Great location, many extras provided

  • 5 of 5

Great studio rental, great ocean view from unit and lanai. So many extras you don't generally find, guide books, beach towels/chairs/coolers,kitchen supplies, etc.. close to everything, but far enough away so it is quiet and relaxing. Unit was very well cleaned, we had a great stay.

Too small for more than 2 people. Beds need new mattresses. We cleaned vigorously before unpacking..

  • 3 of 5

On a positive note, kitchen and bathroom were well stocked. Very little space for luggage or clothing. We needed to clean everything vigorously prior to unpacking. Owner responded to queries promptly and thoroughly. We should have been reimbursed for the cleaning fee.

Owner's Response: From the onset it was evident these guests were going to be problematic. Their previous review before staying at our Studio was given no stars! She first complained that our unit was dirty and there was mold in the shower. Then they rewashed all the sheets and towels even though they were washed the day before the guests arrived. Another complaint was that the barbecue was too close to the Studio. The siding of the house is fire retardant in nature but more importantly they could have just moved the barbecue if they were so worried. Then they complained that the screens were on the exterior of the window casings making the unit unsafe....what? I have never seen screens on the inside of a window, but for safety sake you lock the windows and do not rely on screens. They then purchased new pillows (which I reimbursed them for) as our pillows were another problem. One of the guests also suggested I remove the pool in the backyard and put in a tea garden. Before their departure, they re-cleaned the unit and washed the bedding/towels again even though they had paid for housecleaning services. I can only ascertain that one of the guests enjoys cleaning or suffers with severe allergies. I hope they can find a place of their liking in the future but I doubt it.

We enjoyed our five-night stay here and would return with no worries.

This unit is at good location between two very popular beaches. It is well-maintained with nice furniture, and has a good offering of appliances and related supplies. Good for a couple or a small family that can sleep together in a single room. The driveway is a little tricky to negotiate in a large vehicle, but we managed in our 4WD Ford Expedition. Because of the unusual bad weather they had during our stay, we lost wifi for 3 of the 5 days and couldn't recover, but the owner was very responsive in trying to help. It turned out that we couldn't fix the problem because the upstairs neighbors were away and the equipment was located in that apartment. The owner gave us a small amount of financial compensation for the trouble, which we appreciated. But I would say if you have any trouble while there, you will at least get prompt attention.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your nice review. Unfortunately, this was the first time we had any internet outage in the six years we have rented the Studio. Sorry for the interruption of service. It was fortunate that we could communicate via phone text while trying to solve the problem. Time Warner cable was swamped with problems due to the severe weather though they tried to remediate the problem from their end more than once. You are welcome back, anytime. Mahalo, Gary Penir

Great location, good place

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our Kona stay and found the studio to be useful and comfortable in all the ways we needed - terrific appliances and kitchen set-up, good food and bathroom supplies, beach gear, etc. We did find the lack of anyone to welcome, ask questions, and make a connection to be different from our other 3 VRBO locations, since the owner lives on another island and we saw the "house-sitter" only by chance for 20 seconds.

Owner's Response: Glad you had a nice stay at the Studio, we try to anticipate the needs of our guests as much as possible. Our VRBO website has great insight on places to go, places to dine, etc. Not sure if you accessed the site, as it is a wealth of information regarding the Big Island. I know we spoke via phone and e-mail before your trip. I am always available for guests by simply contacting me. Aloha & mahalo, Gary Penir

A Great Get-away

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time staying at Gary's Studio from Mar 5 - 15, 2016. The location is excellent - less than a 10-minute drive to downtown Kona - it is not that far away but the slow moving traffic takes that long to get there. The studio is spacious; just like what you see as presented on the web. The kitchen is well-stocked. We were very impressed by the full list of beach accessories at the Studio, and we used the beach chairs, beach mats, and the cooler every time we went to the beach. There is no direct access to the waters right across the road because of the private residences there, but the public beach access is within walking distance either you walk north or south along Alii Drive. There is a guidebook "Hawaii The Big Island Revealed" by the small table at the entrance. Save yourself $20 of buying it at the airport and just take it with you wherever you go; it has every bit of info you need to enjoy your adventure on the Big Island.

We love snorkeling and this studio is just a 5-minute drive to the famous Kahalu'u Snorkeling Beach (we had the cooler and the beach chairs etc therefore we chose to drive). We saw more than 15 kinds of species the first time and the second time we went back we came across a turtle! We literally saved ourselves USD150 per person for the snorkeling experience instead of going on a boat trip. Gary was very responsive to our questions. We did not see the wifi password info on the small table beside the main entrance. When we text him he responded immediately.

One small suggestion: it would be nice if the 'day bed' is replaced by a futon couch that can be pulled out as a double bed (for the potential 3rd & 4th guests). The set up of the 'day bed' is not entirely comfortable for us to sit on it when we watched TV at night. But again we did not spend much time watching TV because we were busy exploring this place of paradise. Thanks Gary for hosting us and we indeed had a great get-away!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. We are planning to swap out the daybed for a sofa, just have not found the right sofa bed yet. There is public access to all beaches in the state of Hawaii so anyone can walk between the houses across the street and enjoy the beach/ocean. Glad you two enjoyed your vacation. Aloha & mahalo, Gary Penir
