Lovely home in lovely area-GREAT for families
This was our 3rd year renting a house in Big Canoe, and this one did not disappoint! It is spacious, has 3 FULL bathrooms, has an awesome space downstairs for us to send the kids, and is very well kept. The owners are kind and respond quickly to messages or calls. We had a great stay! My comments are more of FYI’s, NOT complaints!
-The house is well stocked with plenty of towels, dishes, kitchen utensils, etc. There are even little soaps in each bathroom, like a hotel! BUT make sure to bring your own trashbags and laundry supplies! This was purely my own oversight; I did bring the detergent thankfully, but I totally forgot trashbags. Thankfully there were some plastic grocery bags we could use. There is a grocery store nearby, but it will take about 20 minutes to get there (mountain driving takes longer).
-There are tv’s in 2 of the bedrooms, and a large tv in the big room where the pool table is. However, there is not one in the main living area. If this is something that matters to you, you may want to bring one so you can use a streaming service. There is great wifi, and the tv’s have Netflix and other apps already, but I don’t think there’s cable (we didn’t use it, if there was).
-The dishwasher and I had issues on our last night. It was probably user error, but after an hour of fighting with it I finally called the owner and let her know. She was very kind and even offered to come look at it. It had worked fine the rest of the time, but you may just want to bring some disposable stuff, just in case.
-There are some cleaning supplies provided, but bring some extra paper towels if you have kids that are prone to spills, like mine!
We really did have a great stay! Big Canoe offers a super fun lake area with inflatables, canoes, paddleboards, paddleboats, and a rockslide, along with the man-made beach. There is a pool there as well. They have gotten a bit strict with the lifeguards and what you are allowed to actually bring on to the beach, but it was fun regardless. In case you didn’t look it up, there is a $10/day/person charge to go to that area, but it is so worth it!
Thank you to our wonderful hosts for a great 4th of July vacation!
Beautiful Rustic Home for Rest and Relaxation
I don’t usually leave reviews, but feel compelled to leave one for this vacation. I must admit after reading the latest review from Andrea, I was concerned about our upcoming stay this past week. Upon reading in my opinion the contradicting review, I immediately contacted the owner about my concerns. Most importantly about the cleanliness of the property due to my son having severe allergies. Marisa, the owner responded right away and not only filled me in, but reassured me that her home was and is treated for pest control on a regular basis. I took the chance, and I am so glad I did.
I can only speak for myself, but when we arrived, the home was just as beautiful if not more so in person than it was on the vrbo website. Keep in mind you are surrounded by wilderness so an occasional fly or bug may come in if the door is left open too long etc. However, I can assure you that during our stay, there were no bugs or roaches crawling in the beds or cabinets for that matter. This home was extremely clean and the beds/pillows were very comfortable. So welcoming after a 12 hour drive.
Big Canoe is a very family friendly community resort. There is definitely something for everyone. Yes, you do have to drive 10 minutes to get to the pool and main roads which at times can be a pain, but you get use to it and learn to plan accordingly. Yes, there are addition fees such as access to the pool, renting a boat, golf, tennis, etc but no different than other resorts. In my opinion, the pool shouldn’t be an added expense, but that isn’t the owners fault.
Speaking of the owner, Marisa is nothing short of amazing. She was quick to respond to any and all of our questions or concerns not just from the beginning, but for the entire duration of our stay. Unfortunately, I had a rafting accident in Helen, Georgia (about an hour away) that required an ER visit. Marisa was so accommodating and we felt so comforted by her kindness and compassionate nature. It was an absolute pleasure working with her. Staying here was both peaceful and relaxing. I am so grateful that I did not cancel this reservation based of one review. My family and I would highly recommend Big Canoe and staying in Marisa and Roberto’s beautifully kept cozy home. We hope to return again some day.
Loved big canoe already made reservations for next year!! Just not in this house
Big canoe was amazing. We had so much fun as a family. We can’t wait to come back next year.
This house was OK ...not great and not awful. There were some largely negative things that were made unclear in the listing That I wish I would’ve been advised ahead of time.
Driving Distance to Amenities...
Having to Driving 10 minutes down the mountain to get to the lake and Pool was definitely a negative.
The amenities are not included in the house. For our family of 6: 4 children and two adults we paid an additional $300 for the week.
The narrowness of the terrace level stairs bedroom/living area.
Not ADA compliant.
Adults had just to walk sideways to get down the stairs, and it was very steep for children and older people. Don’t expect grandparents to easily climb the stairs . If you have anybody with disabilities or small children this is not a good rental for you. Tripping Hazards such as rugs with no pad and steep stairs with no gate were the main problems.
Additional issues were cleaning chemicals that were not locked up and within easy reach of children,Mousse traps and dirty filled, roach sticky tape that got stuck to one of our children’s arms.
Insects and roaches in the sheets and in the closets as well as crawling in the cabinets.
Be aware of anybody with dust mite allergies; Severe triggers everywhere specially in the bedding and under the beds.
Be aware of the remoteness of property and having to bring everything with you in case of an emergency.
We had a child with a fever in the middle of the night and it was a precarious ride down the mountain to find someplace to buy more fever relief on Memorial Day after we ran out.
Check the propane when you check in. We ran out of propane on the gas grill and had to cook or hamburgers in the frying pan which wasn’t a big deal until we were told that we had to replace the propane it was the renters responsibility. The last thing we wanted to do on memorial day was go and find someplace to fill a propane tank . We would’ve brought our own, Instead of paying $25 to have it filled and having to leave it.
Be aware that you have to take all garbage to the dump stations at the gate. That means putting bags of garbage into your car and driving at 11 minutes down the mountain to dump it. We left it overnight and it made the house smell like garbage.
Not a big deal but be aware that is the policy of Big Canoe.
VRBO sends each and every guest emails that include the house manual/cottage book prior to arrival.in our many correspondences I asked you to please visit the Big canoe website for information on the amenities and the fee schedule. This home is not on the top of the mountain, it is in the lowlands. The morning of the date of your arrival we had guests leave. The house was cleaned and all of the bed linens were laundered personally by me.These linens were then put on the beds. Every mattress and pillow has a dust and allergen protector on them. We have monthly pest control by Arrow Exterminators. We had our pest control on 5/1. When you told me you found a bug in the house I immediately called them and I arranged o have them come to the house first thing in the morning. I asked you if that was okay and never received a response. We do not enter our properties without consent of the guest.I am sorry that you were so angry that I wouldn't cancel your reservation when you discovered, 4 days prior to your arrival, that this is a private home in the mountains. This is not a resort hotel with concierge and childcare services. Our record speaks for itself.
Our family of seven had a wonderful experience! the layout of the house was perfect for our group of four adults and three children. Clean and beautifully decorated. Would highly recommend!
Owners were prompt to respond to any needs we had.
Thank you so much. We do everything in our power to make each and every guests stay a wonderful experience.
