Historic Vacation Rental Home on Lake Flower in Saranac Lake

Bedrooms 4
Half Baths1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 7-9 depending on season)

McKenzie View is a lovingly restored historic home on Lake Flower in the village of Saranac Lake in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. The house retains original family furnishings and antiques and is heated and available year round.

Relax in a large but cozy living room with a wood burning fireplace and a splendid view of lake and mountains. Test your culinary skills in a roomy, fully equipped kitchen. Adjacent to the kitchen is a sun-filled breakfast room and a formal dining room that seats eight.

Wake up to the sunrise over the lake and mountains in a queen-sized bed in the master suite with a twin bed in an adjoining room. Two other bedrooms have double beds. All beds are dressed with seasonal Pottery Barn linens. Two twin beds are available in summer in the quiet second floor unheated porch that backs a wooded hillside. There is a full bath with shower on the second floor, a full bath with claw-foot tub on the third floor, and a half bath on the first floor.

Just minutes from Lake Placid and Olympic sites, and twenty miles from Whiteface Mountain, the village retains much of its historic charm, with its numerous cure cottages, active Main Street, and century-old traditions such as the Winter Carnival in February. Spectacular fireworks can be seen across the lake from the house on Indenpence Day, New Year's Eve, and twice during Winter Carnival. Main Street shops and the farmers market are a five-minute walk along the lake from the house.

The Visitors Interpretative Center in nearby Paul Smiths, the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, and the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake provide opportunities to learn more about the Adirondacks. Annual events in the region include the Ironman Triathlon, Empire State Games, the I Love New York horse shows, Lake Placid Film Forum, and Plein Air Art Fesitval.

The third-generation owner has a graduate degree in building conservation from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is lovingly preserving the century-old house. Enjoy your stay on a historic street lined with many other lovely older homes. We are sure you will enjoy the house and region as much the Roberson family has!

About Suzanne

My father was raised in this home, which has been in our family for a century, and I spent every summer since childhood, nourishing my life-long love of the Adirondacks. It was always my desire to live in the house one day, and vacation rentals allow me to share this lovely home with others while defraying expenses. My father is thrilled that I am actively restoring it, bit by bit. Architectural and artistic skills seem to run in my family: my great-uncle was the prominent Adirondack architect William Distin, my cousin is an architectural project manager, my great-grandfather and brother are professional photographers, and my undergraduate degree is in painting and drawing. My graduate degree in building conservation from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has fostered enduring connections in the preservation community and I have come to love Saranac Lake as my second home. Combined with my first graduate degree in library science, guests appreciate the fine library of local authors, fiction, and Adirondack literature. The kitchen may be my favorite room: spacious yet warm in its antiquity, I know you'll enjoy preparing meals for your family as much as I have.

Suzanne purchased this house in 1982

Why Suzanne chose Saranac Lake

This home has been in my family for a century, and it was only natural for me to want to preserve the family connection to the Adirondacks. Saranac Lake continues to be a vibrant community of involved citizens and has become an arts mecca in the Adirondacks.

What makes this house unique

The house is a mere five-minute walk to Main Street and a short drive to many outdoor and cultural activities.

Love staying here!

  • 5 of 5

I have been staying in this lovely 3 story home for the past nine years. I bring in a group of friends, we are all artists and we come for a plein air event every year. We look forward to our time together and spending it here, we have come to love this home! It is spacious, charming, well equipped & the location is so convenient! We also love that we have access to the private dock and the lake. We all plan on returning for as many years as we can! Over the years we have seen and appreciated the updates and upkeep that has gone into this home. I definitely recommend this property!

Great Location with everything you need.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay during the holidays. Having a fireplace during the minus temps made our stay warm and homey. Plus we didn’t have to leave the warmth and comfort of the living room to see all of the first nights fireworks. Suzanne had all the items we needed including a crock pot which we used a number of days while we were out skiing, tubing etc during the day.

Great location with Lake Placid and all other ski resorts within a 20 minute drive.

Great house, Convenient Location

  • 5 of 5

This is our second year staying over Columbus Day Weekend, and this is a perfect house for us. On a quiet road, across a bit of water from the town. Downtown is an easy walk, as is the Saturday farmer's market. Easy drives to many trail-heads and canoe launches. The front porch is cozy and the house fits a lot of folks. There are a ton of great ADK related books and magazines to browse through. Suzanne is easy to work with, and very accommodating.

Very clean, great location with lovely view, well-equipped.

Clearly, the owner cares very much for this property. Long family history which is obvious. Loved the area. Enjoyed canoeing, hiking, paddleboarding, and visiting nearby Lake Placid.

Owner's Response: We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay and got to sample what the Adirondacks and Saranac Lake have to offer. We hope you'll come back soon! There's so much to do, no matter the season, and quiet days spent reading on the porch or in front of the fire are always nice, too!

Nice property!

  • 4 of 5

My family of 7 had a great time staying at McKenzie View. While it is an older house, with both charms and quirks, it is quite spacious and very well appointed. The kitchen has everything needed for both general cooking and baking, which was great for us. The best feature of the house is it's location. We have rented several lake houses in the past and have generally found that lake access means being quite removed from walkable destinations. At McKenzie View the small concession of needing to cross a not-too-busy road to access the lake is offset by the ability to easily walk into the town of Saranac Lake, which offers coffee shops, restaurants, grocery shopping, and points of interest including the Laboratory Museum and the hiking trail up Baker Mountain. An excellent vacation spot!
