Unique, Impressive and Convenient

  • 4 of 5

This beautiful rental home has been our Girls Week-end destination for two years in a row now. The Lake view is awesome. The patio with the gas fire pit in the middle, is welcoming and warm on those cooler nights. The location is within 4 miles of a major grocery store. The inside is very nicely decorated and had board games and movies galore for inside entertainment. The grounds are beautiful as well. Whether in the front or back of the home, there was spacious areas for gathering (and following the sun.) The beach area is a little small, but very quaint and private. We had a very enjoyable stay that was filled with fun, relaxation and memories.

Overall a nice stay

  • 4 of 5

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The house was bigger than expected, over 5,000 sq ft for the family to spread out. Mind you, despite the substantial size there still are still only three actual bedrooms with doors. There are two other sleeping areas, off the master bedroom, lofted up from the main living area. While these spaces may be fine for kids, they may not offer enough privacy (or insulation from sound in the rest of the house) for most adults. The lower area has a private apartment, complete with kitchen & separate entrance. This secluded space was perfect for a sleeping baby & quiet time away!

The yard is great, set back from the street, no worries about kids going into the road. There were many steps down to the beach & we were there for days & not once did we ever run into anyone else on the beach (besides our other family who was staying at the rental house next door). It was great - right next door, through some tall grass, is another rental house (different owners). It was perfect for our family reunion to be able to have the two houses next door to each other, kids running back and forth between them.

The owner was very friendly and helpful prior to our visit, giving us restaurant ideas, etc. We did get most of our security deposit back but did get two deductions we weren't thrilled about. First, as we were leaving one of the adults spilled a beverage on the carpet (mind you, the entire house is all carpeted in an off-white very light carpet, not exactly practical for a rental). My aunt (mother of three & professional stain remover) spent a lot of time getting the stain out & it appeared to be gone, simply still damp from being cleaned. Well, we got one ding in the security deposit for that- I'm not sure what else really needed to be done besides simply letting it dry. The second deduction came because my Mom (staying next door) realized a serving platter of hers had been left at the Dome House. This was about an hour or so after check-out from the Dome House. She called the owner to make sure it was okay (yes) to stop by the Dome House for the platter. The housekeeper was already there cleaning, Mom said hi, took her platter and left. Then we got a ding on the security deposit for the housekeeper's time to find the platter!? Overall, we enjoyed our time here. However, when spending hundreds or thousands to rent a place it doesn't really feel good to get nickel and dimed on your way out the door.

Dome Home

This house worked out great for us. There were eight of us and the 3 bedrooms with an upstairs general sleeping area kept everyone happy. Great view from the deck of the Lake.

Renters Beware

  • 3 of 5

In the many pages of information, do's and don'ts, the owners stated that they would be calling to see how the vacation was going. We never heard from them.

Upon our arrival we found

• Many spots on the white carpet

• White dog hair and sand on both of the red sofas

• Stained sheets and towels in the upper level bedroom and bathroom

• Streaky, chalky looking bathtub in upper level bathroom

• Mildew stained shower curtain in lower level bathroom

• Broken knob on toaster

• Dried dog dirt in the yard (that we cleaned up)

• Dirty grill

• Cobwebs and dead bugs everywhere

The above conditions should not be present in a premium rental. While the house was spacious and unusual our overall experience was marred by the above.

We were surprised to have a portion of our security deposit withheld because of some minor items that were not due to our rental. When we complained to the owner about this withholding we never received a response.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, Dennis was not completely satified with his stay at our home. We pride ourselves on the cleanliness and maintainance of our home and property. Dennis and his family most certainly had some mishaps that resulted in the loss of a portion of their damage deposit. It was quite unfortunate. On rare occasions we have to withhold portions to cover excessive messes or broken or missing items. Having 6 kids of our own, we know accidents happens. Luckily, we have had many, many wonderful renters over the years! Many of whom come back year after year! We make certain that every renter knows that our home is a LAKE HOUSE. When you live on a lake, you deal with bugs, cobwebs, etc. We are blessed with a fantastic housekeeper who not only cleans when renters leave, but also comes out the day that each renter arrives, to ensure everything is perfect. We do try to check in with each renter during their stay but often have a difficult time reaching anyone as they are enjoying the great outdoors! We certainly make sure that our renters have our phone numbers and that we are available at any time, should they have any issues or questions during their stay. Our goal is that EVERY renter enters our home in awe of the unique architecture and beauty, is comfortable and relaxed while there, and leaves with wonderful memories of time spent with family and friends!
