Overview

About the property

Private House & Exclusive 2 Acre Property - 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

*Due to restrictions imposed by our insurance company, (ponds and stream), we cannot rent this property to anyone with children under the age of 18.

To our potential guests we say.....'Noho Ka Moe'uhane' or 'Live the dream'...If you are coming to the Hilo side of the Big Island to see waterfalls and experience the magnificent beauty of Hawaii's tropical wonders then this completely private and romantic property is for you. Don't settle for a B&B and/or sharing a home with owners or other guests on the same property. This gated 2 acre property is 100% private...Just you and nature. Save the beach experience for Maui, Kauai or Oahu. With a year round stream, small private lake teaming with fish and a second koi pond right outside your bedroom window this is the tropical Hawaii you only see in movies; unspoiled and totally private, just you and the sights, sounds and smells of a lush green tropical paradise. This home is located in one of the most pristine tropical areas on the Big Island called the 'Gold Coast' a short drive from Downtown Hilo and only two minutes off the main highway) 19. Passing through the gates, you drive along a private 425 foot long driveway surrounded by giant tree ferns, 100 ft. tall palms, wild mango and avocado trees and a beautiful year round spring fed stream. Come...Live Your Dream...Live Aloha (To Read More; click MORE DETAILS)

Heaven's Door has a lovely, 2/bedroom, 2/bath cedar home on it. It is the perfect romantic location for people who want to get away from it all. Fall asleep to the ramble of the stream running over the boulders and the sounds of the tropical jungle at night then wake to native Hawaiian birds singing and flitting from tree to tree in a stunning tropical forest. Heaven's Door is also very comfortable with 2 couples who want to enjoy the unique sights and sounds of a true jungle paradise.

Build a romantic fire in the fireplace or enjoy the private indoor cedar sauna (best with two but comfortable with four). The large master bedroom welcomes you with a comfy Pillow Top King size 'Perfect Sleeper' and in-suite master bath. Both bathrooms have full size tubs and showers. The second bedroom offers you a Queen Size pillow-top bed with a view of the lower pond and the sounds of 'liquid chatter' as the stream rambles by all year round. There is also a 'full size stacked' washer/dryer combo located inside the master bath suite. The master bedroom has a second koi pond just outside the large picture window where you can watch the koi. There is a beautiful year round stream that runs completely along the perimeter of the property it feeds a 79,000 gallon small lake, teaming with fish, both HUGE 30 year old Koi and GIANT Talapia, just outside the front door. You can feed the fish if you like, they do have two automatic fish feeders that dispense food to them twice daily but they always enjoy an extra treat from our guests. There is also an outdoor shower (cold only) for those who like to enjoy nature at its best.

Just outside your living room windows, across the pond there is a weeping wall, constantly running water down its rough lava face. These unique natural water features are often called 'Pele's Tears'. It is said of 'weeping walls' that 'Pele' the Hawaiian Fire Goddess who created the 'aina' (the land) is weeping for her children (the islands). We often see a beautiful and rare Hawaiian Hawk the 'Io (Pronounced...'Eo). She likes to come in the mornings and hunt crayfish out of the stream. Watch her from your morning breakfast table as she perches on one of the large stream boulders and enjoys her catch. There are only an estimated 1400-2100 of these beautiful birds of prey left in the Hawaiian Islands, most of those are here on the Big Island.

This lovely private property invites you to become 'one with the aina' (the land). The entire 2+ acres is it's own secluded valley and offers you absolute privacy. It cannot be seen by any other house and has only one private gated access. This vacation rental gives you the ultimate get away from it all experience without driving out to the middle of nowhere. NO 4-WD vehicle necessary. Although this is a tropical rainforest property we are NOT 'off the grid' like most similar water feature properties are. This house has Hawaii County Water and Electricity, we are NOT dependent on solar panels, generators or catchment water as many stream and water feature properties are. Unfortunately there is no cable TV offered in this area but we do have an extensive collection (over 300 titles) of DVD's including many boxed HBO and TV Series. We offer free Wi-Fi internet access via Verizon Modem and Cradlepoint Wi-Fi router. Internet service is reliable but depends on a cellular connection and can be rather slow by todays standards. Probably not capable of streaming video or movies, but OK for checking your emails or Facebook. Remember....You're on vacation:) You may find cheaper or more expensive rentals but there's only one "Heaven's Door"

Location...Location....Location...."Heaven's Door" is very centrally located to all your sightseeing needs. The Hilo side of the Big Island is truly unique and offers unparalleled sightseeing. This property is close to numerous waterfalls; Umauma Falls & two different zip line adventures, are all a short 3 min. drive away, Kolekole Park (5 min.), Akaka and Kahuna Falls (10 min.), Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots (25 min) and beautiful Onomea Bay as well as Onomea Botanical Gardens (10 min.) and only 20 minutes from the quaint historical Hilo Town. Pick up local fresh fruits and vegetables at the wonderful Hilo farmers market Wed. & Sat. are their big days but there are always a few vendors during the the rest of the week.

Take a drive up to Volcano's National Park and experience Madam Pele (Hawaiian Goddess of Fire) up close and personal. Hike out to where the 'Aina' (land) is being born as Kiluea flows hot molten lava into the ocean. Check with the Park Rangers before hiking and you can also get updates on lava flows, etc. at USGS.GOV then navigate to Hawaii Volcanos Natl. Park.

*Disclosure: This property; as with almost every property on the Hilo side of the Big Island has Coqui frogs. They are a small tree frog not native to Hawaii. Nothing to do with or stream or ponds they are a tree frog , Coqui frogs chip at night, if you are a light sleeper you may not want to stay anywhere on the Hilo side, except at higher (colder) elevations or bring ear plugs to any rental you choose. Many owners and property managers will not disclose this up front. Most people find the Coqui's "part of the experience", some people just don't like them.....Unfortunately, they are just part of the Big Island these days, especially the Hilo side.

Come...Share our piece of paradise and live the Hawaii dream!

NOTE: The new VRBO pin/mapping system does not work well with many Hawaii rentals. This beautiful property is located 14 miles N. of downtown Hilo a short 20 min. drive on Hwy. 19. The VRBO map it shows it in "downtown Hilo" ???

Please note this rental is Non-Smoking!

About The Owner

Ken and I retired from our lives on California's Central Coast in 1991 to move to Hawaii. Since then we have lived on Oahu's North Shore. We are fortunate to have our children and grandchildren also living here in the islands. We are active with multiple animal and children charities and are grateful to be living in such a special place.

The Owner purchased this house in 2006

Why The Owner chose Hilo

Since we live full time on Oahu's North Shore we chose Heaven's Door as a second home for ourselves. Living on the beach is wonderful but we thought a tropical hideaway just a short 40 min. flight from Oahu would be the ideal getaway. One of the best things about Heaven's Door is that it is not dependent on solar or generators and it was indeed difficult to find a country property with a stream and water features that was actually 'on the grid' with County water and electricity. The search went on for 3 years to find this unique and pristine property but it was was well worth it.

What makes this house unique

Don't get me wrong, we love our home at the beach on Oahu, but going over to the quiet town of Hilo and the serenity of Heaven's Door is truly a Hawaiian experience even for those of us who live in Hawaii year round. I can't begin to describe the peace that comes over us when we get to Heaven's Door. There are no other sounds except the wind rustling the palm trees and the birds. At night my husband likes to listen to the frogs and crickets something we don't have at the beach. This tropical paradise is our favorite local getaway even though we spend a lot of our time there fixing, fine tuning and caring for the property. We are fortunate to have a wonderful caretaker who does the gardening and cleanings for us and only lives two miles away. I encourage you to experience Heaven's Door for yourself, you won't be disappointed. Check out the guest comments from other people just like yourself. Aloha Oe', Linda and Ken Martin

Jungle Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful property and was a fun, unique experience for us to stay. The driveway alone is enough to make it memorable. Think Indiana Jones / Jurassic Park. The location is a wonderful combination of "off the beaten path" and still close to "civilization". The home was furnished with everything needed to enjoy our time. It was a little chilly in the early mornings, but blankets were available (and the sauna!). Wireless was adequate for checking emails & texting. Anything else can and should wait! And to top it off, I was thrilled to see the Bond 50 blu-ray collection (although we only watched about 20 minutes of one Bond movie). Too much else to do.

We could not believe how lush and tropical the grounds are at Heaven's Door! The grounds are supreme (and private). Lots of birds, frogs and other animals. There is a beautiful stream running through the property that I enjoyed boulder hopping down. The pond fish were fun to watch, especially the predator fish. Once I found him, he kept an eye on me at all times! This is a beautiful, beautiful place. Location is excellent to explore the Hamakua Coast - so many wonderful drives and places to see.

Communication with Linda was excellent and having stayed at another of her properties, we know that she has an eye for exceptional locations. Staying at Heaven's Door will be one of the enduring experiences of our Big Island vacation. Thank you (and we hope you get feeling better soon, Linda :)

Owner's Response: Aloha I'm glad that you've got to experience two of our unique rental properties now. What a wonderful review, I think you covered everything. I love the part about Indiana Jones meets Jurassic Park and the predator fish that keeps an eye on you. Indeed he does, you are the only thing in his world that's bigger than him:) Heaven's Door does have an "Exceptional Location", since it is off the beaten path and still close to civilization (a short 20 min. drive to downtown Hilo); believe me those types of properties are hard to find:) I look forward to seeing you on a future trip to Hawaii and thank you for the well wishes for my health. Truly tropical

  • 3 of 5

Totally secluded and tropical, real taste of Hawaii. House is very well equipped and clean, would recommend to others. Only negative is away from town and noisy due to frogs. But real great experience of nature. The table can help led nullify some of the noise.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We're glad you found the house to your liking and that you would recommend it to others. The Coqui frogs at night are not what most people from the Mainland, US are used to. It is indeed unfortunate that they have taken over the entire Hilo side of the Big Island in the past few years:( We do disclose info on our webpage regarding the frogs as well as the fact that the VRBO mapping is not correct. We hope potential guests read some of our 73 other 5-Star reviews: Mahalo, Linda

Truly Heaven's Door!

  • 5 of 5

It was an amazing out of the world experience living in this house inside a rainforest. You fall asleep to the beautiful sounds of the birds and insects at night. The house has a cool breeze and feels extra amazing when it is raining outside. Wifi is weak, but you don't need access to internet when you are living in such a gorgeous and unique space! You will need to focus your attention on taking it in. Amenities are good, the water pressure is great, and Linda is a great communicator and easy to get a hold of if you need anything! Highly recommend. This was my best vacation rental experience yet.

Owner's Response: Aloha Wen: Thank you for your wonderful 5-Star review. We never get tired of hearing guests describe their stay.... "An amazing out of this world experience". We're glad you found it was "Truly Heaven's Door". Also, thank you for your kind words about myself, I try hard to assist all our guests with any needs they may require both before and during their stay. Mahalo, Linda Martin

Jungle Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We loved our 3-night stay at Heaven's Door. We were surrounded by a luscious tropical rain forest seemingly miles from other civilization (but not really--there are houses and farms fairly close by). The house was clean and had everything you could imagine for a short stay. This is the place to go if you want to get away from it all.

PROS:

1. Clean and efficient

2. Koi pond and bird life

3. Two bathrooms

CONS:

1. Stairs from parking to house--not a problem for us, but might be for some.

2. Fifteen or 20 minutes from restaurants/stores. (This is actually part of its charm, but for some, it might pose a problem.)

3. A little cooler than you might expect (especially in October). There is a fireplace, however.

One extra note: the tree frogs (Coqui) are constant at night. This is a jungle after all. I found them soothing in a white-noise kind of way and missed them after leaving. Others may want to bring ear plugs.

This house is not for everyone, but if you like isolation and peace and quiet but still be within a half-hour's drive to the city, then this is your place.

Owner's Response: Aloha and thank you Paul for your 5-Star review of Heaven's Door. We're happy you "loved your 3-night stay:" Glad you found the Coqui Frogs "soothing" and enjoyed their nightly ritual. Please feel free to take as many of them home with you as you would like, I'm sure that the Big Island agricultural authorities would be happy to mail you a big box of them:) Again, thanks for taking the time to write a review, as you know they are important to potential guests. Our Rainforest Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

I have to say I was really impressed that this property is exactly as advertised. It is absolutely private, I don’t know how many acres it is but it has locked gates and once you arrive it’s just you, the fish, frogs and birds. Nobody can see or hear you, as advertised on VRBO “100% Private”. Last year we stayed in Hilo at a “rainforest rental” and found that our cottage shared the property with another vacation rental. That went really bad since we had no privacy and the other neighbors were very loud and always coming home late.

This property has a beautiful pond and the stream is absolutely clear and pristine. The house is perched just high enough so you can look out on this amazing rainforest. The home is well kept, very clean and has a well supplied kitchen, even has baking pans. I love to bake and found some interesting fruits to add to my cookies at the Hilo Farmers Market. My husband found the internet to be slower than ours at home, but better than described on the owners webpage. We loved the cat that comes to the back door everyday (the owners provide dry food for her). She’s pretty wild but seems interested in people. We saw the crazy big fishing bird that comes every morning and waits for the fish feeder to go off. Never saw him catch anything but that’s probably because the fish weigh more than he does. He has high hopes though. The Coqui frogs are everywhere now on the Big Island they sing at night but we love nature and they’re just part of it.

We couldn’t have found a more perfect place for our Hilo trip this time. Heaven’s Door was everything we expected. We’ve pretty much done all the tourist stuff on previous trips so I enjoyed just sitting in the “Japanese Tea House” out by the pond reading and listening to nature. I would get up every morning and do my Yoga out on the front deck and watch the birds taking baths in the large leaves that caught rain in them overnight. We had beautiful weather, only rained at night. Heaven’s Door is truly a remarkable place, I think we’ve found our home away from home.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful review. I'm glad that you agree that Heaven's Door is 100% private and appears "exactly as advertised". I really try hard to be truthful in our advertising and it seems to pay off. We have so many return guests and new guests that want to come back again and again. I'm happy you both enjoyed the sounds of the rainforest at night as well as the crazy coming and goings during the day. The fishing bird you saw is a Night Heron although he fishes during the day. We call him Waldo since he thinks he hides well but in reality he sticks out like he's wearing an orange hunting vest. I will pass onto the cleaner that you were very happy with how well she keeps the rental, I know she tries hard, as do we to make it wonderful for you. Glad you took some private time on this trip to just kick back and enjoy the peace and serenity that is Heaven's Door. Mahalo, Linda Martin

Super Loud Coqui Frogs

  • 3 of 5

The house is everything the owner says it is - alas, this tiny canyon (and all of the Big Island) has now been invaded by Coqui Frogs which are super loud at night. While it is blissful there during the day, from 6pm-6am, the frogs take over, probably due to the ponds (one pond is right below bedroom window) and river and narrow canyon. We had to close the windows AND use earplugs, and could still hear the frogs! So if you're sensitive to noise, and you like to sleep at night, this is not the place for you. (FYI: we also stayed one week on Kona side above City of Refuge; and while we did hear some frogs at night, we could leave windows open and no earplugs. I presume no water areas and wide open space helped to have the noise dissipate.) -- Anyway, I think this fact needs to be disclosed to potential tenants. I stayed here 5 years ago, and it was wonderful. What a bad surprise this time!

And somebody mentioned the TV: yes, you have to turn the TV on as loud as possible in order to hear anything from the TV, that's how loud the frogs are!!!

The government btw knows it has a big problem on the island with the coquis and is trying to address the issue; 2 different ways to get rid of them have been tried, we were told; alas, no success so far.

It is not much fun to deal with the gate and lock to get in and out of the property. In the pouring rain, it really is no fun since holding an umbrella is impossible while hassling with the lock, chain and gates. Maybe install an automatic gate opener?

If you are observing the speed limit (or slightly above), it is 25 minutes to Hilo and should be changed on the map. Maybe use the nearby post office address? People do rely on the maps when they are looking for a place.

Other than that, it is a wonderful place!

Owner's Response: Indeed as our "Disclosure" on our webpage says if you are a sensitive sleeper DO NOT choose this property... Do not choose ANY property on the Hilo side of the Big Island, every property has Coqui Frogs, except at higher elevation where it's too cold. Also they are a tree frog and not a water frog so the ponds and stream are irrelevant to them. There are less Coqui's on the Kona side because it is dry and baron of the vegetation they need. This guest stayed before, there were Coqui's during that stay but some nights the Coqui's are louder than others, they LOVE rain and unfortunately this guests short stay and arrival was during one of Hawaii's worst thunder storms in years, so I guess you could say "The Crowd Went Wild"! She got the entire London Philharmonic Coqui Orchestra, not the usual Coqui Junior High School marching band. If you're a frog lover, book it now we fill up fast, if you're still on the fence then please read on, so many guests love the frogs and that's one of the things they come to experience, sights and sounds of a true tropical rainforest. As for the gate lock it's a simple 4-digit line up the number lock. We tried automatic solar powered gate openers, the jungle canopy does not allow enough sunlight for them to operate. The driveway is 425 ft. long a little far for an extension cord; therefore electric gates are not an option. We want our guests to be happy, so in the interest of full disclosure remember; it's a rainforest so sooner or later you will get wet. Let's be serious, if you want to experience a pristine rainforest at its best, then book Heaven's Door, 70 reviewers gave it 5-Stars and will attest it's fantastic, a true rainforest experience. If you want to experience the rainforest but do not want to get wet or listen to the sounds of the jungle then you may NOT want to stay on the Hilo side of the Big Island period. Mahalo, Linda Martin
