Big Island Vacation Houses presents: The Mango House. This lush, tropical oasis is located in beautiful North Kohala and offers an immersive Hawaiian experience removed from the tourist traps and bustle of other locales. In fact, it may have you believing you're a local.

A large variety of lush flora envelopes and divides the property, including hibiscus, birds of paradise, orchids, ferns, palms, an awesome banyan tree and fruit trees offering the freshest mangoes, papayas, bananas, and avocados that are yours for the picking. Savor oceanic, pastoral or jungle views as tropical birds sing, geckos chatter, the island breezes caress the trees, and the resonance of the tide rhythmically whispering in the distance.

The Mango House is a luxuriously designed 2,000 square foot house. The king sized master bedroom on the first floor accesses the 1,000 ft. of covered lanai decks. The upstairs loft bedroom with another king bed as well as a trundle bed, has its own half bathroom and upper level private lanai with spectacular ocean views. There is a fantastic fully equipped kitchen with state of the art appliances and an amazing 6ft Koa slab island. The master bath has a vessel sink and bali stone shower with soaking tub. There is also a separate private outdoor Bali Stone shower that is great after a day at the beach.

You are a short drive from the historic town of Kapaau, home of the original King Kamehameha I Statue. The charming downtown area has great art galleries and several wonderful restaurant as well as Kamehameha Park which has great tennis courts, a public swimming pool, a skate park and wonderful children playground. There is even a small public golf course you can play on for a nominal fee. A short drive in the other direction leads you Keokea Beach Park, which is a great spot for a picnic. Continue on and you come to the end of the road at the stunning Pololu Valley Overlook where you can enjoy a spectacular view hike down to the valley.

A few minutes past Kapaau is the colorful town of Hawi, known as North Kohala’s biggest little town. It is home to a weekly farmer’s market that we think is one of the best on the island. Be sure to sample local varieties of popular fruits, like apple bananas, strawberry papaya and in season, super sweet white pineapple! Hawi is also the bicycle turnaround for the annual Ironman World Championship held every October and has a great selection of unique shops and tasty restaurants. The world famous Bamboo Restaurant is consistently voted one of the best restaurants on the island with a great lineup of live music featuring award winning Hawaiian musicians. There are also wonderful alternative healing practices located here, with massage therapists , acupuncture specialists, naturopaths, herbalists, and a variety of yoga styles represented.

North Kohala is perfectly located to take advantage of many fun activities including scenic coastal rides on horseback or ATVs, the Kohala Zipline, Kayaking the Kohala Ditch and hiking trails galore. Head up the mountain road to Waimea and experience one of the best scenic drives in the US, with incredible views of Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and its observatories and a birds eye view of South Kohala with all its resorts and white sand beaches. The beaches in Kohala are the best on the island, including world famous Hapuna beach (Conde Nast rated it one of the top 10 beaches in the world), scenic Mauna Kea Beach, child friendly Spencer Beach Park and local favorite Beach 69.

Head down the coast towards South Kohala and you’ll discover many historical sites and parks along the coastline to enjoy. Lapakahi State Park is the site of an ancient fishing village and great for whale watching. The harbor town of Kawaihae is home to a variety of tour companies offering scuba, snorkeling and whale watching tours. There’s also a nice selection of shops and galleries along with great dinning and music at the Blue Dolphin Restaurant or popular Café Pesto.

This private Eden reveals three other private houses spread out over 2 acres and presents a variety of accommodations, as each house offers it's own distinctive floor plan. The entire property sleeps 18-20. Please view our other rental listings at VRBO/215142, VRBO/215410 and VRBO/452049. The listing for the whole property is VRBO/481173

The Big Island's North Kohala district is the discriminating travelers' best-kept secret. Experience 'Old Hawaii' in the charming historic towns of Hawi and Kapaau, with artists' shops, galleries, and delightful cafes. Historic sites - the famous statue of King Kamehameha, state parks, tropical gardens, Pololu Valley - with its majestic views, black sand beach, and scenic hiking trails. Or kick back, and enjoy some of the island's best beaches. Whale watching is seasonal (December through April), but the sea turtle sightings occur year-round.

A vacation to remember!!!

  • 5 of 5

Besides having great friends to share the experience, the Mango House is exactly as advertised and more. It was like nothing we had stayed in before. comfortable, removed from the hustle and bustle of tourist areas. Quiet, beautiful with great amenities; full kitchen, comfortable beds, plenty of space to relax in and outside the house. The outdoor shower is great for washing off after a day at the beach and just because it is there and has running warm water. The owner responded same day. The house was open and ready when we arrived. We would all stay there again.

Thanks Mango House and owners,

The Folmar's and the Galloway's

The perfect winter getaway!!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Mango House was nothing short of amazing. My wife and I were looking for an escape from city life and from the East coast winter cold, and this beautiful home provided just the break that we needed.

As you arrive at the Mango House you immediately realize that you are in entering your own private slice of paradise. The house sits on a spacious lot full of tropical flora. The sights and sounds of the rain forest surround you. We especially enjoyed being lulled to sleep by the ocean surf, wildlife and the wind rustling the palm fronds at night. The house itself is tastefully decorated and very well appointed. The beds were incredibly comfortable. The den and kitchen are open and inviting allowing for a perfect environment for preparing dinner and relaxing. All the appliances were in perfect working condition.

Our favorite feature by far of the Mango house were the lanais. The lanai on the first floor spans the entire perimeter of the house with comfortable lounges and tables. We had many a post-beach beverage on the downstairs porch. We also took full advantage of the grill on the first floor lanai. The upstairs lanai, while smaller provides the perfect spot to have a cup of coffee while watching the sun rise or to gaze at the plethora of stars at night.

Shortly after arriving your will fall into the rhythm of 'island life.' Be sure to take advantage of the local fruit offerings in the neighborhood. You will find fruit stands at the end of driveways; most accepting payment via the honor method. Be sure to also stop by the Kohala Coffee Mill.

It was truly an incredible experience. Mahalo Mango House!

The Gecko House (they were everywhere...loved it!)

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay and thought the house and property were very nice. The house could use a little maintenance, but none of the issues were major. The house next door was being renovated, so there was a little construction noise during the day, but it was not very loud. If you are going to buy groceries near by go to Takata, I do not recommend Arakaki. The shops/restaurants in Hawi and Kapa'au were nice, we really enjoyed Kohala Coffee Mill. If you are going souvenir shopping I recommend Pacific Nature at the Queen's Shops in Waikoloa, they had a good selection and the prices were much better than shops closer to the house. Our favorite two beaches were Mauna Kea (they allow public beach access next to the resort) and Hapuna Beach State Park (there's a $5.00 entrance fee.) I hope this info helps any future renters.

Amazing! Best Vacation Ever!!!!

  • 5 of 5

The moment we turned into the driveway we knew we had chosen the perfect spot for a relaxing Big Island vacation. We were immediately surrounded by lush vegetation and tropical flowers. The owners brother, Mike, was there to greet us when we arrived.

We walked the property with him, gathering Mangos, avacados and coconuts and picking a big bouquet of flowers to put on the table. What a treat.

The house is beautiful, very well kept and had everything we needed. I woke every morning to the sound of palm trees in the breeze and curled up in the comfy wicker porch chair to have my coffee and read my book. In the evening we had pina coladas (made with fresh pineapple from the local farmers market) on the 2nd floor Lanai where we could watch the ocean.

There are two small towns nearby, North Kohola and Hawi that have great restaurants, coffee shops and interesting shopping.

There was a grocery store not far from the house. We found that we really enjoyed cooking in the well appointed kitchen and using the barbeque most nights. So relaxing!

We explored the island everyday. There are beautiful beaches near by and we found lots of places to snorkel. After our adventures we felt like we were coming home each evening!

WiFi and Direct TV were an added bonus!

Thank you Mango House for sharing the "real" Hawaii with us. What an amazing 38th Anniversary vacation!!

A side of Hawaii you might not expect.

  • 3 of 5

This house is located on the north of the Big Island in a tropical rainforest. The area is rural and for that reason considerably more interesting than the other more populated touristic areas. The downside of this is you must drive everywhere and there are no good beaches very close. The closest town is Kapaau about 5 miles away. The house is well designed and built. The outdoor shower is absolutely devine! The beds are comfortable. The kitchen and other appliances are modern and worked well. Nevertheless, we had the felling that things were a little run down. The screens on the doors were flopping around. The porch furniture was scruffy. This is probably due to the fact that it is quite wet here and it was difficult to dry things out.

The ocean views are very minimal although one does here the surf at night.

We were two couples, and there were not enough plates or utensils so that one had to wash up after each meal. There were only 3 chairs at the dining room table. It is an overstatement to say there are 2 bedrooms when the second one is an open loft. The second bathroom is tiny and does not include a shower or bath. Given the immense please of the outdoor shower, this is a minor annoyance. The sound proofing is nonexistent as far as we could tell.

This place has lots of unrealized potential. As it is, it is more a camp than a house. All in all, we enjoyed the place and especially the area, but would not likely come back here. An important reason for that is the amount of driving one does from here. Also, we visited in the winter, and experienced some stormy weather, so we might have a different view in the summer and fall.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the feedback on our property as, while we have local management and family, alas, we are currently located on the mainland. For that reason we provide both a local contact phone number of our capable manager as well as the owners phone number to all guests. Breakage is inevitable and we are understanding with guests on this note (I have four children after all!). The screen has been repaired and the missing dining room chair is back from the wood shop in Kona, both casualties of prior guests. These things happen. We imagined one of the additional teak chairs on the deck as a substitute in the meantime as well as the adjacent koa slab island with three stools. Plates and glasses have been located, and we apologize if there was a management oversight there. The pictures of the house do not overstate it's beauty: koa slab, ipe flooring, monkey pod custom stair case, mango trim, indoor and outdoor bali stone shower. The house has a cathedral ceiling, so it is true that there is no soundproofing for the loft, but we will have to agree to disagree on the "camp" reference as the photos of the house clearly illustrate it's warmth and beauty. We provide ample beach towels, beach chairs, boogie boards, snorkeling gear for the convenience of our guests. As far as the location, it is a 25 minute whale-watch of a drive along the North Kohala coast (no Kona vog or traffic!!) to the nicest beaches on the island: Hapuna, 69, Maumae, Mauna Kea; 2 miles from the spectacular Pololu Valley and the best hikes and horseback riding on the island (the historic Bond Estate, Opolu airport, Mahukona, Kapaa, Lapakahi State Park). That said, I do apologize for any shortcomings. Mahalo
