When you arrive at our charming Casa de la Luna Sonriente you will first notice the nice entry way with a unique front door which allows the top windows to swing open to catch the breeze allowing you to immerse yourself in the romance of this intriguing town. To the sides of the entry way you have the living room and dining/kitchen areas both with rustic exposed beam ceilings and either wrought iron chandeliers or Mexican style metal lighting fixtures.

The living room has a red plush, sink in and relax, sofa and loveseat. Other seating includes a lovely Mexican style carved bench covered with a plump cushion and decorative pillows. Going up the spiral staircase to the second floor you will find a small den area between the two bedrooms. A nice window with a small balcony gives the room character and more light. Curl up in the leather Equipale sofa to read a book. On one side is the Master bedroom with a queen bed, with memory foam topper, looking up to a boveda ceiling with a ceiling fan. The room also includes another window with a small balcony and a gas fireplace. There is a color cable TV and a DVD player. Adjoining the Master bedroom is a small walk in closet that leads to the vivid blue tiled bathroom with skylights. This bathroom has a comfortable tub and shower with a window to access the breezeway. On the other side is the other bedroom, also with a boveda ceiling and ceiling fan. There is a small TV with cable provided. There are two twins beds - also with memory foam toppers - (that could be pushed together to make a queen) and a smaller full bath with a shower only.

Up the stairwell to the top floor and you will see why this house is the Gem of Guadalupe. Enjoy the covered patio with views of the Parroquia and San Miguel in all of its glory. There is a small refrigerator/freezer provided to chill your wine and drinks. Also a propane tank gas grill can be used to prepare a nice rooftop dinner. Relax and watch the sun set over the mountains with the churches and town lights twinkling below.

The entire house has beautifully tiled counter tops and floors. The exterior and patio have been recently repainted. All bedding, towels, kitchen utensils, pots and pans are provided. Twice a week maid service is also provided. On the top floor just around the corner are the covered washer and dryer for your laundry needs. A few of the photos do not show the new furniture or updates - please contact us for more information.

The location is in Guadalupe; a flat 12-15 minute walk to the Centro. Also 5 minutes to the artisans walk and 6-7 minutes to the Fabrica Aurora There is a tienda on the next block for any late night munchies or needed supplies. We do not usually write reviews, but are so disappointed in Casa de la Luna Sonriente, we felt we had to let people know what we experienced on our recent visit.

We have been to San Miguel prior to this visit three times before and are quite familiar with it. We have stayed a month at a time and enjoyed all there is to do and see. We told the owner we were looking for a place to just rest and relax this time. We are in our mid 70's and wanted to be able to spend time in a house that was quiet in order to read, relax, cook, etc.

After talking to her, we decided to rent her place for two weeks. Unfortunately, we were very much misled. She failed to share with us that there are two very large dogs directly across the street that live on the rooftop terrace, and they bark constantly throughout the day and night. The living room and master bedroom are directly across the street from them. We also discovered the street is not quiet at all Needless to say, the vacation we had been looking forward to was cut short from 14 days to 6. After several emails with the owner, we did receive a partial refund.

So, if you love the sound of barking dogs day and night, noisy traffic and pigeons living on the rooftop terrace, this is the place for you!

Owner's Response: It is very difficult to respond to problems, if you do not know about them. I literally heard about the complaints as they were leaving SMA. Had I known I might have been able to make some suggestions or at the very worst help them find another place to stay with my friends that also rent. I do know my property manager did his best to solve all their complaints. He went to the Ecology dept. twice reporting the dogs. I do remember talking to the male renter before their visit but we talked more about the Mexican culture and travel in general. I did not mislead them - the contract states that I am not responsible for any noises in Mexico as I cannot control them, not to mention they are ever changing. I also suggest , in the contract, that renters bring ear plugs just in case. As for the pigeons, we do have some pigeons but the maid comes twice a week to clean/control. In fact I told him "If he had the perfect solution, other than shooting them, to let me know as I have tried them all." After they left (8 days early), I did receive emails asking for a refund and each time I responded with a time frame I would get back to them as I was traveling with work. I must say every email was accusatory in nature which made it even harder for me to work with them. In fact near the end, I told him " Please quit being so aggressive with me, painting me as some type of fraud." My contract states, I will not refund unless I am able to book the time period for the same amount. My next renter was able to come earlier but not the entire 8 days. I not only refunded them what she paid for the four days but even gave them $50 more. At this point I thought we were finished but obviously they want to persecute me and my business further with submitting a bad review. Bottom line is they made the decision to leave early which meant more flight costs etc. I get the feeling that they might have needed to get back early for something and did not disclose this information to me. Also if they were really familiar with San Miguel they would be familiar with the noises (fireworks, dogs, church bells, loud trucks/buses etc.) and know that Mexico is not the United States with noise restrictions. etc. I continue to provide a nice place at a very reasonable price and will work with anyone to solve problems. In fact I just had a renter who signed a contract for the wrong year (the dates she provided me) and I helped her find another place at the last minute and refunded her money.

A jewel in San Miguel

  • 5 of 5

We really loved our this home in the Guadalupe area of San Miguel. In 15 or 20 minutes you can be directly in the middle of the historic part of town. The house is very roomy, the house cleaner very good. All the appliances worked and we loved having access to filtered water. The master bedroom is lovely with fan and artistic brick work on the room. If your a late sleeper, you might want to use the guest bedroom as school children and their families head to school around 7:30am. Neighborhood is quiet and safe. Someday we would love to return.

Fantastic home!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here for one month in January. I loved the home and the location. It was such a flat walk to Centro. The home has all the amenities one could need. Elena, the maid, came in twice a week to clean and kept the place spotless. I really appreciate that there is some purified water and that there is no need for the large water jugs. I was glad that the hot water was immediate and easy to regulate, as there is a hot water heater. I was glad that there were several English language TV channels, including regular NBC. ABC, etc. so I could keep up with my shows while home in the evenings. The tienda across from the corner had all the basics that I needed but Gil's is very close (just google it) with even more selections.

The roof top patio was very nice and has a great view. The log fireplace in the dining room took off the morning chill as I ate breakfast each morning. The road in front of the house is intact, but construction continues on the rest of the road and makes it a bit confusing to reach the house. Hopefully, this road construction will be done before too long. All in all, it is a great location and I would rent it again with no hesitation.

The house was just as described. It's in a very convenient neighborhood. Right on the corner what's a small Tienda what you could get supplies. In case you're into cooking the kitchen was well-stocked with pots, utensils, etc. The owner was a delight to work with. The keypad entry on front door was very convenient as no one had to meet us upon arrival. There were two downfalls which I believe are out of control of the owner. One was the street was torn up for several blocks which made it hard to find to the property and get to it. The second downfall was the two large dogs One being a Great Dane the other a German Shepherd on the roof of the house across the street and they bark constantly.

About Lisa Widner

I love to travel and am about to have 40 countries on my list. I love sports - especially college football 'Go Hogs Go' - and dancing.

Lisa Widner purchased this house in 2007

Why Lisa Widner chose Colonia Guadalupe

I arrived in San Miguel the first time by accident. I was supposed to fly into Chihuahua and missed my flight. Luckily they allowed me to choose another flight so I flew into San Luis Potosi and rented a car. I spent time in San Miguel and Guanajuato. Being that it was August and I live in Houston, I immediately fell in love with the weather. I was entranced by the beauty, architecture and vivid colors. I continue to enjoy the varied restaurants, entertainment, culture, and never ending parades that typically end with fireworks. More importantly I easily slip into the calm and tranquil lifestyle once in San Miguel. I appreciate the graciousness of the Mexican people and hope in some small way I can resemble them. I plan to spend more time and enjoy this area once I retire.

Stay: Jan – March, 2010

We stayed at Casa Luna Sonriente (smiling moon) January, February and March of 2010. It is situated in the barrio of Guadaloupe north of el Jardin (the center). As advertised, it is a flat walk of 10 to 15 minutes to the center which may be relevant to non mountain climbers as San Miguel is located on the side of a mountain declining from east to west. For those unfamiliar with San Miguel be advised that restaurants abound and there are many a mere 10 minutes walk south. In the immediate neighbourhood try Gombos a pizza delivery joint which also has a small dining area with a limited but excellent Italian menu. One of our favourites was Vivoli on Hernandez Macias opposite Bellas Artes. Say hola to Rita for us. There are at least three tiendas within a couple of minutes for access to those valencia oranges to squeeze for breakfast. Or if you prefer someone else to do your squeezing try Buenos Dias on Relox just north of the biblioteca (library). We found the casa to be very comfortable and well taken care of by Elena who thoroughly cleans every Monday and Friday. It is typically Mexican with boveda ceilings in both bedrooms and a center hall plan with the living room separated from the dining room and kitchen. It has all the amenities including TV’s in both bedrooms and living room. The portable Ipod station with speakers can be transported to the roof deck to provide music while you sip your margarita or cerveca while absorbing the view of sunsets or the lighted domes and steeples of chuches and cathedrals. You may reach into the fridge on the roof to replenish your beverage without having to move too far. This was our third trip to San Miguel and it didn’t disappoint. The local folks, the cultural events, the restaurants and the seemingly endless festivals and celebrations make this a special place.
