Review #2272615 Charming Casa

JUST ONE OF 22 5-STAR REVIEWS: please read the others as well!

My husband and I had a wonderful weekend at Casa Carmen. The place was so charming and interesting since the owner has many of his pieces of art work in the casa.....very clean with wonderful smells and magical lamps. The hosts were so very gracious and welcoming to us and to our dogs. We loved the art studio, the beautiful yard and the walking trail. They have many little sitting areas and unexpected surprises to discover. The upper decks were perfect for watching the sunset with a glass of wine. This was truly a place of enchantment. We would recommend this place to any couple or girls get away.

Skiing, Bicycling, Hiking,Rafting, Ballooning, Fishing, Fine Restaurants, Art Galleries and Museums less than 10 minutes away. Dark skies and millions of stars keep you company at night!

It is most preferable and efficient if you call for availability, questions, assistance and clarifications. In this manner, you receive the highest and most personalized levels of attention to your needs. Further, negotiation of rates and discounts offered only to they who call. I am available seven days a week from 8:00 AM until 11:00 PM.

Please call Pat Woodall Fine Art Gallery in Taos for more information. You can reach Pat or Carmen there!

Casa Carmen may be best described as the Sunrise and the Sunset House. You are bathed continually with our immense New Mexico sun and artist's light. The 360 degree views are stunning, inspirational, beckoning to mind and spirit. A wonderful feature of the home is the incredible interior and exterior lighting. For the property, a DVD has been produced.

The home was built by the owners of adobe and hand-hewn logs. It is a stunning two level guest house of 1200 square feet. An interior spiral stair case connects the levels. There is also a wide exterior stair.

The second level is designed as a parlor for conversation, sleeping, entertainment area, also with a table that seats four. There are two fantastic decks: The sunrise deck and the sunset deck. Each are spacious and wonderful for dining, entertaining, conversation, and of course viewing the expanse of Taos Valley and Taos Mountain nearby. You can almost touch the mountains!

The first level consists of wonderful sunroom, a bedroom, the country kitchen, the living room with dining area, and a full bath. The first level has south and east facing portals (covered porches) with comfortable outdoor seating.

A new hot tub is yours to enjoy outdoors in sun or starlight. The views are wonderful from its location!

Located in a grove of Aspens and Evergreens and surrounded by 150 acres of private land, raised flower beds and flagstone paths wander through the trees and expansive yard.

The home is decorated with the paintings of Pat Woodall, the owner, and other prominent Taos artists. A delightful collection of folk art also adorns the home. The grounds and gardens have been designed by Carmen Woodall. Many outdoor delights await you with inviting comfort for your leisure. The outdoor lounging areas also have chimineas and a brazier for evening fires beneath the star-filled New Mexico night skies. Out here, there exists no light, noise, or visual pollution.

You are a few minutes from the charming village of Arroyo Seco offering fine restaurants, shops, location of the famous Taos Cow, and a infamous local tavern!! It is only a 10 minute drive to the historic Taos Plaza and a 20 minute drive to Taos Ski Valley for world-class skiing or Hiking, Fishing, Horseback Riding,or Bicycling where Lance Armstrong trains.

Pat and Carmen are nearby to assist you when called upon. Being the charming hosts they are, they will welcome you into their beautiful home for viewing, conversations, refreshments, and provide information about the entire area. They have been residents of Taos for twenty six years. In short, you have a knowledgeable concierge. If you need an easel, one is provided!

Casa Carmen is perfect for one to six guests. A wonderful experience offering authenticity, spaciousness, incredible views, and superb guest services. Pat also offers painting lessons if interested. The guest house is ideal for artists, writers, they who desire rare travel opportunities and being close to outdoor activities. You are, as well, only a short drive from everything a world-renowned art and literary colony offers.

To discover the wonderful features and amazing setting of this home, and to negotiate, it is always best to CALL. I am available to assist you with your questions, travel needs, and complete details related to Casa Carmen and Taos.

Please ring number listed in the first paragraph.

Why Pat or Carmen Woodall chose Arroyo Seco

We built it To Be Natural and Within the Grove of Trees and Gardens! It was built by Pat Woodall over the course of five years with attention to every detail! Mortice, notch and tendon construction of joinery with exposed Douglas Fir Beams, sided Spruce logs and passive solar thermopane Windows on all sides make the views spectacular in all directions. Solar curtains on every window and skylight make it warm and cozy and tie in to the decor. The decor is very special. White Duve covers on each bed, flannel sheets in the winter over dual control heating mattress covers make getting out of bed a little tough but when you do, oh my!

Vibrant paintings adorn the walls between the windows and a 3'x5' simulated fireplace with heated blower is located on the wall upstairs in the large parlor bedroom with a Queen Bed and Single Bed. The heat on the ground floor is hot water radiant heat under character grade Hickory floors in the living room and kitchen coupled with heated marble tile in the bedroom and full bath. Sock feet are warm and welcome. Two open decks await you upstairs, the Sunset and Sunrise Decks and a outside wooden staircase provides access to the downstairs covered wraparound portal with comfortable seating, gas grill and a walkway of a few feet to the 4 person Hot Tub. A 10 foot double door opens onto the wraparound porch and into the Solar Entry and Living Room of the Casa Carmen. Lots of parking and easy access are other amenities.

What makes this chalet unique

A House for you and your family! Privacy, Quiet, Close to everything, Wooded, with Water and So Very Unique! Elegance, Rustic Charm, Warmth, Accessibility to walkways, grove of Aspens, Pinon, Fruit Orchard and Running Water Acequia are just a few!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Built by hand by the owners, Pat and Carmen, this beautiful 2 story cottage cabin was originally Pat’s art studio. It has lovingly been transformed into a very special get-away with artistic and eclectic flair yet all the special touches of home including comfortable beds with nice linens, an abundance of towels, lovely soaps & shampoo, & for those who cook, a nicely appointed kitchen. Carmen warmly greeted us with her southern hospitality and totally surprised us with an incredible home cooked meal, cucumber and lemon infused water, fresh fruit, chocolates, and a bottle of wine. Her thoughtfulness and attention to detail were sincerely appreciated following a long drive and an altitude adjustment! (She even had a cool mist humidifier—the most unique and beautiful hanging one we’ve ever seen.) Be sure to take some time to enjoy the lovely paintings which grace the cabin’s walls. Many of these were done by Pat and framed by Carmen.

We travelled to New Mexico to escape the 100+ degree temperatures of our home. Having lived in the Arroyo Seco area for 30+ years, Pat was especially helpful by providing us with day drive instructions with special places to stop along the way. At the end of the day, one of the highlights of our visit was escaping to the spacious upstairs master suite featuring 2 balconies with views! The Taos Mountain views and a gentle breeze rustling through the aspen leaves made this our favorite spot to relax with a glass of wine following a day of exploring. In the evening hours, the mountain views were magically transformed into a sky filled with stars, solar lanterns lighting the aspens, and the distant howling of coyotes. We loved it!! Our many thanks to both Pat and Carmen for creating such a wonderful place to stay!!

Blissful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of four and this home was perfect for us. We travel over the holidays as a general rule due to a family tragedy a few years ago that makes staying home difficult. It is important for us to be in peaceful environments. This place is tailor-made for reflection. Its beauty is serene to the soul. My two teen boys loved it as well. Pat and Carmen are thoughtful hosts. They made us feel like family.

A Luxurious Bohemian Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My husband, chihuahua and I recently had the privelage to stay at the Casa Carmen and I still can't believe how fortunate we were to happen upon this little gem. The Casa Carmen is an experience itself. This two-story bohemian paradise is full of light, positive energy and eye candy. Our hosts, Pat and Carmen Woodall are exceptionally friendly and cool people who went above and beyond to ensure we had an awesome stay.

Pat, a talented local artist, built this guest house in honor of his wife and two children completely from recycled materials and the results are spectacular. Inside you will find walls covered in BEAUTIFUL works of art from ceiling to floor, tons of windows, a full kitchen with all of the amenities and VERY COMFORTABLE (feather) beds. There is a pearlescent magenta staircase that changes color in the light, two second-story decks (one for sunset, one for sunrise), soft fluffy rugs, an awesome stereo system, creative and inviting lighting, whimsical lamps, huge pots of succulent cacti, warm wooden floors and relaxing scents that make you feel right at home.

Upon our arrival Carmen had our refrigerator stocked with a delicious organic cold dinner, dessert, and multiple fruit infused beverages. There were also breakfast supplies and every accessory imaginable to prepare dinner for your family. She even suprised us one morning with an amazing hot gourmet breakfast.

The outside property is equally as delightful with lots of room to roam. There are hammocks, beautiful flower gardens, a greenhouse, a trampoline, and multiple sitting areas to enjoy the beautiful views. Everything is tastefully decorated with fun artistic flair. At night you can relax in the hot tub and see the milkyway and a million stars. Find your way back to the cabin by way of Chinese lanterns glowing with soft blue light. These guys are like the fairy Godparents of magical settings!

Hopefully you will have the opportunity to visit Pat's art studio in Taos. If you are interested in art, this place is for you. He even took the time to explain some of his processes and favorites materials and mediums. His art is the jam, so don't be suprised if you're tempted to take a treasure home for yourself.

Long story short, stay here because it's crazy amazing. Have fun!

Perfect place for family!

  • 5 of 5

Casa Carmen was perfect for our short family ski getaway. The home was beautiful and the hosts were tremendous. Our family of 5 had plenty of room and felt very comfortable in the home. The kids loved the yard/garden/hot tub and we loved the location (perfectly situated between Taos and the ski valley). Pat and Carmen have built a lovely home and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. As a bonus, the house is adorned with Pat's art...and he's very very talented. We've used VRBO a lot in the last 7-8 yrs and this was by far our favorite place/experience. Don't hesitate to book this place.

The memories you all take is why we built this lovely place and why it is the gift that just keeps giving for us! One of the rewards of hosting families and couples! Thank you so much! Pat and Carmen

Fall in love ~ with the weather, Pat's art and Casa Carmen

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed at the Casa Carmen during other seasons and fall this year was wonderful. The leaves were changing, the crispness of fall was in the air, amazing art in the home by Pat and in town, the festivals and the home & hosts were perfect. Pat & Carmen are wonderful hosts and always have the home with everything you'll need to enjoy and relax. I love that we can bring our two dogs and they love the walks and the fenced in backyard is very appreciated. During our stay it was cool in the evenings so the wall fireplace upstairs was just what was needed to knock the chill out of the room. The sunrises and sunsets from the decks are spectacular. Close enough to everything but far enough away to enjoy the tranquility that the Arroyo Seco area offers.

Spectacular Location, Charm, and Hosts

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I and my parents stayed for three nights over Presidents Day Weekend and greatly enjoyed our stay. We learned that Pat built the home by hand many years ago which adds to the wonderfully fun character of the entire property. The location was ideal for us with Taos Ski Valley located about 15 minutes from the front door and Taos Village located about 10 to 15 minutes the other direction. The Hot Tub under the stars was very relaxing after skiing all day and Carmen is a great chef who left us some delicious snacks and treats to enjoy daily. We will most definitely return.

P.S. Pat Woodall is a well known local artist with a showroom in downtown Taos full of great art to take a look at. Ask anyone around town if they know Pat and the answer is almost always yes. Great folks.
