Halifax Chalet Rental Photos and Description

Chalet, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

While this secluded oceanfront chalet in West Pennant is just 25 minutes to the heart of Halifax, it feels like you're a million miles from any city. It's a very secluded old fishing village with lots of incredible outdoor experiences- canoeing, kayaking, hiking, swimming, etc.. The village has only a dozen homes, some of which are occupied only on a seasonal basis.

The newly constructed chalet is 1250 ft2 and has an open concept. It's hard to find a spot in the house without a magnificent view of the ocean- very few man made features in the view. The bow shaped house front is covered with south-facing windows. The downstairs has a small but full bathroom, a bedroom, a living room, dining room and full kitchen with granite counter tops, custom furniture, exotic hardwood floors, copper accents and lots more.

The upstairs is completely open with a claw foot tub, double bed, open bathroom, and great empty loft/sun area that's ideal for yoga, napping, reading, drawing, etc..

If you're looking for privacy, peace of mind, and the ocean, this is the place for you. We've never had an unhappy visitor (given that they showed up happy)!

About The Owner

I'm a teacher at a couple of the local schools. I'm fortunate that my summers are free enough that I have opportunity to rent my home out during the summer.

The Owner purchased this chalet in 2005

Why The Owner chose Nova Scotia

Love at first sight for me. I bought the land a week after I first saw it.

What makes this chalet unique

I contracted the building of the home. After it was taken to roof-tight by the pros, my family and friends gave me tons of help to complete the interior and the cedar shingles on the outside. Since then, I've added decks, paths, a little tree house and a couple of small outbuildings.

This is a truly relaxing, quiet, peaceful and rural spot. The view can't be beat or avoided.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Many thanks for sharing this beautiful place with us. Exactly what we needed after 4 days of long motorcylce rides.

We loved our stay and look forward to returning!

My two children and I stayed at John’s beautiful oceanfront chalet. From the moment we started planning our holiday, John was extremely helpful and accommodating.

The place was easy to find and the drive was absolutely beautiful. Upon arrival we could tell that much care and effort is put into the chalet and landscaping. There is a beautiful view of the ocean and it is completely surrounded by nature. My children loved playing in the little tree house and running through the trails. We spent most of our time exploring the lovely area where the chalet is located. We really enjoyed the wharf down by the ocean. It was a perfect spot to enjoy the sun, have a coffee, a picnic or a glass of wine. My children loved searching for interesting stones and shells beside the wharf. The inside of the chalet is gorgeous and we instantly felt at home. I had asked John for the double bed and he made sure that this was set up and ready for my kids. There were books to read and games that we played in the evening. The main level also has a beautiful sitting area and table overlooking the ocean. We had many great evening suppers watching the ever-changing sky/ocean. There was plenty of space for our luggage and clothes. We enjoyed every moment of our stay. Thank you for sharing your incredible spot with us.

Beautiful home, but not well described/represented online

  • 3 of 5

To start I will note that my husband and I regularly rent homes off VRBO and our experiences are usually great, and I never felt the need to review. Upon arrival I wasn't sure that I actually got to the right place. Mostly because it was very very small, and the beautiful front with windows pictured on the site is not where you enter but the side of the home that faces the water. Upon entering we did note that the home was beautiful nevertheless and well maintained/cleaned. The property was also secluded and gorgeous . The first floor is the living room with TV, fire stove, big open windows, and an open kitchen/ dining area. While the space was combined it was large enough that it was cozy. The small bathroom with shower stall and small children's bedroom was also on the bottom floor.

The loft on the second floor is open to the first floor and completely lacks privacy, which didn't matter for us because it was just me and my husband. The master bed and the secondary bed pictured in the listing are right by each other, not in separate spaces, and a dresser separates the bed and the toilet. The toilet, sink, and bathtub are in the common area with no door/walls, and are visible from the first floor. So if you are staying with children or friends, be aware that they may be able to see you using the bathroom or being intimate form the first level.

Now onto some other issues, it seems that the owners live in the home when it is not being rented. There are clothes hanging in one closet in the master bedroom area, as well as clothes in the bottom drawer of the dresser. There are also children's clothes in the small bedroom downstairs including little girl's underwear, which I don't understand how they were ok with. The clothes being there would not have even been an issue, we were just shocked. We thought at first we were double booked, because these clothes were just left there and not locked/put away. None of this was ever mentioned. There was also food in the fridge which made us think so even more. Another BIG issue was the fact that the water is from a well, which wasn't mentioned. The water is yellow (which indicates sulfur), and smells bad. The shower and tub are stained from the minerals. The water is not drinkable and a 5gal jug is provided for cooking/drinking. For some people this may be a deal breaker. Also, for a week stay we were only provided three scratchy towels and a couple of hand towels, as well as only one tiny bar of soap.

Owner's Response: The chalet is 1274ft and is as described- gorgeous, open and well maintained. If open doesn't suit your taste and 1274 is too small for a week's stay, this is not the place for you. The 2nd double bed is 'mobile', it can go anywhere in the house and is a very comfortable bed. The main bed is queen sized, high end and on a frame upstairs. There is also currently a single bed in the downstairs bedroom- suitable for a child. I'm unsure of how to respond to the entrance comment here, the bank of windows occupies the entire front wall of home to gain a full view of the ocean and surroundings, it's the main attraction of the home, not sure why the side entrance was an issue? Yes, they are correct, my daughter and I live there when it's not rented. We sometimes leave clothes in 2/12 drawers in the dressers; the other 10/12 drawers are empty for your use. The comment about particular items of my daughters is bizarre to me. I am unclear why it was so shocking for her or why she chose to go through the drawer. Of course, I left a key in an otherwise empty closet and this too was also shocking for her not to mention the shock of a lightbulb that expired during their stay- truly shocking. We also leave 1 large empty wardrobe- enough for two suitcases and a couple dozen items to be hung. We have never had any complaint in 10 years about lack of space for guest clothes. There is plenty of room for clothes for a month long stay, let alone a week. Again, I'm left unsure of how this was an issue. However, I could easily have helped them through the difficulty of this had I known it was causing such grief. Please let me know during your stay if you need anything. Without being made aware, I am unable to help. We leave some condiments from previous guests in the fridge, if you'd like to use them, feel free. If not, please ignore them. I do leave plenty of drinking and drinking water for guests. I don't leave soap for the bathroom but do leave dishsoap and cleaners. Don't drink the well water. I am disappointed these guests did not enjoy their stay and found so many shocking discoveries during their stay. I was unable to help them through their very difficult time. Our guest book is chalk full of happy guests, those who arrive happy enjoy themselves immensely. The chalet is about nature, seclusion and family/friends.

We just loved this magical place....and will return.....

  • 5 of 5

There is something magical or very special about this property. The setting is peaceful and very private. The ocean is front and centre – we actually managed to swim just about every day. The huge wharf that is built seemingly right out over the ocean allows for incredible views, wonderful sun tanning (sunscreen in hand…) and romantic meals – breakfast, lunch or dinner. The house itself is clean and with a wall of windows looking towards the ocean offers unforgettable views from virtually every room in the house (my favorite being the view from the Iron Cast Tub ( full of Hot H2O ) on the 2nd floor. The corner store at Sambro offers takeout food, groceries, its own liquor store and friendly locals. The short drive into Halifax was picturesque (we took the Old Sambro route) and meant great restaurants, cultural events and shopping were but 20 minutes by car but seemingly a world away. We loved this place and I am certain we will be staying there again. What a great and affordable getaway.

Wonderful Place

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week at this cottage. It is in a truly beautiful, quiet, secluded location, with gorgeous views and walks all around. It is only 20 minutes from the main motorway system on NS so is also a good base for exploring the area. The owner John is very helpful and accommodating and sorts out any problems instantly. The property and grounds are unique and will offer you an unforgettable experience. Furnishings and equipment are comfortable and homely, and the design of the cottage is quite stunning, with huge windows on two levels looking out over the cove. Pretty much everything you need will be there for you. I would recommend renting a bike and canoe to get the most out of your stay. Highly recommended.

A Lovely Place

  • 5 of 5

This was a nice house in a peaceful setting. It was well appointed and the owner provided everything I needed for a comfortable stay. I very much enjoyed sitting on the deck, watching the sun set, and enjoying the quiet. The outdoor landscaping is natural and yet very artistic. And I loved awaking to an view of the ocean every morning. Even the misty mornings were perfect. One day, I went into town (Halifax) and by the end of the day I was definitely ready to return to the serenity of West Pennant.

Beautiful Place

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed here twice while visiting family in Halifax. We wouldn't stay anywhere else. We have two kids and the land surrounding the cottage is a children's paradise. They really love it there. The best thing about the cottage for us are the windows and the beautiful view. Great place, can't recommend it enough, owner is great to deal with too.
