A leisurely stroll through artistic etched glass doors welcome you into the spacious great room of Ohana Hale, one of Puako's premiere oceanfront homes. Stunning Brazilian teak hardwood floors throughout the home, combined with top-of-the-line appliances and Hawaiiana décor make this an ideal island vacation home. Plentiful oceanside sliders not only bring the sunlight and the sea breezes to you, but open up the tropical view for your pleasure. Cleverly designed to afford maximum privacy, this Puako home has three ocean side suites, each with a full bath and air conditioning.
Not only does this home provide a spacious, modern setting but the loving purchase of comfortable and beautiful furnishings give it a feel of home-away-from-home. The kitchen is a chef's dream with every small appliance and handy gadget a cook could need. My favorite spot is the large oceanside covered lanai, where a good book, a tall cool beverage, and the sights and sounds of the sea are all the companions one could desire. For those who must work, high-speed wireless Internet access is provided as well as a fax machine and work space, just off the kitchen. The office also has a trundle bed that is perfect for two youngsters. GE and TAX tax 103-438-3360-01.

We are so grateful to have spent our first trip to Hawaii on Puako Beach. I can’t imagine a more perfect location or a more beautiful and comfortable home. Nine members of my family were easily accommodated in three master suites each with private and stunning bathrooms. This house is equipped with everything and anything -including a first aid kit and a basket of sunscreen! Each bed was king size- a rarity in rental homes. The kitchen is abundantly equipped with top of the line appliances and cookware. We grilled fish every night (purchased from Da Fish House) and never went out to eat. Island Gourmet is a great grocery store a few miles down the road where we were able to purchase everything we needed. The farmers markets nearby were an adventure
in wild and wonderful local produce and delicious homemade treats.
My husband and I rented top of the line bikes ($20 per day) at a local bike shop and rode in Puako Beach and on the large shoulder of the main road (which is part of the Iron Man route).
The house is situated on a quiet residential street which feels very private. The lanai is furnished with several seating areas and a dining table and chairs. And it is just steps from the ocean where the breaching whales were a daily spectacle! The snorkeling right in front of the house was spectacular.
We slept at night with our windows open listening to the lapping of the waves. To call this vacation retreat “chill” is an understatement!
We feel very fortunate to have been able to spend a week at this beautiful home.
Truly a peaceful stay in paradise!
This is my first time to visit the big island in May, and our stay at this lovely Puako home did not disappoint! We were able to swim, snorkel, and converse with the sea turtles that make this little bay their home. The house has everything we need for cooking our meals, including enjoying pupus on the beach while watching sunset. The furnishings are both beautiful and comfortable, allowing for plenty of private and public space, though the beachfront lanai is indeed my favorite hang out! Morning walks along Puako Beach road to the beach trail at Paniau (another amazing snorkel beach) allow for views that are spectacular. Puako is a fabulous location for easy day trips to visit different parts of the island, from Waimea and Havi to Hilo for farmers markets and waterfall hikes. Great home for family vacation or a friends' getaway: can't wait for our return visit!
5 star house and location
This was our first trip to Hawaii. My wife and I were vacationing with our three kids (10,13,15) in late February/early March. We stayed at this house in Puako for 6 days and then we stayed on the east side of the island for 2 days. Our conclusion was that Puako was the best place on the entire island to stay. We got a great sense of local Hawaiian culture staying where we did. Though we didn't have great weather - it was better than all other parts of the Big Island. Great access to Beach 69 and Hapuna Beach. We visited lots of beaches and Beach 69 was by far our favorite. Location was also good for amenities - "da Fish House" was 10 minutes away and had fresh fish daily. Foodland was also 10 minutes away for all other groceries. The Puako General Store was 1 mile away for quick things. The real estate manager for this home (2 Papayas) is next to the general store and they were very helpful to us all week long. It was great to have access to their advice and suggestions all week!
This house was really excellent. Plenty of privacy for everyone. Our 15 year old stayed in the office on the pullout couch (bed). The other kids had kings. We stayed in the master. All three bedrooms had windows toward the ocean and so we could hear the sound of waves crashing all night, which was pretty cool. We saw plenty of whales from the lanai for the first two days and then no more the last 4. Very good snorkeling directly out from the house. It made sense for us to buy our own snorkel gear for the week. We took beach chairs out on the rocks and enjoyed the view/reading. Grill worked great. Good coffee grinder and fresh local beans were provided. Kitchen was loaded. Sunsets were excellent, though we only saw 2.
Weather was so-so. Of the 6 days in Puako, 5 were cloudy and 2 were actually rainy. This house provided good access to the north coast for hiking and viewing waterfalls. Be aware, like all other homes on the Big Island, there is no AC. Several nights of sleep were pretty sticky. This house's location also provided excellent access for safe running. Puako beach road is a very quiet neighborhood road (25 mph), very flat, and is 3 miles in length - so for vacation running was more than adequate.
My husband and I had a wonderful, relaxing week at this beautiful home in Puako with our daughter and her best friend. This home was everything we hoped for...spacious and very comfortable with ocean breezes that kept the home pleasantly cool at night. We spent lots of time on the covered lanai that spans the front of the home and in the tide pools out front. The girls snorkeled almost every day...saw lots of turtles and many beautiful fish! And of course, watching for whales created all sorts of excitement!
We cooked a lot of our meals at the house(everything you could possibly need was there) but did enjoy great breakfasts at Paniolos and Lilikovs in Waimea. Would also recommend The Seafood Grill in Kawaihae and Roys at the Kings Shops at the Waikoloa Resort. We bought wonderful, fresh produce at the Farmers market in Waimea, and fresh fish at the fish market in Kawaihae.
The gals at 2Papayas made the whole rental process a pleasant one. We travel to Hawaii about every three years...We will definitely stay at this home on a future trip!
Just what the doctor ordered!
Although I've enjoyed a few trips to Hawaii over the years, the week spent in this amazing home was exceptional. The house was open, clean, and beautifully furnished; the location a perfect distance to farmer's markets, sandy beaches, and other lovely sights/shopping. Whale watching and turtle sighting from the lanai is hard to beat, especially followed by vivid and consistent sunsets. Bedtime always promised the lullaby of the ocean while drifting off in very comfortable beds.
This home is equipped with just about everything. Cooking our fresh produce and fish was simple with such a well-stocked kitchen - there wasn't a utensil missing!
We will certainly book this home again, bringing good friends and taking home great memories! A giant "Thank You" to 2 Papayas and the property owners! Awesome!!
The house is perfect. The house was actually larger and more spacious than we had expected, especially with the huge en suites with every bedroom. The home is beautifully furnished and immaculately clean, and the interior stayed nice and cool even through the heat of the day. And the wooden floors are just spectacular.
The location is perfect, tucked away from the main road and the big resorts, giving it more of a community feel. You are only a few minutes away from some of the best beaches on the island and a couple of nice resorts if you want to go out for a nice meal. The ocean is right at your doorstep, and we snorkeled out front - we saw turtles every single day. We also rented a couple of kayaks for a couple of days - and they deliver right to your door.
Honestly, the owners/managers have thought of everything and anticipated your every need. We really appreciated being greeted by a friendly staff member who ensured we settled in OK and answered any questions. There was even a generous gift basket, which was a nice touch.
If I could give 6 stars I would - it is that good!
Dating back to ancient times, Puako was a fishing village that, until the 1950s, was accessible only by boat or by the Ala Kaha Kai (the ancient “shoreline trail” that is now partially restored as a National Historic Trail). One of Hawaii’s largest petroglyph fields is nearby. Still a small beach community—fewer than 200 homes along a single road just 2 ½ miles long—Puako is blessed with a consistently sunny and gentle climate. An eclectic mix of residents, snowbirds and vacationers, the kids you see on bikes and the surfers at Paniau probably live here. As you cross paths with them, stop and “talk story” at the General Store, an informal community center as well as a convenient resource for supplies. Life in Puako—year-round and short-term—is relaxed, very relaxed, but never boring. Rimmed by a protected marine preserve, the Puako reef offers endless sights for snorkeling, SCUBA diving, kayaking, swimming and tide pool wading. Join the “honu” (protected sea turtles—please enjoy them at a safe distance) for a swim or follow their lead and bask in the sun nearby. You’ll have a great vantage point for watching the wintertime display of whales and their young during their calving time in our warm waters. If all this isn’t exciting enough, you can walk to the Mauna Lani or Fairmont Orchid Hotels for a sunset beverage, or visit the nearby Shops at Mauna Lani or the King’s Shops and Queen’s Marketplace just down the highway for shopping and a variety of restaurants and galleries. On the way upcountry to Waimea, home of Parker Ranch and the “paniolos” (cowboys), a stop at Kawaihae Harbor offers additional restaurants, galleries, and a fish market. Golfers have numerous options, and adventurers may head for the summit of Mauna Kea, the active volcano Kilauea or a trip to the Zipline in Kapa’au.
