About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

On 44 acres of woodland, with a third of a mile of river frontage on the East Branch of the designated Wild and Scenic Westfield River, this log house offers a real opportunity to relax. A cathedral window overlooks the river and a deck to watch the humming birds completes the setting. The master bedroom upstairs has an en-suite bathroom and there is a minstrel gallery above the open plan living and dining area. Craftsmen used local hard woods for the hand built kitchen and breakfast bar and the floors.

We built the property on a whim, but now discover that Cummington has everything. Northampton, Stockbridge, the Hancock Shaker Village, Tanglewood, the Clarke museum in Williamstown, the Mass MOCA and the Shopping Mall at Lee are readily accessible.

The area has black bear, beavers and, occasionally, a moose on Main Street. There is a trailcam available for the use of guests who wish to explore the night life (which includes racoon, deer, fox, and other surprise visitors). The adjacent land is a Massachussets Wildlife Management Area and the State also stocks the river.

We do not have TV but the local Bryant Library stocks a selection of DVDs and good books. NPR and WiFi are available,

The adjacent garage has an efficiency apartment overhead, occupied by an unobtrusive couple who overseee bed linen, cleaning and other guest needs. A welcome pack to your specification will be provided. They will also cater if required.

Google Earth shows at Lat:42.493142 Lon: -72.973293, but I cannot promise that the island to the left will not have been further excavated by the beavers - on the other hand they may have created an excellent swimming hole!

I am afraid that, however short your intended visit, the need to complete administrative formalities usually requires at least two weeks notice if you wish to rent the house.

Why Stephen Mathewson chose Berkshires

This house was built by us as a site for relaxation - woodland walks and wild life viewing and only rented out when we realised that, living in England, we do not get to the States as often as we might.

What makes this house unique

While it is reasonably close to Tanglewood, our main joy is the sightings of the local fauna - laid back beaver, passing otter, and agitated mother black bear with cubs - and the great village atmosphere of West Cummington. The tranquility of the riverside location is enhanced through the cathedral windows.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful vacation at your home this month! We really enjoyed the neighbourhood and explored the Hidden Hills area. We loved relaxing in the house and on the large rock in the river. The local produce was deliciousand we made frequent trips to local blueberry picking. We managed to have one good day at Tanglewood to see Norah Jones perform, but we were rained out of another attempt to see the symphony. We did a number of good hikes in the area and visited Shelburne Falls, Williamstown, Northhampton, Lenox.... You're situated in a wonderful location for exploration. (The “Rs” – Aug 2003)

Peaceful and inspiring

  • 5 of 5

I came to visit with my daughter who lives nearby. I am an artist and my main inspiration comes from the sights and sounds found in nature. I am a city dweller because it is convenient for me as I am nearing my twilight years. I found the cabin in the woods restful and cozy. My daughter and I spent time together talking in the open space and sunlight of the main living area. I also spent time alone, walking the property and sketching the woods and the stream near by. I recommend this property as a get away and a place to contemplate and rejuvenate. Ellen Mills Providence, Rhode Island

All we expected...and much more!

  • 5 of 5

Looked for a long time and finally decided on this property due to it's location amongst nature and in proximity of the wonderful river. It truly is surrounded by all the Berkshires has to offer. We were very comfortable in the house, but at the same time felt very secluded and like we were the only house for miles. Enjoyed the local hiking, the organic, sustainable farms and the wildlife abound. We look forward to a future visit to this wonderful home in the woods, near the water and amidst wildlife.

More than I expected...

  • 5 of 5

This is not just a house, it is a home. Not only are all kitchen items, towels, etc... available, but owner welcomed us with the basic food necessities in the kitchen. Even though there is no cable, we had an excellent time enjoying the peaceful ambiance. The only difficulty we had was that there was some distance to restaurants. BUT, we went food shopping and were able to cook and bake anything we wanted since appliances/ utensils, and spices were available! We can't wait to go back again!

I'm sure you hear this from everyone, but it is a truly wonderful house. We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the area. "The Creamery" is a find and luckily we did not encounter the porcupine. We may very well want to rent from you again and I will tell my friends who might be interested in such a lovely and relaxing retreat.

Thank you!
