History of The Wheeler-Farley House:
Be swept back in time to when “Timber was King” when you stay at The Wheeler-Farley House…
Purchased in 1929 by our great-grandparents, Joseph Allen and Rachel Wheeler Farley, The Wheeler-Farley House is located on land that was once owned by our great-great grandfather, Nelson Platt Wheeler. His company, Wheeler & Dusenbury, was a major player in the timber industry during the 1800s through the early 1900s. At one time, Wheeler & Dusenbury owned 55,000 acres in this area of Pennsylvania now known as “The Pennsylvania Wilds”. Just about all of the land was sold or donated and is now incorporated into The Allegheny National Forest. As fate would have it, The Wheeler-Farley House came up for sale in the spring of 2006 after being out of the family since 1978. We are so excited to have it back and hope that you will enjoy the land our ancestors loved, as we do, when you stay at The Wheeler-Farley House.
While there, look at pictures of days gone by, read about the logging camps of the area and the adventures on The Allegheny River, rafting the logs downstream. Visit an “Old Growth Forest” at Hearts Content, once a Wheeler & Dusenbury logging camp and now part of The Allegheny National Forest.
Referring to The Wheeler-Farley House, the son of the former owner said, “Your ancestors sure knew what they were doing, they picked the prettiest place on The Allegheny River.” We whole-heartedly agree with him and now want to share this beautiful land with you.
The Wheeler-Farley House is in The Allegheny National Forest in Forest County, 10 miles north of Tionesta and 4.5 miles south of Tidioute on Route 62.

My family had a wonderful time at the Wheeler-Farley House! In my opinion it is even better than the description, there was plenty of room for all of my family to relax and enjoy themselves. We loved relaxing on the the balconies, benches above the river, boulders, and at the fire pit! It was fun cooking on the large bbq grill and we enjoyed 2 dinners at the lovely great room dining table that was large enough to accommondate all of us. My husband and I worked off the dinners by running on a beautiful river trail in Tidioute.(The entrance is across the bridge and south) My nephew brought his kayak and fishing poles. We also went golfing at Hunter's Station Golf Club(beautiful views). And, last but not least since we were very lucky to have wonderful weather we rented a pontoon boat at the Allegheny Reservoir and it was very fun! Thank you for sharing your home with us!
Just back from a great long weekend at the Wheeler-Farley Home. What a perfect location on the Allegheny River! The home was very inviting. Our group of 14 gals from a local exercise group had a lot of fun exploring the area, including several different hikes (including The Sherman Lighthouse), shopping, and a trip on the railroad train. The home accommodated our group very well and we each had our space, if needed. Very impressed with the quality of the furnishings, the dishes/glassware, linens, and overall condition of this home. Also it was very clean, and everything was in good working order. It is easy to see that the owners love this property. The foliage in the area was at its peak, and there was a snap in the air when we went on our outings. There was plenty to do in the area, although a car is needed. Enjoyed driving through the little towns. A bat sanctuary was located within walking distance to the south of the property and included a big barn for the 'pups' as well as a Bat condo. Good electronic communication with the owner...highly recommend this property!
This is the place you always hoped to find: quiet and calm, right on the river, with the chance to sit on the huge rocks and look at eagles flying overhead. Kayaking from this spot to the bridge is 5 miles, or you can put in upstream, at Tidioute, and paddle 'home' for lunch. Wherever you go, the views are so beautiful...
And the house is roomy, clean, with a fire ring, great decks for reading. Truly a find.
Thanks to the owners for making it available. Our two vacations at the Wheeler-Farley house have been our family's best.
