About Connie Hartke

Connie & Paul Hartke own several vacation rental properties. Connie manages our two cabins in the Smoky Mountains and runs our online real estate school. Paul co-owns a very busy real estate company in Northern Virginia and is our school instructor. We live work and play in Reston, VA, but always have "one foot" in the Smokies.

Connie Hartke purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Connie Hartke chose East

The Views. Come see and you will understand.

This cabin has a small flat yard with swingset so it is great for small children and dogs of all sizes. Older kids will welcome the freedom to "roam and explore."

We fell in love with the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and bought our first cabin, Eagles View, in 2005. Above the Clouds was purchased in 2006. We love the friendly people in the area and hiking in the park. Both cabins were destroyed in a fire in March 2007, so we rebuilt and were renting again by Thanksgiving.

We visit several times a year to hike to a new waterfall and keep our cabins in A+ shape.

What makes this cabin unique

'Above the Clouds' has a unique central beam with wildlife carvings by a local artist. The cabin is truly wheelchair accessible, including the lower level game room!

Located 1/2 hour or less from Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge (10 miles), Sevierville and Townsend. Less than a 10 minute drive to the Smoky Mountain Park. 'Above the Clouds' is a deluxe cabin with the best views in the entire area. It borders the Great Smoky Mountains and overlooks Wears Valley with one of the most scenic, panoramic views in the Smokies. A previous guest said 'everyone should see this view at least once in their lifetime.' This rental is pet friendly and handicap accessible with a mountain boardwalk along the ridge over toward private community swimming pool.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This wheelchair accessible cabin made it possible for our entire family to enjoy a beautiful vacation together. My husband is in a power wheelchair and 2 of the 3 levels of the cabin are accessible allowing him to be part of the family activities. The beds are on an open frame so we were able to easily use our hoyer lift and there are 2 roll-in showers which worked well for our needs.

The owners of the cabin were very helpful leading up to our trip. The cabin itself is well equipped with everything you would need in the kitchen, entertainment options, and even WiFi.

The location is fantastic for getting into Smoky Mountain National Park on a less traveled entrance. The only thing that surprised us was the very steep drive up to the cabin if you're not used to driving in the mountains.

We are already talking about planning our next vacation to the cabin!

(Owner's Note: These great guests have returned several times! The steep part of that paved road is only 1/2 mile. We know it seems longer, especially the first time, but the views are well worth it!

Beautiful cabin with absolutely beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

While we were here we went into the park and did some hiking but ironically when we got back to the cabin, the best views we saw all day were from the porch! Truly panoramic, the photos don't really even capture it. Everything seemed really new and clean. The bedrooms were spacious, the kitchen well equipped, but with the beautiful October weather we spent most of the time on the porch just relaxing and taking in the reviews. Pretty easy to get to as well, especially considering its mountain top views. If you're looking for a more peaceful entrance to the Smokys (especially compared to Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge...) I would absolutely recommend staying here!

Amazing mountian views

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was perfect size for our family including our 2 dogs we were able to bring along. It has everything you could possibly need for a stay. The view is beyond incredible, we would wake up each day and just look out into the mountians and valley. There is so much wild life to watch and enjoy. We ventured off to Cades Cove in the national park which is an 11 mile vehicle tour where we were able to see a few bears in their natural habitat and explore the wilderness. This cabin is located very close to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg were we spent a few days enjoying all the restaurants and attractions. This was my second visit and I plan on returning in the future!!! Best place in the world.

A week at Above The Clouds was wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Well appointed. just the right size for extended family of 8. The Handicap Accessibility was wonderful.

The "Cabin Book" mentions that it was built to withstand Hurricane Force winds, and we were glad it was. One night we estimated the wind speeds to be around 75 - 80 mph. We watched our reflections get large and small in the picture windows.

We enjoyed Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, without ever having to leave the cabin. Kitchen was stocked with everything we would need to cook, only ate out a couple of times, which saved on expenses.

Having access to high chair and pack & play helped with what needed to be hauled in.

Highly recommend the; Great Smokey Mountain Railroad trip from Bryson City, NC. For History Buffs - All the information available at Oak Ridge, TN regarding the "Secret City / Manahatten Project", some areas are still classified/restricted. And of course anything in the National Park.

The younger ones are already planning their return trip, we will stay again.

Thanks Connie and Paul for a wonderful facility.

Owner's Response: We're so glad that our cabin and location met your expectations in so many ways! We get all kinds of mountain weather, including that it sometimes snows or rains upside down! Thank you for reading the information we put in the cabin book, and knowing that a structural engineer was employed when the cabin was built let you relax and enjoy the show. On your next visit, you may want to tour Tuckaleechee Caverns in Townsend. History and geology lesson in a very interesting tour! - Connie & Paul

Super clean

  • 5 of 5

Very clean cabin with lots of room. Kitchen cabinets well stocked with anything we needed. Quality everything. Not full of cheap towels sheets or kitchen appliances / plates etc.

You get what you pay for here and also has plenty of privacy with a nice yard. Unbeatable view.

Also a nice hiking trail.

Ridgetop cabin with panoramic views of Wears Valley and the Smoky Mountains to the south and west, toward Gatlinburg, Smokies, and Pigeon Forge to the north and east. Close enough to everything, yet semi-secluded and peaceful. 20 minute drive to Pigeon Forge, 27 mins. to Dollywood. 5 mins. to GSMNP entrance. If you want to visit Cades Cove early in the morning -- this is a great starting point. Beautiful drive through the Park -- cabin is located half way between Cades Cove and Gatlinburg.

Explore Townsend - the Quiet Side of the Smokies. Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center has free areas & minimal admission -- very interesting! Caves, bike riding & good restaurants in and near Townsend also.

There are only 8 cabins on this dead end road -- this is not one of those cookie cutter resorts! 3 cabins are owned by my family -- great for a reunion - ask about renting multiple cabins!

Summertime - Private swimming pool is shared by only 8 cabins.
