Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Aloha! Come to Kapoho Bay, a snorkeler’s delight, where the sun shines and the trade winds blow, located in the SE corner of the Big Island, a short 35-minute drive from the Hilo airport. #Kapoho #pahoa

Slip into Island Time as lush tropical colors, walls of windows, and Asian-inspired decor surround you with a sense of serenity. The sounds of the ocean can be heard throughout. Your home away from home sleeps up to 8 people; there are two private bedrooms, one located on each of two levels; the rec room has futon couches which convert into two additional beds; plus a Pack’n’Play for the keiki (little ones). Each floor has a bathroom. This is an ideal set-up for 2-3 couples, a family with children, or just a romantic get-away for the two of you. There is a full-size living room with satellite TV, a dining room, and a spacious chef’s kitchen, with its adjoining screened in dining deck. There is also an office area. The lower level is wheelchair-friendly with wider doors, large roll-in shower, grab bars, etc. Enjoy your privacy on the large back lanai, overlooking lush tropical vegetation, while you soak in the sun or barbeque. If you want to relax in the shade, choose the lower covered lanai that opens onto the backyard. Trade winds waft through the house keeping it cool. Ceiling fans add additional breeze when needed. Whether you are indoors or out, relax, stretch out, listen to the waves, and enjoy the garden vegetation and mountain views.

You can have absolute privacy during your stay. However, if you have a need or desire, the local contact person is nearby, ready to attend to any needs you may have. Also, if you would like any additional services, she can arrange these for you. These other amenities might include a massage therapist, a chef, tour guide, housekeeping and laundry services (the latter especially nice for longer stays). Self-serve on-site laundry available also for an additional fee. A guide book of suggested local activities and events, with maps, is at the house. There is also a copy of an island guide book available for your use during your stay.

One of the best snorkeling sites on the island is Wai ‘Opae Tidepools Marine Conservation Area, a 2-block walk away. In protected waters, you can swim and snorkel amongst coral and a myriad of colorful ocean creatures, including sea turtles. If you are not into swimming, at low tide, you can walk the rims of the pools and look down into the colorful sea fans and schools of fish. The area is wonderful for walking along the roads or the lava ocean front. Various adult sized snorkel gear, float noodles, and beach towels are provided for use.

Five minutes down the road is Ahalanui Warm Springs Park, where volcanically heated water mixes with seawater to provide a natural hot pond for swimming and soaking. Five more minutes brings you to Pohoiki Point for surfing and boogie boarding and another warm pond. Fifteen minutes from the house is Kehena Black Sand Beach.

LIVE LAVA VIEWING - Pele wanders as she likes, her trail of molten lava creating new land. If the lava flow is near the east end, it is only about a 15-20 minute drive to go see lava as it pours glowing red into the sea, sending plumes of steam skyward while creating earth's newest land. Halema’uma’u Crater has been active for several years and can be viewed from within Volcanoes National Park, which is forty-five minutes from the house.

Pahoa Town is 10 minutes away with quaint shops and delicious dining. Local outdoor markets near Pahoa and in Hilo are wonderful & interesting experiences: pick up garden-fresh groceries and local art, or just soak in the colorful scene. Hilo is a short drive north with shopping, theaters, waterfalls, botanical gardens, outdoor markets, zoo, cinemas, museums, and more. Kona is 2 hours away.

The home is fully furnished with linens and kitchen needs. WiFi Broadband Internet is awaiting your laptop if you want to stay 'connected'. There is a Sat TV- Bring your iPod/iPad/MP3 to hook into the iHome system. There is an outdoor barbecue. Also provide on site are: Beach towels & mats; snorkel gear. All you need to bring is your swimsuit, a few comfy clothes, and get ready to relax and enjoy.

Wonderful Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We, two adults, truly enjoyed Kapoho Kaiyo Ocean Retreat as our retreat place on the Big Island! We had plenty of space to do tai chi and yoga upstairs and downstairs. The kitchen was great to work in and had high quality dishware, utensils, pots and pans. The whole house is nicely decorated and beds comfy. Of course, the snorkeling was spectacular. Mars was available, helpful, and very attentive to our needs. We would love to return.

Great Location

We loved the location of this place with snorkeling and the hot springs nearby. Even incoming ballistic missiles couldn't detract from our stay!

clean, quiet, useful and heartfelt

  • 5 of 5

the house is so clean, well equipped, comfortable and so hearfelt. We had regret to stay only 3 days. the sea near the house was so so so so nice.... I'd like to be back in near future.

The thing we have to think... it's difficult to find the right corner to turn to this village at night, no sign, we have to check during the daytime, and the other thing is we pay to use washing machine or go to the town for coin laundry.

Anyway we loved this blue house so much, thank you for all!!!

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay and we hope to welcome you back soon. Yes, utilities are very expensive on the islands, so we do charge for laundry use, less than the local laundromat. And yes, the corner to turn off the rural highway into the subdivision area is not well marked; that's why I give such detailed directions in the driving directions, to help people note the landmarks that precede the turn.

Great stay at Kaiyo Ocean Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We have visited Hawaii for a number of times, and our stay at Kaiyo Ocean Retreat was one of the best ones.

It is a light short walk to the tide pools where we've observed the marine life for hours and have never been bored. Our time in the house was pleasurable and restful not only because this house is a pretty big 2-story space in a very good condition. Everything in this house is made with love including the walls' colors and small floral arrangements from fresh tropical flowers around the house. Thanks to the owners, it was the retreat.

Regarding the distance to the local grocery stores, we'd recommend to purchase all groceries once for the entire stay either at Costco for those who arrives to Kona or at KTA store on the way from the Hilo airport.

Hopefully, we'll visit the pools again and stay in the same house.

Great house, great hosts, and great neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

In early November my family had the pleasure of staying in this charming property on the east coast of the big island. The house was in great shape and the kitchen was well equipped for making your meals. My young son loved chasing the gekos around the porch, and we really appreciated Mar's loaning us a float for him to ride in on some of the natural pools we visited.

The neighbors brought us bananas for our little one and made us feel part of the neighborhood during our stay. In my opinion the best feature of the neighborhood is the snorkeling at the tide pools and the hosts providing equipment for everyone to snorkel.

If you are looking for a quiet place to unwind or a great base of operations for exploring Hawai'i I would look no further. I would love to visit again.

Thanks Deb and Mars for your great hospitality.

Close to Tide pool Snorkeling

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with the location. It was far from stores but closes to tide pool. The house has many gears for snorkeling, the room was messy but the gears worked fine. We miss snorkeling there, after the first dip, all of us could feel the difference. Must be the mineral of lava rock that made us feel energized! Thanks for the community and traveller who take a good care of the area and environment. The house has nice layout and unique color. The backyard and patio compliment each other. We had a great time there. The only complaint is when we arrived floor was very dusty and somewhat sticky. We had to clean the floor twice to feel ok with it.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay! "Sticky floor" ? - it is always cleaned carefully so we are not sure what happened or if it just feels 'sticky' with the salt air deposits for those not used to living by the ocean. The floor is cleaned before and after each guest.

About Deb

I've always been a mountain girl and spend a lot of time hiking around my home in Alaska. However, I also love the tropics and the ocean, and I am very fascinated by Pele and her volcanic activity. My second home in Hawaii provides a great (warm!) retreat to relax at and from which to explore this incredible island.

Deb purchased this house in 2007

Why Deb chose Kapoho

I bought land here after a visit to a friend, though I had not come looking for property. The area has such a wonderful feel: relaxed, warm, friendly, peaceful, wonderful tropical vegetation, close to the fantastic ocean tidepools, and great fresh food markets. I designed the house to capture the trade winds, to withstand the elements, and to provide a wonderful transition from the indoors to outdoors. Once the house was finished in 2007, I chose to share it with others as a vacation rental.

What makes this house unique

When I spend time at my property, I gather fresh food at the local market, and then settle in to just relax at house, listening to the ocean. Of course, there is usually work for me to do, but I also go out the front door and walk the coast, go snorkeling, and soak in the nearby warm pond. I head off to explore the lava areas - nearby, Volcanoes Nat'l Park, and up Mauna Kea - I visit botanical gardens, hike and do photography. It's a wonderful base for going off on challenging explorations, or just hanging near home and relaxing. If I don't want to eat on my own deck, I partake of the local food at the markets and in the quaint retaurants in Pahoa (10 min away). This is peaceful 'Old' Hawaii - not the place for those who want shopping and night life - it IS the place for rest, relaxation, rejuvenation, and exploration. It's a great place whether one is solo, wanting time with a special someone, or bringing the whole family - or extended family - to enjoy time together in wonderful Hawaii. Come visit. You just might fall in love with the area also!
