About Shelagh Whitney

In 1990 we built our 'dream cabin' in Hayesville, NC and drove north from Atlanta almost every weekend until our full time move the summer of 2001. Leaving the craziness of the city, but staying within easy driving range of its energy, turned out to be the perfect move for us. With so many friends visiting and wanting a 'piece of quiet' themselves, it was on to real estate in 2002 where I spend most of my time today... Except when Mike and I are at home, still loving our 'dream cabin.'

Shelagh Whitney purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Shelagh Whitney chose Hiawassee

'Fernleaf Cottage' was actually bought as our future retirement spot. Although we do love our cabin Mike and I both grew up around the Great Lakes and couldn't see ourselves without a water view when we truly do retire to the porch! Being a Realtor I always have my eye out for properties that are a great value, with a great location and view! There was just something about this property that grabbed me the second I walked in and I knew that we had to have it in our future.

What makes this cottage unique

While you are, literally, only 2 or 3 minutes to the marina, restaurants, the movies, shopping and town when you are on that back porch you feel like light years from civilization! That's what so many of our guests have said that one of them wants to relax, read and hang out while the other wants to go, go, go... NOW! Everything is so close they can do both but get back together on a moments notice, AND, when you are so relaxed that you forgot the hamburger buns, you're out and back in no time at all! Plus, the cottage is very cozy as it was decorated for kick back enjoyment but NOT from yard sales!

Guestbook comments from the owner

You certainly do have one of the best rental cottages that we've rented! Very comfortable. Didn't need any A/C and the heat at night was a blessing. So many good restaurants, shops and artists. The people are so friendly and eager to share their knowledge. Thank you Shelagh for always being just a phone call away and for sharing all the wonderful treasures on your shelves. Great library!

Nestled in the Trees Above Lake Chatuge! Great Rates @ Fernleaf Cottage!

Love the screen porch. Very nicely decorated and clean. Super relaxing. Well equipped.

My husband and I love to spend time at Lake Chatuge. The water is beautiful with mountains surrounding it. Fern Leaf cottage is close to everything. The Mountain View is nice now, but we can’t wait until Fall, and especially when some of the leaves have fallen. The view will be incredible. You really feel nestled into the woods with the location of the porch. It will be at the top of our list of places to stay at Lake Chatuge.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your nice review! You were a joy to work with and I only wish that we could have gotten you that later check out so, guess you'll need to stay longer next time! We are hoping our 'tree guy' gets there this week to open back up the 'window of lake view' that we have when the leaves are full, but you are right, spring and fall are INCREDIBLE! Hope to see you back on the calendar for it! Best, Shelagh

Literally nestled in the trees!

  • 3 of 5

Shelagh was responsive when contacted. The house is well appointed and a comfortable place to relax, read or watch TV. The large mattress was not the most comfortable (a bit hard), but different people have different preferences. As for the screened porch, it is an enjoyable place to sit. The only thing missing was the view of the mountains and the lake. That part was a big disappointment. Shelagh stated, after our visit, that the tree trimmers were coming soon. In the Fall, it won't matter because the leaves will have fallen, but ask if the trees are trimmed if you want a view any other time. Also, if you want to walk, there is a long partially unpaved section before you get down to the paved circle at the lake. Great views from there! We would have given it 5 stars if we had experienced the view from the porch that was shown in the pictures online.

Owner's Response: Dear Bill, The trees have been trimmed! We would love to have you back, thank you for taking such great care of the cottage! Spring and fall are obviously the full view, the new lead photo shows what we have now AND, DirecTV has finally got us updated to High Def on all 3 sets...football season with views! Shelagh

Simple but complete for an anniversary week celebration

  • 5 of 5

For two people (and two dogs), the cottage is perfect for a short getaway in N. Georgia with access to the lake nearby. Unfortunately, the trees at the bottom of the picture have grown to the point that the view of the lake from the cottage is mostly obscured, but because of the cottage's location, you see lake and mountain view anytime you venture out. The layout of the cottage was perfect for out needs. The screened back porch (runs the length of the back of the cottage) was the perfect place to start and end the day. Two late afternoons had rain move thru, one with heavy rain. With the wide overhang of roof over the sides of the porch, it was no problem to stay on the porch and enjoy the cool air, and the sound and smell of the fresh rain. Location is great for restaurants (HIGHLY recommend Brothers at Willow Ranch), sight seeing and some shopping. But if you want to simply get away, shutdown, kickback, read, you need to consider this cottage. WIFI worked great, so no problems staying in touch with things in the world or back home when necessary. Per my FitBit and my IPhone, the cottage is 13 floors or 130 feet above the northern point of Ridgecrest Road. That point is approximately 2000 steps from the cottage. We'd walk the dogs down to that point and back up twice a day, so if you want some exercise while staying there, bring some good walkers (lots of gravel--particularly on a stretch that is at least 10 degrees grade). The walk is 70-80% in shade. So, the cottage was PERFECT for two people that wanted quiet, but also needed a place close to town and restaurants, and allowed us to share the time with our two fur babies (about 25 lbs. each).

Where was the view?

  • 3 of 5

No dammed lake!

Well, actually, there is a dammed lake out there somewhere. It’s just that it can’t be seen from the screened in porch of Long Leaf Cottage. We had to rent a boat for four hours to see the “dammed lake”. My wife, an amateur musician, actually wrote a song for the occasion, entitled, “No dammed Lake.”

The cottage was wonderful! Well-equipped and comfortable. It provided plenty of space so that I could listen to my jazz on the porch (via my Spotify account) while my wife watched the news on one of the three tv’s.

Don’t get me wrong. We enjoyed our stay, but I had selected this venue based on the pictures. Problem is that either those pictures were taken when this late 1940’s, cement brick cottage was built, or at least was well before all the trees have overwhelmed the view. Seriously, there is absolutely no lake view from this cottage. If that's what you're looking for, like us, you will be disappointed.

Despite our disappointment that there is no view (other than trees), there are many pluses. This isn’t an elegant choice, but the basics make for a very comfortable stay, including:

• Two small bedrooms, one with two comfortable twin beds, and another with a comfortable king bed and TV.

• The cottage was clean and well-maintained.

• 1.5 baths. Just the basics, but they served us well.

• Separate living areas, including a large, screened in porch, a dining and sitting room, that opens to the kitchen and a large, separate living area that was obviously added.

• The TV’s are small and not hooked up for high definition. But we brought our Apple TV box, which worked well and provided access over the high-speed internet to favorites on Apple TV, Netflix and Amazon. (Those choices won't be available unless you provide your own box.)

• There are lots of puzzles and books, plus a few games.

• The kitchen is well-equipped. We cooked in for breakfast and dinners and didn’t want for any amenities.

• We successfully used the outdoor, gas grill three times.

I have two suggestions for the owner: (1) remove the promotional pictures that show the wonderful view. They do not accurately describe the property. (2) Buy three HDMI cables, ask Satellite TV to provide all three receivers with HDMI ports, and then attach the outputs of the satellite boxes to the HDMI inputs on the TVs. This is a $15 fix that will significantly improve the picture resolution.

Owner's Response: Dear Peter, I didn't want to respond until I had accomplished all that I could so... the trees have been trimmed and the new photo is the real deal! Spring and fall are obviously the full view AND, DirecTV has finally got us updated to High Def on all 3 sets...football season with views! We would love to have you back, thank you for taking such great care of the cottage! Shelagh PS We tried Roku in the past but spent more time teaching guests how to use it than was possible for our work schedules! Thank you for the time you took to review, we appreciate it and always try to listen, and act!

Clean house, comfortable. Rough Road to house. Missing hand towels, and no extra bath towels. Porch lovely but no view of lake. Worked for our SHORT visit.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed the porch and, as our lead states, we're "Nestled in the Trees" with a fabulous Lake and Mountain View until mid May and beginning again in mid September.... otherwise it's cool breezes in a treehouse setting. I'm sorry that you didn't find any hand towels, they should have been hanging in the half bath and I will talk to the cleaning crew about that! As far as bath towels, we provide one set per guest and have a washer/dryer which, however, does not get nail polish out, if you know what I mean...

Wonderful quiet get a way.

The home was spacious, clean and quiet. All rooms were comfortable. The screened in porch had birds entertaining us all day with their songs. I would not hesitate to return.
