Overview

About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

We offer a spacious self-catering accommodation perfect for couples in a 17th century historically important townhouse, 'Maison-des-Chevaliers.' Yet almost everything is outside your door; walk to cafés, shops, restaurants, banks, bakeries, pharmacie and a lively and colorful weekly farmer’s market.

Location: Loudun, close to Chinon, Tours area, Centre-Loire Valley (a UNESCO World heritage Site), France, Europe (nearby Chateaux & vineyards of the Loire). The furthest sites are no more than 1.5 to 2 hours away.

Accommodation: Part of our townhouse; upstairs, a superb, tastefully-furnished and well-equipped self-catering apartment : the bedroom has a large high quality bed, firm and new with fine linens, sitting room with comfortable sofa and armchairs, bathroom has a large modern shower and the kitchen is very well-equipped. On request additional sleeping accommodation available in adjacent studio for two adults or single person. There is a Broadband Internet ADSL connection and WiFi in the apartment as well.

You will enjoy the peace of this quiet town situated out of the crowded main roads and easy to park your car, all parkings are free of charge in Loudun. This is why so many guests from around the world have come to stay with us and find it hard to leave. Though the 'Maison-des-Chevaliers' is located in the very center of the old town, it is surprisingly tranquil, guests can relax in the large walled garden or enjoy their meals in the private patio garden.

Loudun is a pleasant town of 8,000 with ancient streets and five officially recognized historic monuments. Visited, but not overly-touristed, it is well situated for visiting the chateaux and vineyards of the region. Loudun is near Chinon, Saumur and Fontevraud (a royally-sponsored abbey complex associated with the Plantagenets). Please go to our website for more information about places to visit.

This old 15th/16th century house has recently undergone a major and thoughtful renovation. We incorporated high end improvements, especially in the kitchen and bathroom, yet preserved the essential original historic features of the house. A sundial that forms an integral part of the restored façade which overlooks the garden, bears the date of 1663. A massive restoration was made at that time by the owner; the Counselor and the Attorney General of the King Louis XIII and the King's Public Prosecutor of Loudun.

To-day, the English-speaking owners (Swedish/French couple who returned to the area after retiring) live in the main part of the house. If you wish, we can offer advice on any aspect of your holiday. Or, if you prefer, we can leave you in peace to explore the area in your own way.

Steps from your car is the apartment's private entrance. Walking up via the tower and the restored 350-years old stone staircase (just 16 steps), you enter the apartment's large and comfortably furnished sitting room and dining area. The fully-equipped kitchen is adjacent. The sitting room and the bedroom each have an exquisite original fireplace and are furnished with antiques. The very large, light and airy bedroom with it's south facing windows overlook the walled garden, the adjoining park and the rooftops of the old town. Guests are welcome to use the garden, garden furniture.

We have strived to provide not just the typical 'self-catering' or 'gîte' minimal accommodations, but to provide something like the 'comforts of home'.

Fabulous experience!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in this wonderful apartment and really enjoyed it. We've stayed in at least 20 VRBO properties and this was the best. The apartment is large, clean, very comfortable, and is equipped with everything you could ever want to make for a successful stay. We need good WiFi access and this apartment provided it. There's plenty of parking next to the house and its location makes it a good base for visiting sites in this area of the Loire.

Loudun is a lovely town and the apartment is very close to restaurants and the wonderful Tuesday and Saturday markets. And I've saved the best for last - Elice and Jean Louis are gracious hosts who take special care of their guests!

Delightfully presented gite

  • 5 of 5

A delightfully peaceful and tastefully appointed gite conveniently situated in the centre of a lovely town, a perfect base to explore the Loire Valley. Well equipped and every detail thoughtfully presented by Elice and Jean-Louis. Definitely a one you want to go back to. Thanks to Elice and Jean-Louise for making us very welcome. Carole and Rolant

Wonderful apartment overlooking garden courtyard

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at Maison des Chevaliers for a week. The apartment is large, spotless, very nicely furnished and decorated, and well-appointed with just about anything you would need. We slept each night with our windows open to the quiet and beautiful courtyard garden below.

Owners Elice and Jean-Louis were wonderful to chat with and very helpful in recommending restaurants, chateaus, and other sites. I will not forget the enjoyable evening we had with them in the garden, sharing some sparkling wine and stories after a long day sightseeing. Elice was also very kind to call for restaurant reservations and even help me sort out a car rental problem.

Loudun is a good base to see the Chinon and Saumur side of Loire Valley. A car, of course, is a necessity. Fortunately, the apartment is right next to a free car park with no trouble at all finding space. We also liked Loudun. It has a lively market on Tuesday and several nice restaurants. If we have the good fortune of being able to spend another week in Loire Valley, we would certainly return to Maison des Chevaliers.

Wonderfully comfortable

  • 5 of 5

This was our first apartment rental in Europe, and we could not have been more pleased. Elice and Jean-Louis are gracious and welcoming hosts who will help out when you need them and respect your privacy when you wish. The apartment overlooks a beautiful garden and is reached via a picturesque spiral staircase. You will find a large foyer -- handy for storing jackets, shoes, luggage, shopping bags -- and then a comfortable living room with a round dining table on one side. Beyond the table is a small kitchen that contains everything you might need for preparing simple meals. The bedroom is as big as the living room, and both rooms enjoy wonderful natural light from the big windows.

The location is convenient for exploring many of the famous Loire chateaux, plus Chinon, Angers, Saumur, and Tours, all lovely cities that offer much to explore. If you enjoy wine tasting, you'll be thrilled with the local offerings.

Our two weeks were perfect!

Simply the Best

  • 5 of 5

This very lovely apartment within a historic townhouse was spacious; exquisitely decorated; supremely comfortable; and looked out over the enclosed garden below where we enjoyed sitting, drinking a glass of wine, taking some meals and also some chats with Elice and Jean-Louise, the incredibly kind and gracious owners/hosts. Located in the centre of the town within 3 minutes walk of the twice weekly markets, boulangeries and restaurants yet still very quiet and peaceful. E and JL shared their time and hospitality generously while taking great care to respect privacy. Loudun proved a great base for exploring the extended Loire area. Wi-fi for work was strong and reliable. After an initial 5 days at the start of August, we were so happy there we returned for 10 more days later in the month. Highly recommended.

Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

We lacked for nothing in this beautiful apartment. Incredibly well equipped with everything one could need, our apartment was spacious and lovely with beautiful antiques. For those of us who need to be connected 24/7, the wi fi was very fast and never let us down. We were close to restaurants in town, yet secluded behind a medieval wall, with a gorgeous garden. The owners, Elice and Jean Louis could not have been more gracious or generous. We loved our week here, and visited many chateaus in the Loire but were always very happy to come “home” every evening.
