Casa Que Canta (House that Sings) is a Spanish style villa with a central courtyard and 2nd level terrace facing the ocean. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE HAVE GRID POWER AND HENCE AIR CONDITIONING IN THE BEDROOMS - NOT TYPICAL OF MOST VILLAS ALONG THE COAST.

ALSO BE SURE TO READ OUR REVIEWS. GUEST CONSISTENTLY GIVE US HIGH RATINGS. The bedrooms are all on the 2nd level - each has a terrace. One have a king beds, two have queens and twins.. We also offer on site all inclusive meals at an added cost per person. Sandra is an excellent chef and has always gotten high praise from our guests. The villa is a located 5 miles north of Mahahual Mexico. The beaches are white sand with a coral reef just 250 yards off shore. Ideal for swimming and sun bathing. Area is know for world class snorkeling and diving. Reef in front of the property has a number of beautiful corral heads. Snorkeling & dive trips also available in nearby Mahahual. There are many restaurants, fun shops, & great Mayan ruins near by. If you like to fish there is both world class Fly fishing for Tarpon and Bonefish and excellent off shore fishing available for charter in town. Fishing is consistently good.

Joe & Maureen

Things to do at Casa Que Canta: The area is rich in Mayan culture and history. Nearby ruins of Chacchoben are a must visit along with Kohonlich and Dzibenache if you have time. Lake Bacalar and the old Spanish fort also make a great day trip. The area is also rich in Cennotes some of which are almost too beautiful to describe. Hidden Worlds Cenote has been featured on a National Geographic special.

Majahual itself is a fast growing Mexican fishing village with many good restaurants and nice shops. Very busy on cruise ship days, but extremely quiet in between. Beaches are wonderful.

Water Sports: Traveling to Mexico for many is all about the Ocean and the beach. The Costa Maya is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico - almost all of them protected by the worlds 2nd largest barrier reef. The reef at Casa Que Canta is only 200 meters off shore. This means the swimming is exceptional - no currents - no rip tides - extremely safe even for small children. The waves are very light and the depth drops off slowly - you can walk out 100 meters and still be wait high. The reef provides great snorkeling - tons of corral - fish - even an occasional lobster if you watch closely. The nearby fisherman go out almost everyday and can provide fresh fish for use on the grill. Or if you like bring a spear gun and try getting your own.

Snorkeling from the kayaks we have is great on the calmer days and very safe.

About Joe La Bore

Maureen and I retired to Mexico in 2009. We choose Mahahual because of the great beaches, laid back life style, and great diving. The town is safe, quiet, and a great place to vacation or retire. The weather is nearly perfect your round - 70's at night - 80's by day. Warmest months are early Fall when the temps are 5-8 degrees higher and the breezes die down.

Joe La Bore purchased this villa in 200

Why Joe La Bore chose El Placer

Casa Que Canta is just north of Mahahual on great beach. It is about as close to town as one can get and yet still have a secluded home on a private beach. We consistently are one of the highest rated properties in the area by our guests. In addition, our caretakers have been with us for 7 years and provide an exceptional level of service.

What makes this villa unique

You will be vacationing in a home - not a hotel room. Maureen and I furnished the entire villa not as a rental, but as a home we would live in. Guest are always amazed at the level of detail and quality of the furnishings. As a result we get a lot of repeat visitors and are often booked early in the year for key dates.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This place is just beautiful! Unfortunately we are only staying one night. Next time we come to Mahahual we will have to make reservations for more than one night. Joe & Maureen, your home is amazing. Hope to see you all again. The girls had a great time snorkeling and kayaking.

Have a great future,

Randy, Lisa, Jennifer, & Donna Burack

The area is famous for Bonefish, Tarpon, and Permit. All inclusive fishing packages are available on a daily and weekly basis. Roof top pool is a 'plunge pool' - large unheated hot tub style - great for watching the stars at night or to rinse off after swimming in the ocean. We can also arrange diving from several excellent dive centers in town or tours to the nearby Mayan ruins or the Zip lines in lake Bacalar. There is always something fun to do.

Costa Maya Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed together with our 5 friends in Casa que Canta for 7 days. The very 1st day we regretted that our vacation was too short and on our last day we almost cried as we did not want to leave this paradise. The villa is very nicely designed, it is spacious and gave each of us lots of privacy. Joe is very hospitable owner, he was always there when we needed him and at the same time he gave us full ownership of the villa and the beach at all times. The property managers, Sandra and Manuel, took great care of the house and us. We quickly realized that Sandra is a great cook and enjoyed her delicious meals that were fully customized to our preferences. We also loved the fact that the villa is within 10 minutes driving to Majahual and close to Maya ruins (the closes site is only 45 min away). The last but not the list - my husband and our friend really enjoyed fishing trip arranged for us by Manuel, they caught giant barracuda, cabrilla, and parrot fish. The area is also great for spear-fishing, Joe caught huge lobster that way and shared it with us - it tasted heavenly!

We will be back next year!

Amazing Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We went for a short 5 day vacation, and this property did not disappoint. A beautiful property right on the water. We had lots of privacy, but we had the owner Joe, on the other side when we needed anything. Joe and his caretakers took great care of us. They made sure that we had everything that we needed. The caretakers, Sondra and Emmanuel were awesome. We took our 4 month old son with us, and Sondra helped care for him while my wife and I went out fishing for the day.

Joe is basically a local and went out of his way to help set up fishing, diving or anything we were interested in. we really loved our stay and plan on coming back soon.

Mother Daughter Trip of a life time

  • 5 of 5

This place is absolutely amazing. Private beach, just a 10 minutes drive to the cute little town of Mahahual (good shopping, scubba diving, ect). Our Veladors (Sandra and Emanuel) took such good care of us, making us traditional ceveche and cooking us FRESH lobster caught just earlier that day. Arranging for a professional masseuse to come to the house for Massages on the beach. Arranging for us to have a private day tour of the Mayan Ruins, Kayaking a gorgeous pristine lake of 7 colors and finishing the day with a pineapple plantation tour all with food and drinks included for a very reasonable price. After a few days of adventures the roof top dipping pool and tanning lounge was my favorite spot to just relax and enjoy the 360 degree view around the property, with the ocean to the east and the lush green jungle to the west. My mother and I stayed for a week and it almost just didn't seem like enough, I am going to come back and bring all the girls! I would recommend this place to every one of my friends and relatives.

A beautiful and spacious house but in desperate need of repairs and maintenance.

  • 3 of 5

Spent a two day weekend here with our family of 12 including adults and children and disappointed with the lack of maintenance. First, we had to give the kitchen a good clean-up since we had taken our supplies for our time there. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped but had not been recently cleaned. The counters near the stove were sticky with accumulated residues/grease and the place has a lot of ants. Within minutes of putting food on the counters and it gets covered with ants. There is a shared bathroom on one wing of the house and neither the exterior door nor the door accessing the Master could close properly so there is no privacy. To make matters worse, it rained one day and the mosquitos came out in full force. So using that bathroom was most uncomfortable as the mosquitoes had gathered here since the exterior door cannot lock and remains ajar. The same happened with one of the half bathroom on the ground floor. The door cannot lock thus remains slightly open. There are two wooden lounge chairs per Suite on the gound floor, we tried moving it so we can all gather on one side of the house but the chair was broken, yet still kept there for guests to use as is. We had read that the place had a gas grill so we took meats to grill. Not so. There was no grill but we were provided with a small charcoal grill on request so that was very helpful. The first night, we ran out of running water so in the morning we had to wait to repairs to be done to the pump for us to get water. I thought we were going to have daily maid services but the only thing we got on day 1 was the garbage removed from the kitchen. On day 2 the beds were also made in addition to the garbage taken out. The fountain as per the description was not a fountain. It was stagnant dark water which only contributes to breeding more mosquitoes which was a major issue during our stay. Daytime by the beach was great. Outdoors at night was unbearable due to the mosquitoes. Lastly, please update your images as the place does have some changes. From the official photo it appears that the Master Suites on the the second level has a thatched roof with a hammock. Not so the verandah has no roof nor hammock.

Owner's Response: This review is from a guest that started his stay by bringing in extra people with no warning in excess of the villas listed capacity. The complaint about mosquitoes seems odd since it is late summer in the tropics. On a calm night being outside after dark is not a good idea. That is why we have screens and airconditioning. The doors that were mentioned do close - just a bit tightly due to expansion from humidity. As to the maid service and cleanliness - look at all the other reviews we have had that rate our caretakers as fabulous. The feedback as an owner that I received from my caretakers on this guest is the opposite - villa was clean on arrival and took hours to clean up after they left. The one correct statement is that regarding the balconies. We removed the thacthed roofs at the suggestion of several guests that wanted to see the night sky and not feel so closed in. It also increases the breeze a good deal. We will update the photos of that area.

Great family stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over Christmas 2015 during our first family trip to Mexico. Joe was really helpful, taking time to answer all of our questions before and during via phone and email (he was staying the US). Our kids are 15+ years old and had a fantastic time, whether lounging around, napping on the beach, taking photographs of the beautiful scenery, playing games, kayaking or jumping in the waves. The wind blew most of our 10 days, so no snorkeling, but it also made for much more exciting kayaking in the waves and we took them out every day or two. The temperature was great all of the time. Sandra and Emmanuel (and their families) were wonderful, took great care of everything, and conversed freely with each of us according to our various levels of Spanish fluency. We felt like we were an extended part of their family and even shared a meal together for a few hours on Christmas Eve. One note: the last bit of road is unpaved with a few puddles and one gravel place that flooded 6-8 inches in a heavy rain. The minivan van we rented had no trouble getting through (and a lot of people there had smaller cars, so no problem). Someone added sand bags to the side of the road a few days before we left and the water had receded. There is plenty more to explore in the area and we look forward to the possibility of returning again sometime!

The House Really Does Singe

  • 5 of 5

Casa Que Canta is a wonderful house built around an open air courtyard. There are gorgeous views of the even more gorgeous water and a lovely small private beach with super pretty landscaping (enough coconuts to feed a small village. coconut water addicts will get their fix and then some). There are more trees than the pictures here show, and there are now neighbors, which the pictures don't show either. But privacy is excellent and the extra trees add beauty and much needed shade.

The rooms are simple but colorful, clean, rustically elegant and comfortable. Nothing too fancy here, but you don't miss the (unnecessary) bells and whistles while you are lounging in the hammock on your own beach!

Joe, the owner, is a wealth of knowledge. He is super friendly and would be happy to stop by for a drink and help you plan your visit or chat about the local scene.

Emanuel and Sandra, the veladors (caretakers), are fabulous!!! Both are great cooks and amazingly kind, courteous, and attentive.

On each side of the pretty interior courtyard is a two bedroom apartment that you can rent singularly or together. They connect via a second floor interior balcony that includes an amazing sitting area that looks out and over the beautiful beach to the ocean.

Last, Mahahual itself is awesome!! Great food (ask Joe where to get fish tacos) and if you like water activities, you can snorkel, dive, stand up paddle board, swim, kayak, and more to your heart's content. The snorkeling is top-rate -- go!!! This is a sleepy-ish town, so if you are looking for bumpin' dance parties, you may want to go somewhere else. If you want a quieter vacation (but not quiet), try Mahahual.

Casa Que Canta is truly the 'House that Sings'. We are located south of Cancun near the small ocean front town of Mahahual. If you want to get away from the crowds, enjoy quiet beaches, great diving, fishing, see Mayan ruins that are not crowded, or just relax - this is the place. Mahahual may some day be the next Playa del Carmen, but at the moment it remains small and charming. Many great little restaurants - shops - and lots of things to do. Snorkel the reef - world class all along the coast - take a fly fishing or ocean fishing charter. Go zip lining in Bacalar - visit Cenote Azul - largest centote in the Yucatan. Go scuba diving with one of several excellent dive shops in the area. Read what prior guests have to say about there time here - they always wish they had stayed longer and plan to come back.
