't have to pay to park in the village and got to know some of the local secrets from those rides and our conversations with locals. She has a great list of recommendations as well. There is a lot of space, a great kitchen to cook in~just a great place owned by such a nice couple! "

Lovely views, with a few surprises

We had a lovely time in this quirky home. Marc, the caretaker, and Fonya, the owner, are lovely people who were very helpful during our stay. The views were lovely. There were a few things we would have liked to know before we got there which would have made our stay easier. The driveway is VERY steep and difficult to clear when it snows. Without 4 wheel / all wheel drive and good tires, you can't get up.

The house you see in the photo is actually a multi-family dwelling. The apartment described here is good-sized, with many rooms that run next to each other. We had to go through one bedroom to get to another because one of the rooms (the game room) was closed downstairs. There are electric heaters in the back for this bath and bedroom that have to run all the time if you are there in the winter.

There is a nice bedroom with attached bath upstairs. Outside the door in the loft are a sleeper sofa and a cubby with a king mattress in it. The spiral stairway to get to the loft and bedroom would be challenging and potentially hazardous for young children.

Be sure you get a tour of the electrical switches from Marc when you check in. They are not intuitively placed and we never did figure out how to get the overhead lights on for the living room. Bring a hairdryer -- we eventually found two. The kitchen is not really well-equipped compared to some, but it does have two cook tops -- one gas and one electric, which was nice. The dining area is smallish, and the other table is on the other side of the living room, so a large group cannot easily eat together. The table expands (ask Marc how) and we did manage to cram 10 around it, but it was very tight.

The living area was a terrific place to gather and was perfect for our multi-generational family gathering. We loved the gas fireplace! We used the smaller table in the octagonal room for a craft and game area and it worked beautifully. The floor to this room is heated (ask Marc).

Everything was very clean and there is a great washer and dryer in the lowest level.

Girls trip

We picked the best time of year to go to Vail.The house offered us a beautiful view of the changing of the trees from the patio.All of us girls enjoyed the house.We had our own space and the house was clean and well equipped for all our needs.Marc the caretaker was very nice and helpful.We,really enjoyed our stay at this property.Would recommend this property.

Clean, friendly, plenty of space, well stocked

We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Vail Colorado, using this property we were close by without being in the kaos of thing. Marc, the caretaker was friendly, helpful, and invisible! This property was clean, well stocked with the necessities, and great view. WE ALL LOVED IT, everything it says it is.

You will love the location!

West Vail is a great part of the Vail Valley. It receives lots of sunlight, and is a wonderful place to be located to take part of all that Vail has to offer.

If you have looked at the pictures of this home, you will know it has a unique layout. This is its greatest asset, in that it has a wide range of nooks and crannies, with a bohemian flare. Relax in the Grecian inspired loggia before you take a sauna, or dip into the jacuzzi. Play some ping-pong after dinner!

There are some terrific views of the mountains from the sunlit cupola room, a favorite of ours to enjoy our morning coffee and watch the sun rise to the east. These same mountains radiate with the evening 'alpine glow', something not to be missed! There are two gas-lit fireplaces that add extra warmth to those cold winter nights.

Rent this property for its unique character and great location (grocery stores and restaurants at bottom of hill). Do not have more than the allotted two cars, you will get a ticket if you park in the street, even for a brief period of time. If you are skiers, we park for free at the Bear lot in Beaver Creek and take their free bus to the lift.

Fantastic spot

The house was great. Felt private and the amenities were as promised. If our travels take us to Vail again, this house will be a top choice for the stay. Can't wait to see the completion of the touch ups that are in progress (these did not take away from our enjoyment). Everything was cozy and romantic, but could easily see the house be able to accommodate a family vacation as well.

Unique Property!

Neil and Fonya's home is such a unique find -- it's huge, with unexpected rooms that just keep going and going. The layout is unlike any place I've seen before, but allows for everyone to easily interact. The outdoor space is lovely and, since the house sits high in the Vail hills, it has a very nice view of the Valley. Fonya was very responsive and easy to communicate with and gave specific directions and even restaurant suggestions with our reservation. Marc, the property manager, lives in an apartment around the back of the house and is very responsive if anything at all is needed.

This is stated in the rental agreement and won't be a problem for most renting this home, but note that parking can be tricky. Two cars can easily fit in the driveway, three if you are able to block a car in. This being Vail, street parking or even overnight lots are very hard (impossible?) to come by, so try not to bring too many cars (we were here for a girls' weekend, and of course everyone found a reason to drive separately).
