This five-hundred-year-old cottage was entirely renovated in 2014, while retaining many original features such as exposed roof-beams, some stone interior walls, eviers (old kitchen sinks - not now in use!), two cellars with bread ovens (not operational). There is a small garden and a small terrace leading off the main dining-room. Downstairs there is a large open-plan dining-room/kitchen, with an island unit containing two under-counter refrigerators. The gas hob and electric oven are in a former fireplace. There is a dishwasher in the kitchen and a washing-machine and freezer in one of the cellars. The kitchen window looks out onto a countryside view to the North of the town. The countryside to the North is less than 100m from the cottage. From the kitchen there are a few steps down to a separate living-room with two comfortable sofas and a fireplace with a wood-burner. From the kitchen area stairs lead up to the main bedroom on the left, which has a double bed and a window overlooking the garden. The ceiling is angled so the wardrobe is on the landing. The main bedroom and shower-room have sliding doors. The shower-room has a walk-in shower, wash-basin, mirror and toilet, and a Velux window. Past another small landing, separated from the rest of the upstairs by a door, is the second bedroom, which has a double bed and a small window looking out over the countryside. The hot-water system is an electric cylinder. All necessary crockery, cutlery, glassware, table-linen and small appliances such as kettle, toaster, blender are provided. In winter, heating is provided by individual programmable electric storage-type heaters in each room. (There will be an extra charge for this facility, if used.)

There is road access to the cottage for unloading purposes, but no dedicated parking. There is free, safe parking nearby (100m) on the main boulevard which encircles the old part of the town. Somewhat confusingly, this road has three different names in different sections.

For weekly lets, towels and sheets are provided. For longer lets, towels and sheets are provided, but tenants are expected to do their own laundry. A weekly cleaning and laundry service is available if required, at an extra charge.

Why Sallie McArthur chose Gourdon

The cottage was the former bakery for the chateau which was at the top of the central hill in Gourdon. Later it was used as a holiday cottage, but the general condition had deteriorated, making renovation essential. We bought the cottage partly as a 'project' and partly to provide additional income. We settled in Gourdon because it has all the amenities which one needs, nearly all of which are within walking distance.

Wonderfully located gite in a pair of old artisan dwellings.

Within great old walled town with restaurants, museum, church, Thursday market days, English guided tours and great supermarkets outside the town. Recently renovated and perfect for one or two couples with great facilities. Very helpful owner and nice courtyard garden.

Fantastic property and location

After a warm welcome and tour of this gorgeous house, we were able to have a cuppa and a bite to eat thanks to some lovely fresh produce left by Sallie. The property had everything we needed and more. The small garden perfect for catching the morning sun with a book and coffee, watching the busy bees on the lavender there. So peaceful.

Gourdon and the surrounding area was just perfect for our family. I loved wandering around the old town and finding out about the history of this place, ending up in one of the lovely restaurants for a coffee, aperitif or meal. The food market on a Saturday and Wednesday is also a feast for the eyes and belly.

The walk up to and the view from the old castle was a favourite, especially at sunset - where my photographer mad teen would make the most of the colours and views. The boulangerie and small mini market were great to walk to for basics - the bigger ones only a short drive.

We visited Gourdon lake to swim, warm and inviting with fun inflatables at one end! - need to pay for those. Theres another lake up the road in Groléjac with a beach 2€ each tho. Sarlat-la-Canéda, Rocamadour and Roque-Gageac were stunning towns worth visiting. The Gouffre de Padirac caves were just amazing - and highlight of our trip -The best ones to see - worth booking in advance online tho. We also hired a canoe from Groléjac bridge and headed downstream for 15k - hard work but so tranquil with lovely places to stop off for packed lunch - there was a shorter and longer option.

Did not want to leave Gourdon and will miss it very much. Thank you Sallie for making our stay a real home away from home - will certainly come back and do the jigsaw puzzles again!

Dream vacation at perfect cottage.

The location in Gourdon was super. It was a nice central location convenient to most towns in the Dordogne Region. It also had a train station in town that connected direct to Paris so one of our daughters could travel round trip from Paris to Gourdon and back. We also took the train on another line to Lourdes via Toulouse. We put 5,000 kilometers on our Rental car seeing a dozen chateaux and 7 gorgeous Gardens and 63 villages. It was our 50th Anniversary and we enjoyed our 3 month celebration. We rented the perfect size cottage for two months. It had plenty of room for the two of us and even had a garden that we worked on with the owners permission. It had a refrigerator, stove, dish washer and microwave and all the dishes and weekly linens we needed. Sallie and Ian were so helpful in providing all the necessary information to make our stay easy and enjoyable. It certainly was a dream vacation and the best two months we could have wished for. We highly recommend this Gourdon cottage for anyone wanting to enjoy thd culture and beauty of Southwest France (the Dordogne Region).

An outstanding property in a charming location.

Having " Gited " in France for many years this must be one of the best! The quality of the building fabric and decoration is outstanding with all the equipment you could wish for. It was like being allowed to use a much loved and cared for home. The owners live locally and met us on arrival and were charming and very helpful.We found it easy to drive up to to unload but some might find the 2M wide road a challenge! That said there is plenty of free parking within 150m .The views are a treat and it was wonderful to see the countryside in different guises each day. It sits within the charming town and therefore it is easy to walk around without traffic problems. Gourdon is a very pleasant town , with plenty of resturants and shops but not overburdened with tourists, no Sarlat here! It's very easy to get around the area with plenty to see and do. There is a train station which will wisk you away to Toulouse ,Brieve, Cahors etc or even bring you in to holiday without a car. It was so enjoyable that we are going to try and visit again.

We loved the cottage and we loved Gourdon

The cottage has everything you need to make your stay a comfortable and enjoyable one.

The position is great and there are loads of wonderful places to visit within a short drive.

The views from the property are wonderful and we also loved just walking around Gourdon itself.

There were all sorts of little touches that made our stay just that little bit nicer (like a selection of toiletries, basic groceries and things like salt and sugar already in the cottage).

Sally and Ian were lovely and very helpful.

I dont think anyone would be disappointed to stay here.

One word of warning (and its only because not everyone is OK on hills and steps) its on a very small lane with no parking, which would be very difficult to drive up. So its a short steep slope and steps from where you park the car. But its worth the little climb because its lovely.

A fantastic holiday.

A fantastic cottage, perfect for the four of us. It is so ideally located in the gorgeous Gourdon and just what we needed. Within walking distance to a lovely selection of restaurants or BBQ's in the garden, what ever we wanted. We also took advantage of the train station, which was only a ten minute walk from the cottage and travelled to Cahors. A must see on market day. We enjoyed a stunning breakfast in the square, pastries from the boulangerie whilst enjoying our coffee's and watching the market come to life. The market itself is full of everything you could ever need and so exciting for us to experience.

Gourdon is centrally placed for many Tourist destinations: Rocamadour; La Roque-Gageac; Beynac-Cazenac; Castelnaud military museum; Marqueyssac Gardens, Eyrignac Gardens; Sarlat-la-Caneda; Les Eyzies etc. It is on the SNCF train line from Paris to Toulouse, and has frequent trains to Brive, Cahors and Toulouse. Cahors is the main town in the Lot and has an interesting old section, the Pont Valentre, which is an old fortified bridge. There is kayaking on the nearby Dordogne river, and Hire of motor launches on a navigable stretch of the Lot river, from the hilltop village of St Cirq-Lapopie to Puy l'Eveque, which is in the wine-growing region of Cahors. Cahors and Gourdon have bustling weekly markets. Hot-air balloon trips over the Dordogne river valley are available in summer. Other airports used by local people are the Air France hub Toulouse-Blagnac (167km), as well as Bergerac and Rodez. Gourdon has a bathing lake and a fishing lake.
