Overview

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

To enjoy all the delights of Uzès to the maximum, what can be better than being right in the center and taking part in the daily rituals of life in this very special little town?

As well, here you have SPACE with large rooms and high ceilings giving a total of around 140sq.m. of living area on two levels with a quiet terrace adjoining the upper level.

The two weekly markets set up their stalls right below your windows and around the central fountain. On other days too, there are fresh fish stalls in addition to the greengrocer, cafés & baker plus innumerable little watering holes and eating places.

This very spacious apartment is situated in a privileged position overlooking the medieval Place aux Herbes right in the heart of Uzès.

It occupies the two top levels of what was an 1700'C Merchant's house and features a vast living room overlooking the square with sandstone fireplace and high and beamed cathedral ceiling.

For bookworms, there is a large selection of books to browse through, mostly in English though some are in Swedish, French and occasionally other language.

Afternoon sunshine pours into the delightful kitchen/dining cum family which also has comfortable seating.

A large, sunny bedroom with en-suite shower room and a separate wc are also located on this level, overlooking a pedestrian passage and roof tops.

From the livingroom, a handcrafted wrought iron staircase leads to the upstairs bedroom with en-suite bathroom and a small dressing room.

The west-facing terrace with dining furniture and sun umbrellas is also reached from here. Views over the old tiled roofs and the far away hills is a very relaxing sight indeed after the bustle of the square.

The very best address in town also ensures you have everything practically at your feet. Of all the pleasures & necessities Uzès has to offer, none is more than 2 minutes walk away!

The square itself has a number of small outdoor cafés and restaurants under the medeival sandstone vaulted arches or under the shade of the plane trees.

Enjoying the benefits of being high up, there are also stairs to get here! This apartment is not really

suitable for anyone with a walking disability & needing a lift.

Our previous guests have been mostly couples, one or two at the time, and happily, many returning for 2nd and 3rd visits.

Being in the very heart of life in a small town is something which is a joy in itself.

Stroll down to one of the 4/5 cafés outside the front door and watch the square come to life of a morning.

Get the croissant from the boulangerie opposite, a newspaper if you feel the need of 'outside'. Otherwise, simply be. And see.

It has to be experienced to be believed.

About Christina

After having lived a rather globe-trotting life, Uzès is where I finally settled and still remain some 20 years later! For all the good reasons of climate, atmosphere, history, the local products of southern France etc, the list is in fact endless.

I have yet to find a town as special as Uzes though now, having more free time, I do like to travel, visiting other places and friends, far and near.

This means that my home is available for rent and you can all come and see what it is like to live in a really special, authentic small French town like Uzes!

Someone recently commented 'it's like 'falling in love again......'

Christina purchased this apartment in 1990

Why Christina chose Uzès

For all the reasons previously given and I have not regretted this decision for one single moment.

What makes this apartment unique

Here you are, in the very heart of the little town (traffic free) and enjoy looking down on the two very colourful weekly markets from your windows, check if your friends have yet arrived in the café on the square below, smell if the cheese stall has opened and later on, observe the night settling over the square when all grows quiet.....and sometimes see the full moon rising over the Ducal towers to the east....

From the terrace, you can sit in solitary splendor contemplating the old tiled roofs or far-away hills with just the birds doing their evening rounds for company....

Seems blissful?

It is!

Fabulous accommodation in the heart of a fabulous historical market town

  • 5 of 5

This surely is the best address in town - right on the Place aux Herbes - the main square with restaurants, cafes and bars right on the doorstep. We loved the homely feel of the apartment and having the roof terrace makes it really special. When we went up one of the towers in the town we could see how few properties have this outside space.

The sitting room is a lovely place to relax (with a lovely array of books to peruse including guides on the local area) and the kitchen/living room has everything you need if you decide to cook up a few meals, rather than go out every day.

My husband, 17-year-old son and his friend had a great holiday staying here for two weeks during the last half of August with loads to do. We have taken home some happy memories (and lots of photos). Christina is lovely and happy to recommend things to do or places to go. Very accommodating.

Centrally located apartment with great ambiance

  • 4 of 5

In many ways this is a lovely apartment, especially the kitchen, living room and main bedroom. It looks out over the main square and is therefore a bit noisy at times. The mezzanine floor with bedroom and bath all in the one room did not appeal so much. The other disadvantage was the dimly lit flights of stairs up to the apartment. Nevertheless we loved relaxing in the living room and having direct access to the centre of Uzes.

Disappointing!

  • 2 of 5

Didn't meet our expectations. We booked to stay for 14 nights but after a week of 36deg heat and no air conditioning, we decided to leave five days early.

The apartment badly needs updating, the washing machine had a broken hinge, the general cleanliness was below standard. We were told that a plumber was coming to fix the hot water tap in the kitchen and after 9 days he still hadn't arrived so for hot water we had to boil a small kettle a couple of times each time we wanted to do our dishes.

On the plus side, we enjoyed the lounge area, and found it very comfortable.

Not recommended...

Owner's Response: Dear Anne, I regret that you found the temperatures of the French summer too much. In an historical and listed square, such as Place aux Herbes, air conditioning units are totally forbidden as they disfigure the protected sandstone facades. Instead, we use electric fans (of which there are 3) and open windows/close shutters/curtains. (Windows are on 3 sides) As to up-dating (new bathrooms? new floors? new furniture?) Currently no plans as most guests appreciate the fact that this is a home, not a hotel room and with more than generous space in all areas. The washing machine hinge is NOT broken but loose, and I simply ask guests to take care. We had the most unfortunate experience to host an unspeakably grubby Australian family just prior to your arrival and spent double time (with 2 persons) cleaning to rectify this. Given your early arrival, we did all which is humanly possible. The kitchen tap was one of the many casualties left behind and the plumber, having ordered the piece, subsequently fixed it. In France, and I imagine elsewhere, workmen are not on tap (so to speak) Yours sincerely, Christina

This really is the best address in Uzes.

  • 5 of 5

I had the great fortune to spent almost the entire month of October 2015 in this wonderful apartment. I loved every minute of it. It is well equipped and in the perfect location. And while it is located on the top floor of the building, I was glad for the exercise after enjoying a croissant or two.

The kitchen is well equipped, with a large refrigerator with freezer, a convection oven that was very efficient (I want one of those!), and more kitchen ware than you could ever use. I used the bedroom on the main floor with the attached bathroom and it was great. The bed was very comfortable. There is a additional half-bath on that level for guests. It had the best collection of Napoleon stuff I've ever seen.

I was traveling alone and felt very safe in the apartment. There is a locked door to the building and then a large, locked gate to the apartment with an additional door.

Christina is the most wonderful hostess and was very helpful and responsive. The weather turned a bit chilly and we had a fun experience getting the radiators to come on, but we did. I was glad for the warmth for those few days. I feel very lucky to have met her.

As I was travelling solo, I ate most of my meals in. With the twice a week market, I prepared wonderful meals with fresh, local ingredients. And for those lazy nights, any restaurant is happy to take a carry out/take away order.

Uzes is in a perfect location to see so many things, including the Camargue, Nimes, Pont du Gard, Avignon, and the abundance of grottes in the area. Just driving around the countryside was a wonderful experience. I spent many evenings walking around the town, enjoying the weather and the beautiful buildings. I felt very safe at all times. For those lazy days, the terrace on the rear of the apartment is a fantastic place to read and enjoy a glass of wine...or two. I saw gorgeous sunsets and one evening, saw about 20 hot air balloons floating over the town.

As I had a car, I took the easy (but not inexpensive) way out and purchased a pass to the nearby parking garage. I just didn't want to have to hunt for a parking space every time I took the car out. If you are used to searching for parking, then you may not want to use the garage.

I would recommend this property without hesitation. I would give it many more stars than just 5. I want to return to the best address in Uzes as soon as I possibly can. Thank you Christina for making my dream trip a reality.

Lovely apartment in Uzes

  • 4 of 5

A charming apartment, wonderfully positioned in the square. I was thrilled to sleep under the tiles on the mezzanine. Would definitely recommend it. I would avoid the restaurants in the square, we had a poor meal in the nearest one to the apartment as we arrived too late to look around properly. Had a fabulous meal in the Petit Jardin though, on the main street. Highly recommended.

discovering the Gard

  • 5 of 5

A charming, eccentric, interesting treasure of an apartment in a charming, beautiful and almost unknown little city in the Midi. The only negative to the apartment is several flights of steep stairs, but we (in our 70s) thought the daily climb worth it. (Not, though, for persons with real limitations, crutches...or for families with very young kids in strollers) A better location can hardly be imagined, overlooking the place aux Herbes, with its 6+ cafes and restos, the Wed. bio-market and the huge Sat. market. Many VRBO listings are little better than motel rooms. This is a home, with warmth, books, personality. The owner is very helpful and her housekeeper pleasant and thorough. We ended up buying in the region and will use the apt for overflow guests.

Throughout the year and particularly numerous in summer, Uzès offers a wide program of festivals, concerts, art exhibitions , antique markets, book fairs and bull running. In other words, something for everyone!

For instance, a canoe trip down the river Gardon with a pic-nic, terminates with the glorious vista of the 2000-year old Pont du Gard rising up before and above you, a truly breath catching moment.

(The canoeing is quite leisurely)
