Overview

About the property

Fully equipped 3 Bedrooms, 2 Full Baths, Sleeps 6, Washer & Dryer

This beautiful home is in a peaceful field and forest setting on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island. This house was purchased new from realtors that were going out of business. At the time it was sold, the company was using it as a showcase home. The minute you walk inside, you will know why.

I will never forget our first guest saying, "This house is beautiful! I mean really beautiful!" Like so many others, the first thing that captured my attention was how bright, sunny and warm the feeling is. In part, I think it is due to the southern exposure on the side of the house with the kitchen, deck and sliding glass doors. When you add the vaulted ceiling and large flowing design, the entire area fills with sunlight. There is an overwhelming sensation that comes with the peace of being in fresh, open spaces.

By using the back entrance, you will enter through the kitchen. The cabinets are beautifully constructed of real maple, the wood flooring in the dining room and hall were constructed to match.

When you walk into the living room or any of the bedrooms, you will find that they still look like they did at the time the house was purchased. Even the carpeting shows very little, if any, wear. (The quality of this home far in exceeds my own. It is truly beautiful in both design and construction.)

Sitting on the deck you can look at a field of meadow grass and wild flowers. Graced with tranquility, the couple that just departed at the end of June, 2015 told us how much they enjoyed watching the deer in the field while having their coffee every morning. At night, guests enjoy gazing at the Milky Way while listening to the soothing and unmistakable call of owls.

Located amidst Acadia National Park properties, there are endless recreational possibilities. Right from the house, a 15 minute walk puts you on some of the park's roads and trails, giving you access to nearby mountains and three different ponds. An ocean boat launch is only 2 miles away. Bass Harbor Lighthouse, (one of the most photographed in Maine), seafood restaurants, Bar Harbor, and the Swan's Island ferry are just a short drive. After a full day of activity, you can return for a relaxing whirlpool bath, enjoy a movie, or have a glass of wine on the deck. Fully equipped with everything you need to relax in comfort. It is a common sight to see deer, fox, and other wildlife right from the living room window or back deck while enjoying your morning coffee.

Our Guestbook: We are grateful for our guests that take the time and trouble to make an entry in our guest book both at the house and on line. We have completely filled one guest book and leave it at the house for you to read. In it, you will find many descriptions of what people enjoyed most while being our guests. You can use it to get helpful hints on everything from which restaurants were the best to which hikes had the most beautiful views and which ones they found difficult.

About Larry or Dawn

The house was purchased brand new by my mother-in-law. It was hoped to be an investment piece to give her financial security. Then the market crashed and selling it would have been at a loss so Larry and I try to rent it by the week to make sure her future is secure. In addition, Larry built an efficiency apartment in the walk out basement. For the last five years it has been rented to a NE Harbor police officer. He has a wonderful personality and offers an extra layer of protection to the house.

We have always used the back entrance to the house. There are approximately 13 steps from the parking area to the deck. We believe using the back door is the biggest reason the house has stayed in such pristine.

I want to be sure that the steps won't be a problem for anyone, or I would feel terrible! Having any kind of negative impact on someone's vacation would be enough to literally make me cry. The steps would definitely be a problem for me if I were on vacation! I just can't seem to teach my wheelchair how to master that stair trick. On the flip side, we are quite sure the steps keep me from popping wheelies on the maple flooring in the hall, however.

hidden treasure

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I do a lot of traveling and I will have to say that this was a great find on my part. This place was clean, spacious, quiet and in an absolute gorgeous area! We did a lot of hiking, some kayaking, relaxing, shopping and site seeing. Maine and Acadia are beautiful. Consider renting this place. Our hosts Dawn and Larry were great!

GREAT HOME TO STAY IN!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I travel and book through vrbo sometimes when we travel and this home was Wonderful! It met ALL of our needs. It was VERY CLEAN, comfortable, quiet and spacious and is in a nice area off of the road. The kitchen was stocked well with everything you need to cook. We put steaks on the grill one night and it was such a delight to find the grill nice and CLEAN and in perfect condition. That has always been a downer in previous homes we have stayed in. Everything in the house worked for us. We took morning walks, did a lot of shopping in Bar Harbor and visited many of their restaurants. Larry & Dawn were very easy to communicate with, just wish we could have met them while staying there. We turned our 60's music up and had a great time with our friends. We would definitely stay here again!

Felt like home

  • 4 of 5

We really felt at home at Dawn and Larry's vacation rental. The home was roomy, spotless and very comfortable. We appreciated the binder and guest book which provided lots of information about the Acadia area. Our only suggestion would be a light for the outside wooden stairs as it was difficult to see when returning in the evening.

Otherwise we were very happy with our stay and highly recommend this rental.

Perfect Home Base For Exploring Acadia

  • 5 of 5

Of the many properties we have rented this was one of the best. House was VERY clean, owners are WONDERFUL, and location is IDEAL. If we were to return to the area we would definitely return to this exact home, no questions asked.

Clean and decorated nicely!

  • 5 of 5

This home was very inviting. Set back off the road. Some morning traffic noise but not bad with windows closed. We were so busy we didn't get a chance to fully utilize the kitchen but it was well stocked with dishware, pots and pans, and some spices, as well as foil, plastic wrap and such. Bedding was comfortable. All rooms were clean and well maintained. Lots of games and videos for adults and children. Books available too! Not a place to stay if you have trouble with stairs as entrance is second level. Able to contact owners easily if needed. Easy drive to Bar Harbor and the Acadia National Park. We would stay here again.

Owner's Response: Diane wrote this wonderful message in our guest book. "We had a wonderful stay here in your home. Greatly appreciate how clean and nicely furnished and decorated the home is. My husband especially appreciated the wide soaking, (jetted), tub as he suffers from chronic pain and gets some relief in the tub! We have stayed in many homes all over the country and yours certainly rates at the top. Thanks! Diane & Andy" (Printed with permission.)

We loved staying on the quiet side!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed a week and toured the whole island plus the Schoodic Peninsula. Acadia is gorgeous. We did a lot of hiking and ate our share of lobster! This property fit our needs perfectly. It was very clean and quiet, yet it didn't take too long to get anywhere we wanted to go. We enjoyed watching a doe with two fawns in the yard one morning and flushed more deer another day. Bar Harbor is fun to visit but it's much more peaceful on this side of the island. Thanks for offering a great place for us to stay on Mount Desert Island!

Come share a piece of Mount Desert Island. Acadia National Park is always one of the most visited parks in the country. The views are nothing short of spectacular. You will find tall pines seemingly growing out of rocks, mountains with granite cliffs, hiking trails, ponds, lakes and salt-water beaches, and ocean waves crashing in fantastic displays on our rock-bound coast. Lighthouses? You can see as many as five from Cadillac Mountain.

Take in historic Bar Harbor. You can eat a pizza while watching a movie or listen to live music in the village square. There are bike rentals, sightseeing boats, whale-watching cruises, kayaking and rock climbing excursions just to mention a few of the adventures awaiting you. Lobster pounds and seafood restaurants are everywhere just in case you are interested. Not interested? How about gliding in a plane with no engine or seeing a lumberjack show with Tina from 'Survivor', or looking through the old Chicken Barn full of antiques or....

Other Activities: golf, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, canoing, boat rentals, berry picking
