About Shelagh Whitney

In 1990 we built our 'dream cabin' in Hayesville, NC and drove north from Atlanta almost every weekend until our full time move the summer of 2001. Leaving the craziness of the city, but staying within easy driving range of its energy, turned out to be the perfect move for us. With so many friends visiting and wanting a 'piece of quiet' themselves, it was on to real estate in 2002 where I spend most of my time today... Except when Mike and I are at home, still loving our 'dream cabin.'

Shelagh Whitney purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Shelagh Whitney chose Lake Chatuge

'Fernleaf Cottage' was actually bought as our future retirement spot. Although we do love our cabin Mike and I both grew up around the Great Lakes and couldn't see ourselves without a water view when we truly do retire to the porch! Being a Realtor I always have my eye out for properties that are a great value, with a great location and view! There was just something about this property that grabbed me the second I walked in and I knew that we had to have it in our future.

What makes this cottage unique

While you are, literally, only 2 or 3 minutes to the marina, restaurants, the movies, shopping and town when you are on that back porch you feel like light years from civilization! That's what so many of our guests have said that one of them wants to relax, read and hang out while the other wants to go, go, go... NOW! Everything is so close they can do both but get back together on a moments notice, AND, when you are so relaxed that you forgot the hamburger buns, you're out and back in no time at all! Plus, the cottage is very cozy as it was decorated for kick back enjoyment but NOT from yard sales!

Guestbook comments from the owner

You certainly do have one of the best rental cottages that we've rented! Very comfortable. Didn't need any A/C and the heat at night was a blessing. So many good restaurants, shops and artists. The people are so friendly and eager to share their knowledge. Thank you Shelagh for always being just a phone call away and for sharing all the wonderful treasures on your shelves. Great library!

JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED!

  • 5 of 5

After several months of uncertainty about my health, I was elated to get the opportunity to rejuvenate at Fernleaf Cottage. The cottage was exactly as described. It was warm, cozy, inviting, and for me, healing. The view from the quaint screened porch and deck was spectacular, even in the midst of the haze of the horrible forest fires. The cottage was spotless, well supplied, and everything was in excellent working order.

I appreciated that the cottage was well located. Everything, from the grocery store (I love Ingles) to the restaurants, shops and attractions was convenient. Even a trip the the Great Smoky Mountain National Park can easlly be accomplished in a day. Trips to Helen, GA were a breeze (check out the Deer Lodge for a great steak that overlaps the edges of a platter), as were Bell Mountain, Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Vogel State Park, numerous waterfalls, and the beautiful drive along Hwy 19.

My friend and I had a terrific time staying at relaxing Fernleaf Cottage. It will definitely be a part of any future trips I make to the Hiawassee area. I will whole-heartedly recommend it the my friends and family (the ones I trust to maintain and respect it).

One can certainly tell that Shelagh loves her property. She is readily available if you need anything and she respects your privacy while you're there. I really appreciate that!

Thank you, Shelagh, for the opportunity to stay in what I truly consider a home away from home.

Perfect Lakeside Cozy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time staying here, but definitely will not be the last! The cottage was exactly what we were looking for. An adorable mountain cottage with gorgeous views. We have a Golden Retriever and his favorite place was relaxing on the deck, mine was hiking nearby and coming back to the cottage to relax by the fireplace. The kitchen was well equipt and was nice to have a grocery store close by. We ate out a few times and our favorite was The Copper Door in Hayesville, NC (only about 15 mins away). I didn't want our trip to end. This cottage felt like a home away from home. Thank you, Shelagh!

Just Like Coming Home

  • 5 of 5

This was our third visit to this wonderful cottage. Clean, comfortable, well equipped, close to stores, golf courses, but far enough to be private. Shelagh, as always great and immediately available if (though not likely) you would need her. Rocking chairs in front of the fire with a book, glass of wine and great company - what more could you ask for. The screened porch for breakfast looking towards the lake, pretty great as well. Thanks again Shelagh for making this cottage available. We will see you next year.

Hiawassee Charmer

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was very charming and beautifully decorated. It had everything needed for our stay.

The porch was so peaceful but the view to the lake is obstructed by trees.

However you can see glimpses of it and hear the boats going by. The mountains in the distance add to the beauty.

We recommend this rental highly and the owners are wonderful to work with.

Fernleaf Cottage is delightful.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to post a review! I am glad you found everything you wanted and/or needed in the cottage and that you enjoyed the porch too! I'm afraid that we don't own all of the trees so we are thrilled when we hear from our guests about the sounds of the leaves rustling in the wind, the love of NO AC by our Florida visitors due to the summer shade or we catch the gorgeous colors of the 100+ year old oak ...hope you will think of us again, you were wonderful guests...barely knew you were there! Best, Shelagh and Mike

Perfect for relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Fernleaf Cottage is absolutely perfect in every way. Shelagh has thought of everything thing that you might need for a wonderful relaxing stay. While at the cottage you felt like you were away from it all however you were just minutes from town if you needed anything. Great hiking and mountain biking trails are also just minutes away. Fernleaf was perfect for our family of four and we loved that we could bring our four-legged family member as well. My (and my lab's) favorite spot was relaxing on the screened in porch in the morning & evenings. The only thing that my boys wished for was a dvd player to watch a movie after we tired them out hiking and biking all day. Will definitely look at coming back to stay again!

Cozy cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Fernleaf Cottage at the end of July 2016. The cottage was very nice and clean, had everything we needed for a pleasant stay. We were doing an event at the fairgrounds the cottage was within 2 miles which worked out great. Would definitely stay here again. Thanks for a awesome work vacation!
