Bella casa Lucchese

  • 5 of 5

The first stop on any tour of Lucca has to stop on the route of the city walls. Powerful structure dating from the 16th and 17th century.

This great work of military engineering, with walls and ramparts is now a public park and has a unique view. Particularly striking is the old town, which has retained its medieval appearance. Composed of narrow streets and squares typical dominated by stone towers, tower-houses and brick houses with porches. Among the most typical streets, Via Fillungo is located near the axis Romano, surrounded by palaces and ancient towers like the famous Clock Tower and the Torre Guinigi. Here is concentrated most dell'edifici medieval built by the ancient noble families Lucchesi. Equally noteworthy and

particular importance in religious architecture are: the Cathedral of St. Martin, with its imposing facade and interior rich in precious works of art; The Cathedral Museum which houses paintings, sculptures and liturgical furnishings; the Church of San Michele in Foro, a unique example of architecture, and the magnificent Basilica of San Frediano.

Excellent examples of civil architecture are: Villa Guinigi (15th century), the National Museum displays archaeological collections of Etruscan and Roman and numerous paintings; ICT Palazzo Mansi furnished invaluable; and the 17th century Palazzo Moriconi - Pfanner, a magnificent example of Baroque Lucchese, surrounded by spectacular gardens. In the city of the composer Giacomo Puccini is the birthplace that has been converted into a museum showcasing memorabilia and documents of the master.

The countryside around Lucca offers the opportunity to visit the beautiful villas built in the late 16th century and in the mid-nineteenth, to serve as country houses and holiday homes for the nobility, all set in picturesque parks. Among these Villa Torrigiani with its characteristic garden and Villa Mansi, a beautifully restored 16th century with frescoed rooms and a large garden designed by Filippo Juvarra.

Among the historical sites Altopascio was of great importance in the Middle Ages due to the location along the Via Francigena. The city maintains buildings in Romanesque style, the churches and the famous bell tower of the 13th century.

From the slopes of the Apuan Alps you go down to the National Park of Migliarino-San Rossore - Massaciuccoli, the beautiful coast of Versilia, very attractive tourist destination, thanks to its beautiful scenery, rich in plant life and fascinating places. To see the romantic Torre del Lago Puccini, where you can see the house-museum of Giacomo Puccini; in this place the master found the inspiration for his masterpiece Madame Butterfly.

Other points tourist sites are within the Versilia Viareggio, famous for its carnival, for its beaches and nightlife; the elegant Forte dei Marmi; Pietrasanta and its rich artistic heritage; Camaiore with its Romanesque architecture.
