Lovely Washington ~DC~ House in Upscale Neighborhood.

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6-9)

This is a high quality, 3 BR 3 BA single family home in one of the best neighborhoods in Washington, DC. The house is located on Livingston St., NW, 2&1/2 blocks off Connecticut Ave., zip code 20015. The 20015 zip code is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the city. It is safe and quiet, yet close to downtown and the museums and monuments and all the other attractions the Nation's capital has to offer. There is a chic commercial area close by at Connecticut Ave. with shops, restaurants, banks, grocery stores, Starbucks, a restored vintage movie theater, a community library, an old fashioned diner, etc.

The house is also close to the Friendship Heights Metro station. If you are bringing a car, your free visitors parking pass (provided by owner for up to two cars) will enable you to park for free within 2 blocks or less of the Metro stop. Otherwise, Metro is a 6-block walk or a brief bus ride. It is a pleasant walk to Metro through a pretty neighborhood with the Starbucks and a great deli on the way. There is also a bus, just steps from the house, which takes you to Metro in less than 5 minutes.

Friendship Heights has probably the best shopping in the city with very high-end stores such as Tiffany's, Cartier, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, Neiman Marcus, Roche Bobois and Brooks Brothers. It also has TJMaxx, Filene's Basement and everything in-between: Bloomingdales, Border's, small boutique shops, etc, etc.

The house has three bedrooms and two full baths upstairs plus a 3rd full bath in the basement. There is a queen sleep sofa in the living room. There is also some extra sleeping space in the basement with the 3rd new small bath with shower. Downstairs is a large living room with a 51" big screen HDTV and fireplace, separate dining room, kitchen, and screened back porch with table and chairs overlooking a large, fenced back yard with a BBQ/smoker grill and some lawn furniture.

For stays of one to two weeks, rent is $300. per day ($2100. per week) with extra days after the first week pro-rated @$300. per day. For example an 8-day stay would total $2400., a 9-day stay would total $2700., etc. Lower rates can be negotiated for stays of more than 2 weeks.

For stays of less than a week, there is a 4-day minimum. Rent is $350. per day on weekday nights and $450. on weekend nights (Fri., Sat., & Sun.). For example, a four-day stay, with arrival on Thurs. and departure on Mon. would total $1700.

There are higher rates for stays which include holidays and also higher rates for spring break and the Cherry Blossom Festival. These holiday rates generally add about $50/day to the rent.

For all stays, a $1,000. security deposit is required and a $200. departure cleaning fee.

Rent includes all utilities, good quality linens, wireless internet, cable TV, all furnishings, dishes, etc.

Rental rates assume normal use of the house for families or groups of up to six people. Extra charges apply when more than six people are using the house. Extra charges also apply if you want to hold an event at the house, such as a birthday or graduation party.

About The Owner

I am a semi-retired physician. I still work part-time. I have lived in Washington, DC most of my adult life except during my medical training when I lived in Chicago, Providence, RI and Boston. I love Washington. It is a unique, exciting and beautiful city. I think it is, perhaps, the most beautiful city in the world, with only a couple of possible exceptions. In addition to just relaxing and enjoying the beauty and excitement of this city, you could spend several weeks here and still not run out of major attractions you would not want to miss. There are at least 17 major museums downtown, including the Smithsonian complex of museums and National Zoo, plus, of course, the monuments, White House, U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court and the Library of Congress, Kennedy Center, Union Station, etc. Then you can also go to Mt. Vernon, Old Town Alexandria, Georgetown and possibly even Annapolis, MD. (By the way, in addition to the Air and Space Museum downtown, there is also the newer, huge Smithsonian Air and Space Museum near Dulles Airport.) If you stayed in Washington, DC for a month, you would not run out of fun and exciting things to do. In fact, although I have already lived here for years, and there is still plenty left for me to see.

The Owner purchased this house in 1998

Why The Owner chose Chevy Chase

This is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the city of Washington. It is a quiet and safe residential area which is nonetheless right in the city and close to downtown. It is a very "upscale" neighborhood populated mostly by professionals who don't want to commute in from the suburbs.

What makes this house unique

It is remarkable that this particular street is right in the city of Washington and yet is so quiet you can hear a pin drop. The house is only 2&1/2 blocks off Connecticut Ave., one of the main arteries of the city. (Connecticut Ave. ends at the White House.) However, Livingston Street has the advantage of being interrupted at the next corner. This block is not a cul de sac but has a similar effect. There are very few cars except those which belong to the people who live on this block. We get almost no through traffic. This makes Livingston St. unusually quiet and also very safe for children and pets. Yet just 2&1/2 blocks away is Connecticut Ave. with all sorts of shops and restaurants, library, movie theater, Starbucks, etc. All the amenities you would want are just a few steps from the house.

I was planning for a trip with two sons and three grandchildren. I didn't want to stay in a hotel (expensive and impersonal) so I rented Maureen's home. It's in the suburbs and was within walkable distance (15-20 minutes) to the Metro station. We imagined this is how locals commute into downtown daily. The house is older and charming, and the style of architecture is totally different from our California coastal experience. There are restaurants and stores nearby. We rented a car, which turned out to be a good idea. Maureen gave us a visitor parking pass, and provided lots of great information about museums and restaurants. She was very, very helpful and kind to us. My grandkids loved her dog, which she generously shared. In response to several of the reviews, the house has a number of items being stored there, but they didn't bother us. The kitchen reminded me of the one I learned to cook in, and I loved the nostalgia of cooking on what I think was a classic O'Keefe and Merritt stove. The beds were comfortable and there were plenty of linens. The reading materials were varied and plentiful. The owner is very interesting and we enjoyed her and her house thoroughly.

Owner's Response: This WAS an incredibly nice family. I didn't meet all of the grandkids, but the ones I met were sweethearts. Meeting my dog was more a favor to me than the reverse (shelter dog, appears to have been abused, very shy, needs to meet people and learn that people will not hurt him. I sometimes ask guests if they would be willing to meet the dog.). I neglected to emphasize to my guests that there is a bus nearby which gets you to Metro in about 5 mins. if you don't want to walk or drive. A temp resident parking pass which I provide allows guests to park at Metro all day for free. Also the house is not in the suburbs. It is right in the city. This one of a handful of neighborhoods that only seems like it is in the suburbs because it is quiet and residential and safe even though it is only a couple of blocks from Connecticut Ave., one of the main arteries of Washington, DC. Restaurants and stores are only a brief walk from the house., at Connecticut Ave. Basement is used for storage, but there is also an alcove for extra sleeping space with a double bed. It is not a 4th bedroom. There are 3 bedrooms in the upstairs of the house. I have never advertised the house as anything but a 3-bedroom house, just to clarify. Sometimes, larger families or groups have complained about the items stored in the basement if they use the extra sleeping space, but it should be understood that there is plenty of space in the rest of the house. Most of my guests have been nice, but this family was extra specially nice. I loved having them stay here.

What a great place to stay. Close to DC but in a green, leafy neighborhood. Great for families.

  • 5 of 5

Well as I was just looking for a place for an upcoming trip to DC I realized that I did not leave a review last fall. My husband and I and our son and grandkids stayed in Maureen's home and it was perfect for us. The neighborhood is lovely and easily accessible to take the Metro into DC. Maureen has lived here for many years and gave good recommendations for getting around and places to eat. We took the Metro daily into DC and gave our grandkids a wonderful since of history in exploring all the DC has to offer from our Capital and White House to all the other great opportunities: The zoo is very nearby and worth a visit; the National Cathedral was a grand place to attend a service and then to take the tour into that wonderful old building with amazing views; the Smithsonian museums never disappointment; the Washington monument is amazing; the free performances at the Kennedy Center as well as the other wonderful opportunities there....I can go on and on. And then coming home each evening the this sweet house. We loved every minute of it and so appreciate Maureen's warmth and welcoming attitude towards our grandchildren. She gave our youngest (then 6) a copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer...he read it quickly and talks about "that nice lady whose house we stayed in who gave me the Tom Sawyer book." We will return.

Cozy house in a Great Neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

We (3 adults and 2 children) were fortunate enough to stay at this house for an extended July 4th weekend. The location is fantastic: a quiet upscale neighborhood, with plenty of parking (pass provided by the owner) and easy access to the Metro as well as local neighborhood amenities (Broad Branch Market and the Water Park at the local school were a big hit). The house is a bit old, but it is very clean and cozy, and it is well appointed (whether cooking or playing board games). And Maureen was a great host, she was warm and accommodating but not intrusive. We hope to be back some day. Thanks!

Not what these photos show!

  • 1 of 5

Whoever said that this is a lovely place to stay, must live in a hovel. The home is shabby, jammed full of old mismatched furniture, junk everywhere (books, magazines in stacks, blood pressure machine and broken lamps in the living room. The room also contains an old x-ray machine, the 6 foot tall shield panel for the machine and a 20-year-old 72 inch projection TV that has a blown out picture - it is 60 inches long 24 inches deep and 4 1/2 feet tall. Not a chair in the house offers any place to sit comfortably for more than a moment, the couch is old, flat, uncomfortable and covered wth a sheet. The dining room is cluttered with tables, hutches and an assortment of her mother's stuff (eg, 23 assorted table mats). The basement bedroom is so full of junk that you have to move to get to the bed The best was the the dusty halloween pumpkin that faced you at the bottom off the stairs piled on top of assorted junk.

Bathrooms are suitable, bedroom is musty and the house generally needs a complete cleaning. We left the city 4 days early. Kitchen is old but works, after you let her show you how they work (i.e., pilot light). Loved the porch no comfortable chairs but two dining room tables.

And there was evidence that she does visit the house when you are out. Moves things around.

The friendship heights metro is a one mile walk, the Connecticut Ave stores are three long blocks away up and down two steep hills. Parking is adequate.

Owner's Response: Wow! I have no idea why I got this nasty review. I have 25 reviews, almost all of which are 5-star reviews. These people got a 3 bedroom house in one of the best neighborhoods in DC for $300./day. Most people have loved the house, the location and me. The woman who rented the house seemed nice, but it appears her very ill husband, with whom I had almost no contact is the one who wrote the review. This man has recently had a lung transplant, a heart valve replacement and is on oxygen. His wife drove him up from Florida, a 2-day trip, and upon their arrival an oxygen company came to the house and delivered 2 tanks of oxygen. The review contains a number of flat-out lies. All I can think is that this frail, elderly man is simply not playing with a full deck. I was not told that someone that sick would be staying in the house. I was also misled about how many people would be staying in the house. This was a 2-week rental. Various relatives from the west coast, New England and locally came and went. I never got the requested list of everyone who would be staying in the house, nor did I get the security deposit or the $200. housekeeping fee. They left the house very dirty, but it was not dirty when they arrived. I left them a phone message asking them to please send the housekeeping fee. The nasty review came after that. The house is old, but it is immaculately clean. There is no sheet over the living room couch. The couch has a slipcover which can be removed and washed. There is no basement bedroom. I have never advertised the house as anything but a 3-bedroom house, and all the bedrooms are upstairs. The DR contains a large table, chairs, a china cupboard, bookcase and a buffet. There is a small drop-leaf table in the corner on which are placemats, coasters and a cutlery tray. These are normal DR furnishings. There is nothing else in the DR. I am sorry, but this so-called review is full of lies. I went into the house when they were not home, twice and only after calling the wife to ask if that would be OK. I was told that would be fine. I had to go into the house to take care of a couple of things because another family had left at 11 AM These people were told they could not check in until 4 PM because the housekeeper and I needed 5 hours to clean the house. Instead, they showed up at 1:30. I told them they could use the upstairs, but they ignored this and took over the house. Out of space. Please call me with questions.

Nice place in a wonderful neighborhood

great location in Chevy Chase DC near the Maryland line. Walk to grocery, pharmacies, and restaurant. Lots of take out and delivery option. Love cooking breakfast and lunch. Maureen welcomed us and took great care for our stay. Our grandson loved the water park only a couple blocks away.

Perfect base for DC family visit

  • 5 of 5

Another year, and another stay at what my family considers its Washington DC "home". The location is ideal (a quiet neighborhood yet near shopping) and easily accessible. Having a car, depending on your program -- we visit a lot of friends and relatives all over the Washington area -- can be useful. The owner who, contrary to what one reviewer suggested, was a discreet neighbor but helpful if asked, obliged by providing us with a free parking permit. We entertained on the wonderful back porch and used the backyard for a family cook-out. As usual, everything was impeccable, making this property consistently one of our favorite in VRBO.
