Our Jewel by the Sea - Mika Lani is an exceptional vacation home, located on a beautiful protected snorkel bay containing colorful tropical fish and coral, with the ocean reef just beyond. You will be immersed in this aquatic wonderland just a few steps away from this private oceanfront retreat. Every room has a view of the ocean. This is a romantic, enchanting get-away for two.
There are many windows allowing for breathtaking views. Every amenity inside is luxurious, from the silk-like linens to the granite gourmet kitchen, from the dinnerware to the decorator touches in the furnishings. It includes high speed Internet and WiFi, SMART flat screen TV, well-stocked kitchen (just bring your fresh foods), snorkels, fins, beach reef shoes, beach towels, 2 kayaks, other aquatic amenities, guide books and insider information to make your Big Island Hawaiian vacation special and memorable. Sip your favorite beverage while relaxing in the oceanfront jacuzzi. Total serenity is yours. Just pack your swim suit and come on over.
Mika Lani is designed for two people only. It could be your honeymoon, a romantic get away, or any special occasion. Upgrades abound so that you have the comforts and amenities of home, yet far far from home. The home is small, yet roomy – just one bedroom with 2 upscale bathrooms. The surrounding lanai (deck) is huge with three sides facing the ocean. You will delight in the jacuzzi that sits right out on the oceanfront lanai. We have created a mini private oasis for you. The house is maintained to 5-Star standards. The décor is modern, serene, Zen-like, with Hawaiian touches scattered throughout – from the orchid sink to the wave-like tile, from abundant Hawaiian flowers to sea-foam glass highlights in many of the decorator touches.
The surrounding nature and the natural beauty of the area are astounding. Snorkeling is right outside your doorstep. The snorkel ponds are protected by a coral reef so they are calm, yet the crashing ocean waves are just beyond. We are located within a Marine Life Conservation district. One mile away, you can soak in the volcanically heated warm ponds of Ahalanui. A little farther down the road, you can surf or boogey board with the locals at Isaac Hale Beach, also known as Pohoiki. Volcano National Park is approximately one hour away. Black sand beaches, waterfalls, nature hikes, steam vent caves, botanical gardens and scenic drives through rain forests are all nearby. Hilo, the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands, lies just 40 minutes away. This is old Hawaii at its natural best.

We fell in love in Hawaii and with Hawaii, and decided it had to be an intrinsic part of our lives. During the past 12 years, we have opened our vacation homes on the Hilo side of the Big Island for guests to share in our dream of Paradise. Our passion is providing you with lifetime memories of your very special trip to Hawaii.
Why Sara/Jamie chose Kapoho
This unique property is located just steps from the water. It is one of only 8 houses on the State Marine Preserve. The Hilo side of the Big Island is lush and green and has many exotic fruits and flowers. It is also old Hawaii at its best. It takes you off the tourist track, while you still vacation in luxury.

Lovely home in a spectacular place
Our second stay at Mika Lani, again wonderful. The house is so well set up and thoughtful. We come for the snorkeling, which again was endlessly fascinating. A couple of things that need fixing about the house that will help: The lanai screens no longer work and are frozen with rust—this is important to shade the house a bit from the hot afternoon sun. Also the towel rack in the bedroom bath needs to be re-affixed to the wall, it has loosened. Relatively minor items, just mentioning so you know. Noting that Mika Lani is for sale, we hope that the new owners continue to rent it because we hope to return again.
Property well maintained. Hot tub a bonus- ready to use as soon as we got there. So easy to snorkel in tide pools- walk right in. Best snorkeling on Big Island.
Beautiful and private spot
What a marvelous find. We've been to the Big Island many times and never snorkeled in the Kapoho Tide Pools below Hilo. We had stayed previously in Hilo at one of Jamie and Sara's other rentals and been very happy there. We'd always wanted to come to Mika Lanai and we finally did this March. The house is spotless with lots of glass and light. The lanai circles the entire cottage and we spent many hours on the lounges in front of the large pool right in front.
The snorkeling was all we could've hoped for. You entered the water right in front of the cottage and the underwater terrain was like swimming over the Grand Canyon.
The bed for two is smaller than a queen and there is only one sofa to sit on in the living room. But spend all your time on the lanai. You won't regret booking this jewel of a place.

A Hidden Gem!
We are so glad we had the opportunity to stay in Kapoho and we could not have picked a better house to stay in! We have been to the Big Island many times over the years but had never taken the time to explore this area and we are so elated we did. The house was absolutely perfect for the two of us and a great value. The location of the house on the tidepools could not be better. The wrap around deck was where we spent a great deal of time, enjoying the views and we found it so very peaceful and relaxing. The hot tub was an added bonus! It was great to just relax in the tub while enjoying the fantastic ocean view. Having two bathrooms and an outdoor shower was super convenient! We also loved the hammocks on the deck...we need to get some of those!! Mika Lani had everything we could possibly need, and it was very clean and well maintained. Communications with Sara and Jamie were excellent from beginning to end, with spot on directions and a helpful guide book about the area and the house in general. As avid divers we were a little skeptical about what we would see snorkelling but it was excellent. A very healthy and varied reef fish population, lots of turtles and other ocean dwellers: We spent a great deal of time for days exploring the majority of these pools and never got bored. It was so easy to get in and out of the tidepools at the front of the house; we looked around and didn’t think there was a better location to be had. So if you want to get away from it all, relax in a serene setting and do it in comfort this is a great place!
Jewel by the Sea Cottage (November 2017 stay)
The cottage was amazing and we truly enjoy the time we spent there. The location of the cottage on the tide pools made for easily accessibility to great snorkeling and swimming and the views are great. The kitchen was very well supplied and the inside layout was spacious for two, including two bathrooms with showers. It was great walking around the secluded neighbor and we loved the remoteness of the cottage's location. The closest shopping is in Pahoa (8 miles) so we brought in most of our food for our 5 day stay.
Cozy, sunny home directly on the beautiful snorkel tide pools. Colorful coral and fish just steps to the water. Other Activities: Coral Reefing, Hiking, Bicycling, Botanical Gardens, Scenic Drives,, Zip LIning, etc
