Heart of Ocracoke Village
About Kathy Phillips
Our first trip to Ocracoke was the year we met in 1981. We fell in love with each other and the island, never thinking we would someday own a home with the dream of someday living there. Currently working in Raleigh with 2 kids to put through college, those dreams are in the future. So for now we look for folks who also share an appreciation of Ocracoke and would enjoy staying in an island home on a sandy lane that captures times past. Our hope is that you will feel part of this community.
Kathy Phillips purchased this House in 2016
Why Kathy Phillips chose Ocracoke Pony Pens
We bought the home next door, Elsie’s House, in 2011. Built in 1888 it had a deep history and connection to the people who live on the island. The house originally belonged to Myron’s parents, Simon and Sarah Garrish, who had 57 Howard built for him in the 1920s. When it came up for sale, we just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring this house back to life.
What makes this House unique
Enjoy the enlarged front porch and wave to passers by. Look up at the original ceiling just outside the front door and you will see a square cut in the boards. This is the evidence of an escape plan by two terrified occupants of the house in the devastating 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane who took to the attic to escape the rising waters. We decided to raise the house rather than put a hinge and a handle on the old hatch!

Perfect Island Retreat
This newly renovated property was the perfect island retreat. We so enjoyed staying on historic Howard Street where the vibe was quiet and laid back and the village was within walking distance. Myron's Place maintained its historic charm while including thoughtful modern conveniences with a balanced touch of nautical decor. And while the inside was just right, we loved the front porch! Hope to go back next year!
Absolutely perfect house! We will stay again.
Renting process from beginning to end was super easy.
Lux island house and location
What a fun vacation we enjoyed at Myron’s House. The location on historic Howard St is excellent. We were a short bike ride away from everything in the village and the beach by bike was very doable. This is a newly renovated house with special decor touches everywhere. The furniture is top quality and the beds so comfy. Gorgeous bathrooms and love the clever use of stained glass. We had some food allergies so preferred to cook most our own meals. The kitchen was very well provisioned with pots, pans and tools. Again - very high quality. We all enjoyed using the outside shower - very cool experience and the most clean one I’ve seen. I’m short - if this caught your eye - press reserve button. You definitely won’t regret it. Kathy was very responsive and so kind.
Ocracoke at its Finest
The home is perfect for 2 couples or a small family. It is beautifully designed and delightfully appointed. Great kitchen and we cooked fresh fish every evening. The home is within in an easy walk of shops, stores and restaurants but still feels very private. We loved sitting on the front porch in the evening. Overall an excellent experience
The property was so clean and charming! We loved the location as we were able to walk to shops and restaurants. The neighbors were very friendly. We hope to return!
A dream weekend!
We could not have imagined a more wonderful experience on Ocracoke. All aspects of the cottage were tops - communication with Kathy prior to the trip, ease of check-in, location (easy walks to dinner, village and running routes), impeccably clean and a newly remodeled outdoor shower. The natural beauty and history of Ocracoke is remarkable and every bit as memorable as we had hoped. I consider it lucky that we found Kathy's cottage which made the whole trip so enjoyable and special! Highly recommended all-around!
