Our home has been called an eco-lodge with a "secret garden" watered entirely by re-cyled grey water. Designed by Japanese-American architects, Casa Chepito has amazing views not only from its balcony and terraces but also from inside the house. Enjoy coffee or drinks under the "tejada" on the roof with views to the mountains of Guanajuato. Fronted with a huge, eclectic garden, it is just 5-7 blocks from the jardin yet is a quiet and safe hideaway. It has an open-air yet private Japanese bath, a well equipped, colorfully tiled kitchen, fireplaces, purified water system, high speed internet and cable TV, as well as the two front suspended mountain bikes for use by guests. Eat fruit from the mature orange, avocado or pomegrante trees; pick herbs from the kitchen garden; enjoy meals cooked by Ofelia. (Please ask me specifically about location on Chepito not Sto. Domingo).
The smaller bedroom has a boveda ceiling done by a master craftsman with a covered terrace ideal for breakfast. There is a new covered 'outside room' on the roof terrace, where you can watch vermillion fly catchers playing in the giant bamboo, with views of town and the valley to the mountains of Guanajuato beyond. There is a garden with fruit trees in back, and off-street parking. The gardener/handy-man and housekeeper come three times a week.
Located in the centro, mid-way up the hill from the jardin (6 blocks), this two bedroom, two bath home is the perfect place to relax, read a book while dozing in a hammock underneath the mesquite tree, or simply do nothing but watch birds overhead on their way to the Jardin Botanico, or the fish as they feed in the pila. In town yet on a quiet street, enjoy the many restaurants and shops of San Miguel, or take the bikes out for a spin on the miles of single track.
From Casa Chepito it's ten minutes on foot down to the main square, 15 minutes up to the JARDIN BOTANICO, Mexico's largest botanical garden, and by bike, minutes away from more than 800 miles of some of the best mountain biking trails in Mexico. Adjacent to the landmark orchid farm, there is a heated pool at the gym just across the arroyo.
As a happy renter recently commented:
"'Casa Chepito' is a country home in the city. (You really can walk downtown in five minutes, but once inside the property's walls, you are in a 'Secret Garden' kind of world.) On every level, it opens 'wide to the view', and it may well be the best view in San Miguel. The huge garden is terraced down from the house to the street (no traffic) and has 3-story high bamboos that will astonish. One of Casa Chepito's best points is a big, comfortable eat-in kitchen with windows to the view. Those who like a 'natural' setting, will love 'Casa Chepito'."

The owners are a photographer/writer team who purchased the raw land to build Casa Chepito in the late '80s. They have worked for many national magazines including the New York Times, LA Times Travel & Leisure and Smithsonian, as well as the 'MTV Guide To Mexico.' After traveling all over Mexico they are very happy to get back to San Miguel.
ann purchased this house in 1989
As journalists we have traveled throughout Mexico but decided San Miguel Allende was our favorite place because of its culture, history, people, natural beauty and climate. The historical monument in the high desert is amazingly beautiful, reminding many of Tuscany; but with the special warmth of the Mexican people. San Miguel somehow has a perfect symbiotic meld between the foreign and Mexican communities. Although a small town, as an art colony it is more sophisticated than many big cities, with a wide choice of art and language schools, many types of restaurants, a world class theater, and great shopping. And it is high enough in elevation that it escapes the heat and humidity of the coasts.
Although you may want to spend most of your time in town, the beauty of the countryside surrounding San Miguel can really be appreciated by bike. Because there are miles of dirt roads and single track connecting to town the mountain bike possibilities are endless. There are two front-suspended bikes at Casa Chepito for guests to use. The Jardin Botanico, a 60 acre garden bordering the spectacular gorge above town, can also be readily accessed for hiking from Casa Chepito. Free entrance & discount to special events with membership card, included in rental. The garden at the house is also a tranquil way to watch birds, read, or just relax in a hammock.
We have been enjoying this beautiful home for snippets of time for many years and have made beautiful memories here. This gracious home is a wonderful sight for the eyes and ears. One can truly relax in hues of pale greens and blues accented with vibrant deep reds.
One can view San Miguel de Allende from several balconies around the house or even better, from the rooftop.
A really wonderful part of the artistically built home is that there are delicious herbs in the garden available for cooking, like basil, rosemary, mint, and others. We enjoy seeing beautiful flowers, hummingbirds, other types of birds, and butterflies.
We are about to leave and cannot wait to return to this idyllic home.
This house with "Mexican character" (an array of Mexican tiles and brightly painted walls) has one of the best views and natural gardens in town. Imagine four terraces from which to sun, eat, read or "just be". The kitchen is one of its best features... A great gathering place in which to cook or entertain. And yes it's a bit of a hike up the hill (but it's only half way up the hill), but it's only ten minutes to the Jardin (town center) and the big market. The owners are on site and ever so nice , but not obtrusive. I also ditto Criste T and Preston's comments.
We stayed at Casa Chepito for a month mid January-February 2015. It was wonderful and we enjoyed the house and the great views. The roof terrace is a great place to have coffee in the morning and a great place to bask in the sun throughout the day. There are numerous porches and balconies and the balcony off the living room has bougainvillea growing up to the edge. You will never get as close to hummingbirds in your life. At one point I was wearing a red shirt and I felt like they were mistaking me for a flower. Quite spectacular. The location of the property is quite fine as it is out of the downtown which can be noisy and smoggy during high traffic hours. The walk down really is only 7-10 minutes and the walk up a bit more arduous. We rarely felt the need for a cab, we just paced ourselves and walked slowly until we adjusted to the altitude and the climb. We walked to the botanical gardens and the Soriana grocery. There is no need for a car. The cobblestones are brutal and at times become boulders so do not bring your dainty sandals. I had day hikers which are a bit sturdier than running shoes and they were perfect. Jeff was a great host and we enjoyed chatting with him. The house is well equipped for cooking, sleeping, relaxing etc.
We have to "ditto" Maggie R's description of Casa Chepito. Beautiful, fun house in San Miguel. As Ann and Jeff recommended, we did not rent a car and saved money because it would have been difficult to park in town. The hill is substantial (hence the magnificent view) with the cobblestones so although it took maybe 10 minutes to walk to the town center we usually opted to take a taxi home. We love the view, the church bells, the kitchen, the comfortable beds, the books in the library; everything! (Also Bobbi the cat.) Thanks to Jeff, Ann and Bobbi for a great stay.
We just got back from a wonderful stay at this house. The rooftop terrace is where we spent most of our time! The house is comfortable and a very easy downhill walk to town. Walking back up the hill wasnt always so easy after a day of sightseeing , but you can easily jump in a cab that costs 30 pesos . The garden is full of flowers and beautiful trees, the kids had a lot of fun exploring and discovering things. The owner of this property made the process easy and couldnt have been more helpful! thank you.
My friend and I recently returned from a wonderful visit to Casa Chepito. The house and gardens are beautiful. The views are stunning. The rental process was easy and friendly. It was a perfect vacation. I could go on and on about the wonders of this very special house. It was an ideal vacation in a Mexican paradise. Highest recommendation.
Single-track heaven for Mountain Biking, 60 acre Cactus Garden 5 minutes away, and two mountain bikes are provided with the house.
