We are very proud we have ALL 5-STAR reviews since first opening in 2007!
To our potential guests we say.....'Noho Ka Moe'uhane' or 'Live the dream'...If you are coming to the Hilo side of the Big Island to see waterfalls and experience the magnificent beauty of Hawaii's tropical wonders then this completely private and romantic property is for you. Save the beach experience for Maui, Kauai or Oahu. With a year round stream, small private lake teaming with fish and a second koi pond right outside your bedroom window this is the tropical Hawaii you only see in movies; unspoiled and totally private, just you and the sights, sounds and smells of a lush green tropical paradise. This home is located in one of the most pristine tropical areas on the Big Island called the 'Gold Coast' (only two minutes off the main road). Passing through the gates, you drive along a private 425 foot long driveway surrounded by giant tree ferns, 100 ft. tall palms, wild mango and avocado trees and a beautiful year round spring fed stream. This is the first time since it was built that this unique private estate has ever been offered as a vacation rental. Don't settle for a B&B and/or sharing a home with owners or other guests on the same property. This gated 2 acre property is 100% private...Just you and nature. Come...Live Your Dream...Live Aloha
Heaven's Door has a lovely, 2/bedroom, 2/bath cedar home on it. It is the perfect romantic location for people who want to get away from it all. Fall asleep to the ramble of the stream running over the boulders and the sounds of the tropical jungle at night then wake to native Hawaiian birds singing and flitting from tree to tree in a stunning tropical forest. Heaven's Door is also very comfortable with 2 couples who want to enjoy the unique sights and sounds of a true jungle paradise.
Build a romantic fire in the fireplace or enjoy the private indoor cedar sauna (best with two but comfortable with four). The large master bedroom welcomes you with a comfy Pillow Top King size 'Perfect Sleeper' and in-suite master bath. Both bathrooms have full size tubs and showers. The second bedroom offers you a Queen Size pillow-top bed with a view of the lower pond and the sounds of 'liquid chatter' as the stream rambles by all year round. There is also a 'full size stacked' washer/dryer combo located inside the master bath suite.
The master bedroom has a second koi pond just outside the large picture window where you can watch the koi. Both bedrooms look out onto a beautiful year round stream that runs completely along the perimeter of the property. There is a 79,000 gallon small lake, teaming with fish, both HUGE 30 year old Koi and GIANT Talapia, just outside the front door. You can feed the fish if you like, they do have two automatic fish feeder that dispense food to them twice daily but they always enjoy an extra treat from our guests. There is also an outdoor shower (cold only) for those who like to enjoy nature at its best.
Just outside your living room windows, across the pond there is a weeping wall, constantly running water down its rough lava face. These unique natural water features are often called 'Pele's Tears'. It is said of 'weeping walls' that 'Pele' the Hawaiian Fire Goddess who created the 'aina' (the land) is weeping for her children (the islands). We often see a beautiful and rare Hawaiian Hawk the 'Io (Pronounced...'Eo). She likes to come in the mornings and hunt crayfish out of the stream. Watch her from your morning breakfast table as she perches on one of the large stream boulders and enjoys her catch. There are only an estimated 1400-2100 of these beautiful birds of prey left in the Hawaiian Islands, most of those are here on the Big Island.
This lovely private property invites you to become 'one with the aina' (the land). The entire 2+ acres is it's own little secluded valley and offers you absolute privacy. It cannot be seen by any other house and has only one private gated access. This vacation rental gives you the ultimate get away from it all experience without driving out to the middle of nowhere. We are close to the main Hwy. 19, very easy to find and NO 4-WD vehicle necessary. Although this is a tropical rainforest property we are NOT 'off the grid' like most similar water feature properties are. This house has Hawaii County Water and Electricity, we are NOT dependent on solar panels, generators or catchment water as many stream and water feature properties are. We have an extensive collection (over 300 titles) of DVD's including many boxed HBO and TV Series. We offer free Wi-Fi internet access via Verizon Modem and Cradlepoint Wi-Fi router. Internet service is reliable but depends on a cellular connection and is rather slow by todays standards. Not capable of streaming video or movies, but OK for checking Facebook and doing your emails. Remember....You're on vacation:) You may find cheaper or more expensive rentals but there's only one "Heaven's Door"....Years (since 2007) of 100% 5-Star reviews can't be wrong. Get more info on Heaven's Door, a once in a lifetime Tropical Hawaii experience:)
Location...Location....Location...."Heaven's Door" is very centrally located to all your sightseeing needs. The Hilo side of the Big Island is truly unique and offers unparalleled sightseeing. This property is located just off Hwy. 19 and is close to numerous waterfalls; Umauma Falls & two different zip line adventures, are all a short 3 min. drive away, Kolekole Park (5 min.), Akaka and Kahuna Falls (10 min.), Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots (25 min) and beautiful Onomea Bay as well as Onomea Botanical Gardens (10 min.) and only 20 minutes from the quaint historical Hilo Town. Pick up local fresh fruits and vegetables at the wonderful Hilo farmers market Wed. & Sat. are their big days but there are always a few vendors during the the rest of the week.
Take a drive up to Volcano's National Park and experience Madam Pele (Hawaiian Goddess of Fire) up close and personal. Hike out to where the 'Aina' (land) is being born as Kiluea flows hot molten lava into the ocean. Check with the Park Rangers before hiking and you can also get updates on lava flows, etc. at USGS.GOV then navigate to Hawaii Volcanos Natl. Park.
Come...Share our piece of paradise and live the Hawaii dream!
Sorry but due to the fact that some future guests may be allergic, this rental is Non-Smoking!
*Unfortunately no children under 18 are allowed due to insurance restrictions because of the ponds & stream.
One of our guests did a complementary video of Heaven's Door during their stay. See the video link on this page. Click the 'Video' tab, located just above the main photo on this webpage. The video mostly focuses on the interior of the house and not so much on the unique surroundings of this tropical paradise.

Ken and I retired from our lives on California's Central Coast in 1991 to move to Hawaii. Since then we have lived on Oahu's North Shore. We are fortunate to have our children and grandchildren also living here in the islands. We are active with multiple animal and children charities and are grateful to be living in such a special place.
The Owner purchased this house in 2006
Since we live full time on Oahu's North Shore we chose Heaven's Door as a second home for ourselves. Living on the beach is wonderful but we thought a tropical hideaway just a short 40 min. flight from Oahu would be the ideal getaway. One of the best things about Heaven's Door is that it is not dependent on solar or generators and it was indeed difficult to find a country property with a stream and water features that was actually 'on the grid' with County water and electricity. The search went on for 3 years to find this unique and pristine property but it was was well worth it.
Don't get me wrong, we love our home at the beach on Oahu, but going over to the quiet town of Hilo and the serenity of Heaven's Door is truly a Hawaiian experience even for those of us who live in Hawaii year round. I can't begin to describe the peace that comes over us when we get to Heaven's Door. There are no other sounds except the wind rustling the palm trees and the birds. At night my husband likes to listen to the frogs and crickets something we don't have at the beach. This tropical paradise is our favorite local getaway even though we spend a lot of our time there fixing, fine tuning and caring for the property. We are fortunate to have a wonderful caretaker who does the gardening and cleanings for us and only lives two miles away. I encourage you to experience Heaven's Door for yourself, you won't be disappointed. Check out the guest comments from other people just like yourself. Aloha Oe', Linda and Ken Martin
Not our first vacation rental, but by far the best VRBO EVER!!! When you arrive you drive up a fairytale tree lined driveway that borders the stream. Then the real beauty and Zen of Hawaii unfolds in front of you as the driveway gives way to a beautiful clearing with a clear stream and huge pond full of brightly colored fish. Even the fish are Zen because they follow you around like they can telepathicaly communicate with you. The house is wonderful with lots easy opening windows and good screens everywhere. We stayed 4 days in August and it was wonderful weather, the high vaulted ceilings with ceiling fans in every room kept it cool and comfortable day/eve. It rained at night and we got to listen to the frogs along with intermittent rain and the stream sounds. A few showers in the morning and by 8am-9am beautiful sunshine streamed through the palm trees. It really does look like a post card, no joke. Never needed to call the owners during our stay, although Linda did call us once to check on us. The house is super clean, no bugs which surprised me since we're in a beautiful jungle. The kitchen is fully equipped although we didn't cook much here, we did enjoy the blender for fruit smoothies and the coffee grinder for our fresh Kona coffee beans. The huge king bed and sauna were my two favorite things inside the house! Who'd of thought you could enjoy a sauna in Hawaii. Linda warned us the internet was slow but I found it fine, I used it every morning and night to post to Facebook with no problems. Two nice big TV's (living room/bedroom). I must say I think they have more DVD's than Walmart, like an entire wall full seriously. Outside is just remarkable, I could babble on forever about the yard, stream, ponds, fish, birds.....Everything you expect to see when you dream about your Hawaii vacation. Even for us city people this house is easy to find, close to town with everything you could want. We picked up local plate lunchs to go while we were out during the day and enjoyed them and fruit from the Hilo Farmers Market for dinner, so we didn't have to bother to cook. My only regret was only booking part of our vacation in Hilo. We went to Kona for 3 days before coming here and then we realized that we wish we had spent all our time at this fabulous Zen location. We're already looking at coming back next year, more to see on the Hilo side, we're sure to book this beautiful property again. Thanks for sharing your little slice of Heaven.
I've visited the Hawaiian Islands many times in the past and always fall in love with the culture, the weather, the amazing views and the people. This trip we wanted something different, something enchanting that truly reveals the nature and spirit the islands have to offer.
Wow, there are simply not enough words to express the amazing beauty we enjoyed in this lovely place located in the middle of paradise. It's a short drive from the quaint town of Hilo on the Big Island, just off the main highway. As you enter the driveway approaching the home, you feel you're surrounded by the lush foliage of a botanical garden, with giant fern trees and wild ginger plants everywhere.
As you approach the spacious home on your left, your eyes gaze to the right revealing a lovely large pond and gazebo. There are huge number of Koi fish in the pond and even better, free Koi food pellets to feed to the fish. (This was one of our favorite activities.) Just to the right of the pond, there is a lovely fresh water stream that simply complements this lovely paradise.
The property is conveniently located within driving distance to numerous waterfalls, scenic parks and a famous real botanical park, if you need one.
BTW, the town of Hilo is also a gem often overlooked by many. It's rich in history, the local residents are warm and friendly. It also has one of the most beautiful parks I've ever seen with lots of freshwater lakes. What an amazing place
In short, if you're looking for a true value and want to experience the real feel of Hawaii, this is the place for you. We were absolutely thrilled and will be back again for sure!
We chose to stay at Heaven's Door because it represented a change of pace, an out-of-the-ordinary experience that makes a trip to the Big Island even more memorable, for all the right reasons.
Linda was a great host to work with. She's justifiably proud of her property and provides you with all the information you need to ensure your stay is everything you want it to be.
The house is spacious, well-appointed and comfortable. There's no A/C, but there are enough fans to cool things down and temperatures dip low enough at night that you won't break a sweat. You'll share that night with seemingly millions of coqui frogs croaking their hearts out. Amazing how you won't notice them after a while even after you've turned up the volume on the TV. You're really in a rain forest, no hype. And it'll probably rain every day you're there, but usually not for too long.
As other reviews have duly noted, this is a special property, with the koi ponds, lush vegetation, gorgeous trees and some out-of-the-ordinary neighbors. We only saw one of the feral cats once. No wild pigs or mongoose materialized, though I'm sure they weren't too far away. Not to worry. They don't want to meet you either.
We had come from four nights in Waimea, so most of our activities while at Heaven's Door were centered on Hilo (an overlooked gem of a city) and Volcano. The former is about 25 minutes away. The latter slightly over an hour. We made the round-trip to the park twice--doable for a long day trip. The house is well-positioned for exploring the Hamakua and Kohala coasts. You can be in Waimea in about an hour taking the Saddle Road.
Bear in mind the house is a decent drive to any groceries or restaurants, so best to plan accordingly and shop for provisions before you arrive. You're kind of "out there." That means Wi-Fi is slow. Instead of cable TV, there's a large DVD collection (we watched "An American in Paris." You won't miss those comforts of home. Bring a book. Fall asleep early. Dream about coming back here another time. Then wake up to another day in paradise. It's why you made the trip.
We usually vacation on Oahu, but decided to check out the big island for a change of pace. Wow, are we ever glad we did! Only 15 miles from Hilo and just off the main highway. Very easy to find. You can’t see the rental when you first enter the driveway but when you do it is breathtaking! Your own private piece of paradise surrounded by lava rock mountains. The yard is beautiful and has a good sized pond and a babbling stream for your pleasure. You can feed the koi in the pond and they will follow you begging for more as you walk around the pond. We sat out there enjoying the sun and the sound of the stream is so relaxing. There are a couple of kitty-cats that live outside here that you see from time to time. We found no “hidden dangers” as the previous review mentioned. Only peace and tranquility! I would most certainly recommend to future vacationers to spend some time during the daylight hours to enjoy the beautiful nature of this rental!
The home is beautiful inside and out. Everything we possibly needed for our comfort was available. Loved relaxing in bed and listening to the sounds of the rainforest! We had no major issues with the internet service if you wanted to be connected to the outside world to check emails. It’s not very fast but it gets the job done, but I would suggest not worrying about email and just relax and enjoy the beauty of Hawaii!!
This rental is in a great location to come home to after sightseeing around the island. The owners were very accommodating and helpful! Definitely plan to return to “Heaven’s Door” again soon!!
OH MY...what can I say that has not already been discussed in prior reviews. I stayed exactly 7 days 5-25-16 thru 6-1-16. If you want a remote location for a vacation with intermittent email and no TV well this is the place for you. I will caution that this is a RAIN FOREST so do not be fooled by its beauty as there are hidden dangers. I only say that because the spiders are HUGE and well, I got a visit from a centipede. Although I was frightened, Lindsey (the "caretaker") came to the rescue and took care of business. So you ask me if I would stay again even though nature visited me in a strange way I would say YES within a heartbeat and without hesitation or reservation. I saw momma boar and the cute babies but stayed clear of them period. The Hawk and Koi fish greeted me as I drove up to the home as well as all the feral pussycats. I belong to the 13,000 club as I went up to Mauna Kea to watch the sunset and star gaze (make sure to bring a coat); and Volcano Nat'l Park and Zip Lining were some of the highlights of the trip. It took me four hours to drive around the whole island (the scenic route) but as my mother say “Dora the Explorer” was on a mission!
Linda, well she was ever so gracious as a HOST and made sure my stay was seamless. I did enjoy watching James Bond from beginning to end so I was never bored when I came home in the evenings. Thank you for letting me be a part of the Heaven's Door Family. As Arnold would stay in true terminator fashion.....I'LL BE BACK!!! =)
(Arrival date above is incorrect - we were there in August 2014)
My husband and I were staying at Heaven's Door during Hurricane Iselle in 2014. I apologize for being so very late in writing my review. During a time of evacuation, uncertainty, and disconnection, Linda did everything possible to "take care" of us. Before the power went out, she gave me all the information I needed for emergency survival (batteries, flashlights, candles, food rations, bottled water, etc.) She promised to have someone come and check on us in the morning after the storm. It was a while before power, phone, and internet were restored. We had to walk about a mile down the highway to find a cell phone signal, but all was well. What could have been a frightening and isolated experience was made memorable by the kind attention of the owner. Still, two years later, I still check in on this site, read the reviews, and remember how well cared for we were.
Heaven's Door is everything we expected and much, much more. I hope we can return again in the next couple of years. It's okay, if there's no hurricane next time. :-)
A short 20 minute drive takes you to the famous 'Hilo Farmers Market' where you can buy an assortment of fresh local grown vegetables, tropical fruits and flowers. Volcano's National Park is a must see for anyone visiting. With only a $10.00 park entry fee per vehicle it's one of the best bargains on the island. Be sure and walk through the 'Thurston Lava Tube' while you're there. There are two Botanical Gardens within a few minutes of this property as well as two different Zip-Line adventures. If you want to explore all of the diversity of the Hilo side of the Big Island this is the ideal central location to start your adventure from every day. Waterfalls, zip lines, botanical gardens, volcano, hiking and much more.
