One of seven log cabins on Otter Lake in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula
About Christine Manninen
Manninen’s Cabins have been family-owned and operated for more than 80 years. The cabins were built by Ilmari and Flora Manninen, who married in 1919 and settled on a farm at Otter Lake, near the small village of Tapiola, Michigan. They had eight children between them, and opened the first of the cabins in 1937. Their son George and his wife Ruth purchased the property in the 1950s and went on to run the cabins for more than 50 years. The cabins are now owned and operated by George’s youngest daughter, Christine, who is proud of her Finnish heritage and the opportunity to continue the Manninen tradition.

We had an amazing stay at Manninen’s! Beautiful scenery, an awesome lake, and wonderful times with family. Intermittent cell phone service ended up being such a blessing - I could completely unplug while at the same time, I knew something would pop up in an emergency. It was the perfect balance and resulted in me actually disconnect from the world. Only 20 minutes from town, we were able to plan our trips into Houghton and up the Keweenaw perfectly and went on some fantastic adventures with the kiddo and the dog. The canoe, kayak and paddle board that are provided were all used by our group. So were the badminton set and the other yard games. One morning my husband and I used the canoe to go up the Otter River and fly fish a bit - we didn’t catch anything but saw an eagle take off about 50 feet away from us. We used the grills provided to cut down on the heat in the cabins. The towels were so plush! The owner is wonderful and so accessible, she will really go out of her way to make sure you enjoy your stay. My 6 year old is already talking about the “next time we go to Otter Lake we need to....” - thanks for a wonderful stay!
