Heaven's Door; Your Hawaii Dream Awaits. 100% Private Home (Stream, Lake, Koi)

Bedrooms 2
Property type house

About the property

Private House & Exclusive 2 Acre Property - 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

*Due to restrictions imposed by our insurance company, (ponds and stream), we cannot rent this property to anyone with children under the age of 18.

To our potential guests we say.....'Noho Ka Moe'uhane' or 'Live the dream'...If you are coming to the Hilo side of the Big Island to see waterfalls and experience the magnificent beauty of Hawaii's tropical wonders then this completely private and romantic property is for you. Don't settle for a B&B, sharing a home, or a water feature property with multiple houses on it. This gated 2 acre property is 100% private...Just you and nature. With a year round stream, small private lake teaming with fish (their pets not dinner:) and a second koi pond right outside your bedroom window this is the tropical Hawaii you only see in movies; unspoiled and 2 acres that are totally private and cannot be seen by any other house, just you and the sights, sounds and smells of a lush green tropical paradise. This home is located in the "District of North Hilo" one of the most pristine tropical areas on the Big Island called the 'Gold Coast' a short drive from Downtown. (FYI: VRBO mapping, Google Earth & GPS's are often incorrect in the islands.) Passing through the gates, you drive along a private 425 foot long driveway surrounded by giant tree ferns, 100 ft. tall palms, wild mango and avocado trees and a beautiful year round spring fed stream. Mangos, guava's and avocados often fall from huge trees on the hill and are delivered directly to the entry gates for your convenience. Come...Live Your Dream...Live Aloha (For specific details please; click MORE DETAILS)

Heaven's Door has a lovely, 2/bedroom, 2/bath cedar home on it. It is the perfect romantic location for people who want to get away from it all however, it is also very comfortable with 2 couples who want to enjoy the unique sights and sounds of a true jungle paradise. Fall asleep to the ramble of the stream running over the boulders and the sounds of the tropical jungle at night then wake to native Hawaiian birds singing and flitting from tree to tree in a stunning tropical forest. Non need to close the blinds nobody can see in but you can awake to a pristine jungle view.

Build a romantic fire in the fireplace or enjoy the private indoor cedar sauna (best with two but comfortable with four). The large master bedroom welcomes you with a comfy Pillow Top King size 'Perfect Sleeper' and in-suite master bath. Both bathrooms have full size tubs and showers. The second bedroom offers you a Queen Size pillow-top bed with a view of the lower pond and the sounds of 'liquid chatter' as the stream rambles by. There is also a 'full size stacked' washer/dryer combo located inside the master bath suite. The master bedroom has a second koi pond just outside the large picture window where you can watch the koi. There is a beautiful year round stream that runs completely along the perimeter of the property, it feeds a 79,000 gallon small lake, teaming with fish, both HUGE 30 year old Koi and GIANT Talapia, just outside the front door. You can feed the fish if you like, they do have two automatic fish feeders that dispense food to them twice daily but they always enjoy an extra treat from our guests. There is also an outdoor shower (cold only) for those who like to enjoy nature at its best, clothing optional:)

Just outside your living room windows, across the pond there is a weeping wall, constantly running water down its rough lava face. These unique natural water features are often called 'Pele's Tears'. It is said of 'weeping walls' that 'Pele' the Hawaiian Fire Goddess who created the 'aina' (the land) is weeping for her children (the islands). We often see a beautiful and rare Hawaiian Hawk the 'Io (Pronounced...'Eo). She likes to come in the mornings and hunt crayfish out of the stream. Watch her from your morning breakfast table as she perches on one of the large stream boulders and enjoys her catch. There are only an estimated 1400-2100 of these beautiful birds of prey left in the Hawaiian Islands, most of those are on the Big Island.

This lovely private property invites you to become 'one with the aina' (the land). The entire 2+ acres is it's own secluded valley and offers you absolute privacy. It cannot be seen by any other house and has only one private gated (locked) access. This vacation rental gives you the ultimate get away from it all experience without driving out to the middle of nowhere, 30 min. from Hilo airport. NO 4-WD vehicle necessary. Although this is a tropical rainforest property we are NOT 'off the grid. This house has Hawaii County Water and Electricity, we are NOT dependent on solar panels, generators or catchment water as many stream and water feature properties are. Unfortunately there is no cable TV offered in this area but we do have an extensive collection (over 500 titles) of DVD's including many boxed HBO and TV Series. We offer free Wi-Fi internet access via Verizon Modem and Cradlepoint Wi-Fi router. Internet service is reliable but depends on a cellular connection and can be rather slow by todays standards. Not capable of streaming video or movies, but OK for checking your emails or Facebook. Remember....You're on vacation:) You may find cheaper rentals (often shared properties) or more expensive rentals (downtown Hilo but surrounded by other houses) but there's only one truly 100% private "Heaven's Door"

"Heaven's Door" is very centrally located to all your sightseeing needs. The Hilo side of the Big Island is truly unique and offers unparalleled sightseeing. This property is close to numerous waterfalls; Umauma Falls & two different zip line adventures, are all a short 3-5 min. drive away, Kolekole Park (5 min.), Akaka and Kahuna Falls (10 min.), Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots (25 min) and beautiful Onomea Bay as well as Onomea Botanical Gardens (10 min.), 20 minutes from the quaint historical Hilo Town and it's wonderful Hilo farmers market Wed. & Sat. are their big days but there are always a few vendors during the the rest of the week.

Take a drive up to Volcano's National Park and experience Madam Pele (Hawaiian Goddess of Fire) up close and personal. Hike out to where the 'Aina' (land) is being born as Kiluea flows hot molten lava into the ocean. Check with the Park Rangers before hiking and you can also get updates on lava flows, etc. at USGS.GOV then navigate to Hawaii Volcanos Natl. Park.

*Disclosure: Many owners and property managers will not disclose this up front or even mention the Coqui frogs but we believe in total honesty with our guests. All properties on the Hilo side of the Big Island have Coqui frogs. Unfortunately, they are just part of the entire Big Island these days, especially the Hilo side, they are even in the high rent $400-$600 per/nt vacation rentals. Coqui's are a small tree frog not native to Hawaii. Nothing to do with streams or ponds, they are a tree frog native to Puerto Rico where they have snakes that eat these frogs. Hawaii being snake free provided a perfect predator free environment for these very small creatures. Coqui's are on the Kona side as well, likely fewer because it is very dry and baron of the vegetation they prefer. Coqui frogs "chip" at night, if you are a light sleeper you may not want to stay anywhere on the Big Island especially the Hilo side, except at higher, colder elevation (below 50°) or bring ear plugs to any rental you choose. The majority of people find the Coqui's, "charming", "part of the experience", "love the rainforest song" and many other positive descriptions from our reviews. Then there are some people who just don't like them or any noises at night, remember the rainforest is alive day and night, it's spectacular. So....Come...Share our piece of paradise and live the Hawaii dream!

NOTE: The new VRBO pin/mapping system does not work well with many Hawaii rentals. This beautiful property is located in District of North Hilo, 14 miles N. of downtown Hilo a short 20 min. drive on Hwy. 19. Sorry, the VRBO map it shows it in "downtown Hilo" ???

Please note this rental is Non-Smoking!

About The Owner

Ken and I retired from our lives on California's Central Coast in 1991 to move to Hawaii. Since then we have lived on Oahu's North Shore. We are fortunate to have our children and grandchildren also living here in the islands. We are active with multiple animal and children charities and are grateful to be living in such a special place.

The Owner purchased this house in 2006

Why The Owner chose Hilo

Since we live full time on Oahu's North Shore we chose Heaven's Door as a second home for ourselves. Living on the beach is wonderful but we thought a tropical hideaway just a short 40 min. flight from Oahu would be the ideal getaway. One of the best things about Heaven's Door is that it is not dependent on solar or generators and it was indeed difficult to find a country property with a stream and water features that was actually 'on the grid' with County water and electricity. The search went on for 3 years to find this unique and pristine property but it was was well worth it.

What makes this house unique

Don't get me wrong, we love our home at the beach on Oahu, but going over to the quiet town of Hilo and the serenity of Heaven's Door is truly a Hawaiian experience even for those of us who live in Hawaii year round. I can't begin to describe the peace that comes over us when we get to Heaven's Door. There are no other sounds except the wind rustling the palm trees and the birds. At night my husband likes to listen to the frogs and crickets something we don't have at the beach. This tropical paradise is our favorite local getaway even though we spend a lot of our time there fixing, fine tuning and caring for the property. We are fortunate to have a wonderful caretaker who does the gardening and cleanings for us and only lives two miles away. I encourage you to experience Heaven's Door for yourself, you won't be disappointed. Check out the guest comments from other people just like yourself. Aloha Oe', Linda and Ken Martin

Jungle Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful property and was a fun, unique experience for us to stay. The driveway alone is enough to make it memorable. Think Indiana Jones / Jurassic Park. The location is a wonderful combination of "off the beaten path" and still close to "civilization". The home was furnished with everything needed to enjoy our time. It was a little chilly in the early mornings, but blankets were available (and the sauna!). Wireless was adequate for checking emails & texting. Anything else can and should wait! And to top it off, I was thrilled to see the Bond 50 blu-ray collection (although we only watched about 20 minutes of one Bond movie). Too much else to do.

We could not believe how lush and tropical the grounds are at Heaven's Door! The grounds are supreme (and private). Lots of birds, frogs and other animals. There is a beautiful stream running through the property that I enjoyed boulder hopping down. The pond fish were fun to watch, especially the predator fish. Once I found him, he kept an eye on me at all times! This is a beautiful, beautiful place. Location is excellent to explore the Hamakua Coast - so many wonderful drives and places to see.

Communication with Linda was excellent and having stayed at another of her properties, we know that she has an eye for exceptional locations. Staying at Heaven's Door will be one of the enduring experiences of our Big Island vacation. Thank you (and we hope you get feeling better soon, Linda :)

Owner's Response: Aloha I'm glad that you've got to experience two of our unique rental properties now. What a wonderful review, I think you covered everything. I love the part about Indiana Jones meets Jurassic Park and the predator fish that keeps an eye on you. Indeed he does, you are the only thing in his world that's bigger than him:) Heaven's Door does have an "Exceptional Location", since it is off the beaten path and still close to civilization (a short 20 min. drive to downtown Hilo); believe me those types of properties are hard to find:) I look forward to seeing you on a future trip to Hawaii and thank you for the well wishes for my health. Mahalo and Aloha Oe....Linda and Ken

It felt as if we literally found "Heaven's Door"

  • 5 of 5

My fiancé and I recently stayed at Heaven's Door. It was the most incredibly beautiful, peaceful and quaint get away we have ever had. Amazing energy and surrounded by the gorgeous natural Hawaiian landscape. The home was very clean, well-maintained and more than accommodating. It was exactly as amazing as the manager described, but really, we can't express in words the incredible feeling we experienced during our stay at Heaven's Door. I guess the best word to describe our stay would be magical.

We did a lot of site seeing and driving around to the major must see place on the Big Island. Hilo Farmer's Market is a must! Great art, food, jewelry and much more, only to be seen and found at the farmer's market.

We would Highly recommend to all our family and friends; if you are going to the Big Island you must stay at Heaven's Door.

A VERY Special Mahalo Nui to the owners, who are so incredibly generous and kind. They are the definition of Aloha; and so much Aloha to be found on Big Island.

lovely private place

  • 4 of 5

the house is well-appointed (particularly the kitchen) and the grounds are lush and green. There are rain forest sounds (frogs, birds) but we found them soothing and interesting rather than loud or intrusive. if you want REALLY fresh fish for lunch or dinner, visit Papaloa store and cafe (mile marker 24) for take out or eat in (the cafe opens at 1). And they have fabulous dessert (eclairs! cookies! and more) made by a talented pastry chef!

Owner's Response: Aloha Darleen. Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions. We're glad you enjoyed your week at Heaven's Door and found the rainforest song "soothing and interesting" indeed it is something that very few people get to experience in their lifetime. I look forward to trying the Papaloa store and cafe, they have been remodeling it for quite sometime and we've never checked it out since it reopened. Mahalo, Linda Martin

Truly tropical experience

  • 5 of 5

First of all, I have to say Linda is very helpful and gave excellent suggestions of things to do around Hilo side. If she don’t call us and told us to bring rain coat, we will be in trouble.

The place is truly tropical. Surrounded by tall green trees and stream. I love feeding the fishes and seeing a bird waiting to catch a fish is something you don’t see everyday. I don’t really pay much attention to the internet because just like the owner said “You are on vacation” I really like the extensive collections of DVD even though I don’t have time to watch any of it during the stay. The house can be cold at night. May be because we come from hot and humid place. It was solved by small heater from Walmart. Amenities are all good and master bed is really comfy. You will hear all sort of singing voices by various animals at night but for us it’s a very pleasant experience. Be careful if you have heavy luggage like us because the stairs can be long. The house is well lit at night for pathway and stairs. Bring small LED flash lights because you may have to open the gate at night and it’s helpful at night. Be sure to bring some mosquito repellent too because they are waiting for you when you get down to open the gate. For us, those things are not a big deal but if you never been to places like this, just be aware those. The one thing we will really miss about big island in general is its tasty papaya. Eating those in the morning while looking at the fishes in the pond will be missed.

Owner's Response: Alloha Wai: Thank you for your 5-Star review and your kind words about me. Sorry it was indeed chilly the days that you stayed, a cold front made it's way through all the Hawaiian Islands that week. Although as you say many people don't think 65°-66° at night is cold:) Unfortunately I guess some guest took the flashlight we keep in the tube on the gate, it happens, but I always use the headlights. Just to be clear the "mosquitos at the gates" that you refer to are not mosquitos at all, often people make that mistake, they are swarms of "fruit gnats", there is a mango tree there and the fruit falls by the gates. Usually people don't stick around long enough to realize the swarm is fruit gnats and not mosquitos:) Our fish will miss you:) Thank you for your stay. Linda Martin

Heavenly Forest

  • 5 of 5

What a Heavenly experience we had at this rental. I live on Oahu now and forgot how beautiful the Hilo side of the Big Island could be. I looked at some rentals right in downtown Hilo, there were a few with similar stream like properties but they were super expensive, double the cost of this property. The house is super clean, it's more modern than most of the old Hilo houses. It was nice the owners supply, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner for people like us who come from outer island with just a carry-on for a couple of days it's great to not have to check a bag or buy stuff you don't need. Love the ponds, stream and all the fish and birds. The Coqui frogs didn't bother us, just more rainforest creatures, but it's really sad they're all over the Big Island because they're a very invasive species, I hope they don't ever make it over to Oahu. We would come back more often except the cost of Inter-Island air with Hawaii is ridiculous now:( This is a fantastic place, I would highly recommend it and we will be back eventually. Pat K. Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful 5-star review. I agree that the cost of Inter-Island airfare with Hawaiian Air could be much less, more like commuter flights in the Mainland. We're glad that you did make it back to Hilo and are very happy that you enjoyed Heaven's Door. We hope that you will be able to come back perhaps when Hawaiian Air is running a special. Truly tropical

  • 3 of 5

Totally secluded and tropical, real taste of Hawaii. House is very well equipped and clean, would recommend to others. Only negative is away from town and noisy due to frogs. But real great experience of nature. The table can help led nullify some of the noise.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We're glad you found the house to your liking and that you would recommend it to others. The Coqui frogs at night are not what most people from the Mainland, US are used to. It is indeed unfortunate that they have taken over the entire Hilo side of the Big Island in the past few years:( We do disclose info on our webpage regarding the frogs as well as the fact that the VRBO mapping is not correct. We hope potential guests read some of our 73 other 5-Star reviews: Mahalo, Linda
