About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Our home has been called an eco-lodge with a "secret garden" watered entirely by re-cycled grey water. Designed by Japanese-American architects, Casa Chepito has amazing views not only from its balcony and terraces but also from inside the house. Enjoy coffee or drinks under the "tejado" on the roof with views to the mountains of Guanajuato. Fronted with a huge, eclectic garden, it is just 5-7 blocks from the Jardin yet is a quiet and safe hideaway. It has an open-air yet private Japanese bath, a well equipped, colorfully tiled kitchen, fireplaces, purified water system, high speed internet and cable TV, as well as the two front suspended mountain bikes for use by guests. Eat fruit from the mature orange and avocado trees; pick herbs from the kitchen garden. A cook is available. (Please ask me specifically about location).

The smaller bedroom has a boveda ceiling done by a master craftsman with a covered terrace ideal for breakfast. There is a new covered 'outside room' on the roof terrace, where you can watch vermillion fly catchers playing in the giant bamboo, with views of town and the valley to the mountains of Guanajuato beyond. There is a garden with fruit trees in back, and off-street parking. The gardener/handy-man and housekeeper come three times a week.

Located in the centro, mid-way up the hill from the jardin (6 blocks), this two bedroom, two bath home is the perfect place to relax, read a book while dozing in a hammock underneath the mesquite tree, or simply do nothing but watch birds overhead on their way to the Jardin Botanico, or the fish as they feed in the pila. In town yet on a quiet street, enjoy the many restaurants and shops of San Miguel, or take the bikes out for a spin on the miles of single track.

From Casa Chepito it's ten minutes on foot down to the main square, 15 minutes up to the JARDIN BOTANICO, Mexico's largest botanical garden, and by bike, minutes away from more than 800 miles of some of the best mountain biking trails in Mexico. Adjacent to the landmark orchid farm, there is a heated pool at the gym just across the arroyo.

As a happy renter recently commented:

"'Casa Chepito' is a country home in the city. (You really can walk downtown in five minutes, but once inside the property's walls, you are in a 'Secret Garden' kind of world.) On every level, it opens 'wide to the view', and it may well be the best view in San Miguel. The huge garden is terraced down from the house to the street (no traffic) and has 3-story high bamboos that will astonish. One of Casa Chepito's best points is a big, comfortable eat-in kitchen with windows to the view. Those who like a 'natural' setting, will love 'Casa Chepito'."

About ann

The owners are a photographer/writer team who purchased the raw land to build Casa Chepito in the late '80s. They have worked for many national magazines including the New York Times, LA Times Travel & Leisure and Smithsonian, as well as the 'MTV Guide To Mexico.' After traveling all over Mexico they are very happy to get back to San Miguel.

ann purchased this house in 1989

Why ann chose Zona Centro

As journalists we have traveled throughout Mexico but decided San Miguel Allende was our favorite place because of its culture, history, people, natural beauty and climate. The historical monument in the high desert is amazingly beautiful, reminding many of Tuscany; but with the special warmth of the Mexican people. San Miguel somehow has a perfect symbiotic meld between the foreign and Mexican communities. Although a small town, as an art colony it is more sophisticated than many big cities, with a wide choice of art and language schools, many types of restaurants, a world class theater, and great shopping. And it is high enough in elevation that it escapes the heat and humidity of the coasts.

What makes this house unique

Although you may want to spend most of your time in town, the beauty of the countryside surrounding San Miguel can really be appreciated by bike. Because there are miles of dirt roads and single track connecting to town the mountain bike possibilities are endless. There are two front-suspended bikes at Casa Chepito for guests to use. The Jardin Botanico, a 60 acre garden bordering the spectacular gorge above town, can also be readily accessed for hiking from Casa Chepito. Free entrance & discount to special events with membership card, included in rental. The garden at the house is also a tranquil way to watch birds, read, or just relax in a hammock.

Heavenly haven

  • 5 of 5

This home is, in my opinion, perfect. The decor is vibrant, warm and artistic, it's an easy and beautiful walk into town (several different paths) and the garden is abundant and a sweet oasis that made me into quite a homebody during our stay. I loved how the house itself had its own magic and was far enough away from the more enclosed streets in town, but close enough to pop into town everyday. Sprawling beautiful views of San Miguel and the garden.Several terraces, wooden doors and a beautiful outdoor shower/bath was a refreshing dose of the elements as opposed to our current suburban life in the states. Our children attended a Spanish immersion camp in town 10 minutes from the home. Cab rides were only 40 to 50 pesos when we weren't looking for the healthy trip up the hills. Park Benito Juarez is wonderful, the parroquia was beautiful for breakfast and inexpensive, the market is worth visiting and there's so many more little hidden bakeries and shops. A natural pace and a joyful spirit pervades San Miguel.I just can't say enough. We are considering moving here in the future and I hope we find a gem like Ann and Jeff and if not I'd stay nowhere else.

We had a wonderful stay. An entire afternoon into evening on the rooftop deck was definitely a favorite part of our stay. There is an outdoor shower option & the rooms are all lovely! We walked to town at least once, if not thrice, per day. It takes about 20 mins. Bring your comfort shoes! The hosts are extremely nice & welcoming & the grounds are stunning. We would definitely stay again!

The Great Escape!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just spent two weeks at Casa Chepito with my daughter and her husband, and we had a wonderful time. The house has ample space both indoors and out so we could all be there together, or do our own thing. As others have described, the walk to town is easy and we took a variety to different routes / to explore the colorful narrow streets. In town, I found a piano at Belles Artes to practice on and my wife found a 25-meter lap pool just a short walk from the house. Using the pool costs $6 per day. Mostly, we took advantage of the usual attractions of SMA -- concerts, plays, great restaurants, day trips or just sitting in the jardin to people-watch. Ann and Jeff had excellent advice about where to eat and shop and what musicians to look out for. One night, they helped us arrange a dinner for 9 people, with chicken mole made by an excellent local cook. The cost was ridiculously cheap. They also turned us onto a fabulous Cuban pianist who has played with the Buena Vista Social Club. The only caveat is that Casa Chepito would not be the best choice for someone with mobility issues since there are a lot of stairs. We didn't mind since we like to get exercise while on vacation, but it could be a challenge for others. Of course that is true of all of SMA, which is famous for its historic and attractive -- but challenging -- cobblestone streets.

Owner's Response: It was wonderful to host this lively and inquisitive family. Very happy that John could make good use of the piano and that everyone enjoyed the various concerts and cultural events in San Miguel. Thanks to Laura, Jeff is now using the pool across the arroyo on a more regular basis. We were also happy that Jessie and her husband made such good use of the kitchen; we love it when the house is appreciated. Hope to see you again.
