As long as you don't mind being in the clouds for half the day, this place is just amazing. The house was fully remodeled with a fantastic kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.. The view of the coffee plantation, gardens and down to Kona is special. Especially when taken in with a cup of organic, estate grown coffee in front of the fire table. The beds are very comfortable and there is ample space for 5 to sleep in total privacy. We found this place to be a sanctuary from the heat after a long day on the shore. Highly recommend.
A hidden gem!
This was our first family vacation to the Big Island, ages range from 5 to 75 year old. We all loved the property and the beautiful house. It had everything we needed, especially the washer & dryer was modern and awesome. It came with detergent too. What we all loved the most was the free coffee samples, tea samples and complimentary fruits. It was all so thoughtful of the owners. The free atv tour and 20% off from the store next door was awesome too!
The rooms were clean and plentiful and accommodated our whole family. My only suggestion would be to add a window covering to the upstairs bedroom. I felt uneasy showering there, so I went down to the master to shower. Even though it was remote and nobody probably can see you, I still did not feel comfortable showering in front of an open window. Overall we loved the house and Lynn was very responsive to all our questions. We highly recommend this rental house!
Staying at Mountain Thunder was magical in every way. Lynn and her team are incredible hosts who are polite, responsive, and extremely friendly.
I went with my family (wife, college age son, brother, and Mom) and the plantation house was perfect. We had plenty of room and privacy because of the three Master Suites. The living room was warm and inviting and has a great 4K Samsung TV that is connected to the internet. The WiFi is blazing fast (350 down/ 25 up). The kitchen is stocked as well as (or better than) your kitchen at home. The clothes washer and dryer are brand new and they provide detergent and dryer sheets. Every aspect of the house was new and perfect.
We took advantage of the FREE ATV tour and it was AWESOME!. Mike was a great tour guide and very knowledgeable of the coffee plantation history and the process of making coffee (from tree to cup). You get to taste coffee cherries and see the processing plant. I must say that Mountain Thunder Kona coffee is AMAZING. We were greeted with a huge basket of assorted treats along with fresh fruit from their grounds. We were frequent visitors to the gift store where you can sample all of their products (coffee, jams, jellies, honey, chocolate covered coffee beans, ceramics, coffee sacks, and other cool stuff). You get a 10% discount for staying on property.
The one thing that I would caution people on is the weather. The coffee plantation is in the Cloud Forest. This means that in the morning it's clear and beautiful with incredible views and around 11am the clouds start to move in. Normally, around 2pm the rain starts and stays around for an hour or so. It's a warm rain but it can be heavy at times. We felt that this weather pattern actually added to our experience. It definitely created the lush tropical jungle that surrounds this property. If you want to avoid the rain, just drive down to Kona where it is always hot and dry.
We are already planning our return trip to this wonderful property. It made for an incredible experience that we are hoping to create again.
Beautiful welcoming Hawaii vacation home
This is a beautiful home for family and friends to enjoy and a great Kona area base to explore the island from. Quiet, safe, peaceful. Very comfortable beds. Great barbecue, amazing view off patio/lanai. The kids theme room is super cool. Foosball table and other games. All the tools and space needed to prepare gourmet meals. Plus on a coffee farm, a large amount coffee supplied energized us for our adventures each day. Lynn was so nice and friendly, with suggestions and making us feel very welcome during our vacation. I would definitely go back to the Big Island and definitely stay here again.
If you would like to have a big, safe, beautiful home to stay in during your big island vacation you can not go wrong with this one.
An amazing property and vacation experience
We were the first guests at this property and cannot say enough about the amazing experience we had staying here. First, the house itself is gorgeous, specious and had everything we needed. It's beautiful. Second, the views are amazing and you're quite isolated perched up at 3,200ft above Kailua-Kona. It's only about a 20 min drive to downtown and the beaches and well worth the drive. Just keep in mind it is normally about 15 degrees cooler at the property and can get chilly at night. We stayed in February with some inclement weather and soon found out why there are space heaters and electric blankets on some of the beds! There are so many amenities all over the house and the porches on the back of the house overlooking the ocean are fabulous.
You are staying on a working coffee farm (though the house is segregated and would never know it if you didn't walk next door and tour the farm). Walk next door for a 30-min tour of the facility or a 90-min ATV tour of the entire farm and production facilities. And there's plenty of coffee samples! All this made staying here even more special and fun. The property manager, property owner and staff at Mountain Thunder were extremely gracious and made sure we had everything we needed during our week's stay. I really cannot say enough about this vacation rental. You're not just getting a great house but an experience and adventure staying here. We will remember it for a long time.
Highly recommend you take advantage of the complimentary ATV tour of the coffee farm. It was enlightening and had no idea so much went into each cup of coffee. Not to mention some of the best coffee in the world.
If you have the opportunity to book this property for your stay, do it. It's a must have experience.
One of the best features of our unique property is being located on the property of Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation, a working 20-acre coffee farm. Guests can literally walk next door to enjoy a variety of tours, locally made products and of course- world class coffee!
Our location has the benefit of feeling remote and secluded while only being a 15-minute drive to downtown Kona and multiple white sand beaches. Enjoy on-site hiking, wildlife viewing (wild cockatoos and parrots are likely to greet you in the mornings) and some of the cleanest air in the world produced by the abundant vegetation in the renowned Cloud Forest microclimate.
