Overview

About the property

Oceanfront House - 1 Bedroom - 2 Baths - (Sleeps 2)

Our Jewel by the Sea - Mika Lani is an exceptional vacation home, located on a beautiful protected snorkel bay containing colorful tropical fish and coral, with the ocean reef just beyond. You will be immersed in this aquatic wonderland just a few steps away from this private oceanfront retreat. Every room has a view of the ocean. This is a romantic, enchanting get-away for two.

There are many windows allowing for breathtaking views. Every amenity inside is luxurious, from the silk-like linens to the granite gourmet kitchen, from the dinnerware to the decorator touches in the furnishings. It includes high speed Internet and WiFi, SMART flat screen TV, well-stocked kitchen (just bring your fresh foods), snorkels, fins, beach reef shoes, beach towels, 2 kayaks, other aquatic amenities, guide books and insider information to make your Big Island Hawaiian vacation special and memorable. Sip your favorite beverage while relaxing in the oceanfront jacuzzi. Total serenity is yours. Just pack your swim suit and come on over.

Mika Lani is designed for two people only. It could be your honeymoon, a romantic get away, or any special occasion. Upgrades abound so that you have the comforts and amenities of home, yet far far from home. The home is small, yet roomy – just one bedroom with 2 upscale bathrooms. The surrounding lanai (deck) is huge with three sides facing the ocean. You will delight in the jacuzzi that sits right out on the oceanfront lanai. We have created a mini private oasis for you. The house is maintained to 5-Star standards. The décor is modern, serene, Zen-like, with Hawaiian touches scattered throughout – from the orchid sink to the wave-like tile, from abundant Hawaiian flowers to sea-foam glass highlights in many of the decorator touches.

The surrounding nature and the natural beauty of the area are astounding. Snorkeling is right outside your doorstep. The snorkel ponds are protected by a coral reef so they are calm, yet the crashing ocean waves are just beyond. We are located within a Marine Life Conservation district. One mile away, you can soak in the volcanically heated warm ponds of Ahalanui. A little farther down the road, you can surf or boogey board with the locals at Isaac Hale Beach, also known as Pohoiki. Volcano National Park is approximately one hour away. Black sand beaches, waterfalls, nature hikes, steam vent caves, botanical gardens and scenic drives through rain forests are all nearby. Hilo, the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands, lies just 40 minutes away. This is old Hawaii at its natural best.

Mika Lani is a very popular vacation rental. So that you will not be disappointed, please check our availability calendar. It is updated daily. You are wise to book ahead, because we are already getting inquiries for 2018 from returning guests. If Mika Lani is not available, check our other 2 nearby vacation rentals:

About Sara/Jamie

We fell in love in Hawaii and with Hawaii, and decided it had to be an intrinsic part of our lives. During the past 12 years, we have opened our vacation homes on the Hilo side of the Big Island for guests to share in our dream of Paradise. Our passion is providing you with lifetime memories of your very special trip to Hawaii.

Why Sara/Jamie chose Pahoa

This unique property is located just steps from the water. It is one of only 8 houses on the State Marine Preserve. The Hilo side of the Big Island is lush and green and has many exotic fruits and flowers. It is also old Hawaii at its best. It takes you off the tourist track, while you still vacation in luxury.

What makes this house unique

Our guest comments say it all. Many guests return year after year to relax and rejuvenate. Staying at Mika Lani is a gift to yourself.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We anticipated that Mika Lani would be a wonderful home since we previously stayed in a home on the beach in LA owned by the same person. We wanted a quiet retreat on the ocean away from the usual tourist areas like Kailua, and hoped for a place we could snorkel without a long drive. Mika Lani was perfect!

The directions and arrival instructions were clear and complete. We were welcomed by a lovely gift basket, fresh flowers and a bottle of champagne in the refrigerator. The "Aloha" book was wonderfully complete with detailed information about the area, markets, sights, and a tide table.

From the living room and the lanai, you can see and hear the surf about 200 yards away, but you are perhaps only 20 feet from the Kapoho Tidepools, a premier snorkeling location. The lanai wraps around the entire home so you can always find a comfortable, breezy, shaded spot to read. The lanai has 2 hammocks, a table and chairs for dining, comfortable chairs, and other seating so you are comfortable.

It is open, airy, with comfortable furniture, beds , appliances, dishes, big screen TV, WiFi and internet. Attention to high quality and detail is evident everywhere in contrast to the Ikea furnishings of many VRBOs. There are ceiling fans in all the rooms and lots of screened windows and big sliding doors which let the breeze in.

The “snorkel shed” off the lanai contains fins, masks and reef socks and a tub for rinsing the equipment, plus 2 bikes useful for peddling on the quiet streets and roads nearby along with an outdoor shower. Also on the lanai are a washer and dryer and a hot tub. You will also find two kayaks which we may use on our next trip. Everything you might want or need is there.

If you prefer to tour, Hilo is only 40 minutes away, and if you want to see the volcano it is an easy drive. The Hilo airport helicopter allowed us to see and smell the lava flows.

Mika Lani gave us a wonderful 11 days of quiet, sun and snorkeling, exactly what we were hoping for and exceeding our expectations. Seldom, perhaps never, have I stayed in a place that was so comfortable and inviting. We simply wanted to stay there and not drive anywhere. We have already reserved it for a return trip. Need I say more?

What a paradise location!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were looking for a property that was close to both the Hilo area and the volcanoes so this seemed in the middle of both. I liked the fact that it wasn't commercial with lots of people and seemed private.

What a beautiful property and the owners were very nice to deal with in setting up the reservation. They sent plenty of information that we needed in advance of our arrival.

Once we got to the island and located Mika Lani (excellent directions, by the way !!!) , we were amazed to find a wonderful home full of amenities and right on the water. No loud surf, but just the gentle tidal pools that were loaded with fish. Snorkeling was AMAZING and my husband used 3 rolls of films shooting the coral and fish in his underwater camera.

We had breakfast on the front lanai every morning to the amazing views and the birds chirping and fish jumping. What a relaxing place. You will love the serenity here.

The facility is REALLY clean, down to the BBQ Grill, hottub, and washer and dryer. There is nothing that you will need that this home doesn't supply. There are snorkel masks, fins, kayaks, towels, a nice welcoming basket of goodies and even champagne. The kitchen is VERY well equipped! Everything was thought of by the gracious hosts.

We will come back to the islands at some point and we will stay at Mika Lani again. We highly recommend this vacation rental!

Don't hesitate to rent this spot. For the price, you'll have a wonderful spot that would be hard to beat.

We highly recommend Mika Lani!

Spectacular

  • 5 of 5

What a stunningly beautiful place on earth. Miki Lani was the first place we stayed in Hawaii. As we were leaving, I told my husband..."it will all be down hill from here". Even though we stayed in some other wonderful properties, we joked over and over , "it's no Miki Lani".😏?😏? Tppropertyhad The property had everything we could possibly need. The snorkeling was as good as anyplace I have ever seen. During the week, we practically had the entire area to ourselves. It was also a good location for visiting Hilo and the Volcano's. We will certainly be back. Mahalo.

Heavenly

  • 5 of 5

We blew it and only booked three nights here - we'd been told that there wasn't much to do in Puna, it rained a lot, etc. First, this wasn't our experience at all - there's so much we could have done with a few more days! And second, just hanging around this lovely home was plenty to do! Our stay in Kapoho turned out to be the highlight of our 10 days on the Big Island.

My favorite thing was sitting in the perfectly sited hammock chair and reading a book while a gentle breeze rocked the chair. My husband's favorite activity was swimming/snorkeling for a short while, then drying off on the lanai, then repeating over and over. We also took lots of walks and bike rides around the area. And we joined Kalapana Cultural Tours' hike and bike trip out to see the surface lava, which was amazing! Highly recommend. The drive to Kalapana down 137 is not to be missed - gorgeous scenery. And Uncle Robert Awa's night market on Wednesdays is worth booking your vacation around!

This home is perfect for two - enough space to spread out, perfectly appointed (we kept thinking, oh they won't have this or that, but they always did!), and Sara and Jamie are lovely and gracious hosts, even leaving us some goodies and a bottle of champagne to help us celebrate our anniversary.

We can't wait to come back - and take it from us, you're going to want five or more nights here!

Incredible surroundings and well appointed

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for 9 days as part of a 40th anniversary vacation. The house was spectacular and had all of the amenities you could ask for for a couple. While a little remote from town, the surroundings and house are incredible. If or when coming back to the Big Island we would stay there again and would definitely recommend to friends or family.

Honeymoon paradise

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from 6 glorious nights at Mika Lani. We could not have picked a more perfect place for our honeymoon. We loved everything about this oceanfront jewel by the sea--the location, the house itself, the amenities and the excellent hospitality and communication of the owners. The setting is truly unparalleled--from the incredible sunrises, the crashing ocean waves and palm trees along the shore, the turquoise tide pools filled with tropical fish literally in your front yard to the glow of the caldera visible from the lanai in the star-filled night; you will not be disappointed. The snorkeling was amazing and you can have the entire tide pool to yourself in the morning and evening. Although it is public it was never too crowded even on the weekend. We also took advantage of the kayaks at high tide to explore the shoreline and the bikes to ride through the neighborhood and also out to see the lava flow into the ocean. The house itself was designed using maximum glass to make it seem like you are always connected with the natural beauty all around you. I especially loved the low clear glass walls used to surround the lanais on all sides of the house-so much better than a solid or slatted enclosure. I also loved the ceiling fans in every room including both bathrooms--so great to each have our own. Aside from being in the water, my husband's favorite spot was the lounge/daybed on the outside lanai; mine was the hot tub right after coming in from the water. Also, fyi, I was worried about the drive to/from Kona airport as our airline did not fly into Hilo, but that was not a problem at all. We arrived early and enjoyed taking the long way to Mika Lani and being able to stop and explore sights along the way.

Returning we took the Saddle Road which was did take two hours, but it was an easy drive.

I highly recommend this wonderful house and hope you enjoy your time there as much as we did. Aloha.
