Not so great at all....
Hmmm. I was really looking forward to this stay...of all of the apartments I rented for a 5 week stay in Italy, this was, because of its region (amalfi coast) and amenities (pool, view, privacy) and supposed proximity to Ravello. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. A bit too far to walk anywhere, but situated between Ravello and Atrani, it seemed on paper to be a perfect and comfortable place in which to explore the coast, but it falls far far short. Because of the vertical climb to Ravello, it was too far to walk, and likewise, the 20 minute descent to Atrani by foot, was excruciating to ascend. So, we drove everywhere. Not so bad, right? Awful. The extremely narrow road has traffic lights to determine (ha...suggest!) which direction traffic ought to flow, but every time we were on the road a bus or cars charged in the wrong direction. So, let's eat at home, I thought. Hmmm. With one light overhead in the kitchen, which all but obliterated the counter from any light when cooking, it was really difficult to see. With no TV, no radio, no reading light in the almost furnitureless lounge area, impossible to read. Gorgeous terraces, lively green valley views in the day, and the tiny house is surrounded by olives, figs, and lemons, but please owner/manager.....PLEase consider light in the kitchen, a TV, a sofa, a lamp, and a some glasses for the kitchen and knives that CUT something? DEFINITELY not a comfortable place to spend time. (*In fact, they charge EXTRA because I stayed 6 nights and not 7) with zero reason to stay....thats affrontery.
I was happy to leave and put it behind me.
Garofano Cottage is perched above the village of Atrani and just below Ravello, in the middle of the Amalfi Coast, Southern Italy.
This refurbished villa/Residence overlooks the fishing village of Atrani and its beach.
A five-minute drive (4 Km) takes you to the town of Ravello or the nearest shopping area if driving.
From the front gate of the Complex there is about 200 meters of narrow winding road down to the parking area, surrounded by lemon and olive terraces.
The Sita bus stop (bus line Amalfi /Ravello approx every 20 minutes) is situated at 300 m. from the Residence entrance gate.
In alternative from Cottage Garofano there is access to the ancient trail connecting Ravello to Atrani. About 400 steps down to get to Atrani lovely little square surrounded by shops, bars, restaurants with outdoor seating and to the beach front. Once in Atrani it is possible to walk to Amalfi in 10 minutes.
Tips : Usually guests walk down to Atrani / Amalfi and then catch the bus back to the property.
The main bus terminal is Amalfi, where all the buses arrive and depart from here, connecting with Positano, Sorrento, Ravello, Salerno, Naples.
From the docks in Amalfi you will also be able to board ferries and hydrofoils to Positano, Capri, Salerno or Sorrento Coast and Naples, as well as go on mini-cruises for tourists. You must indeed take a tour of the coast from the sea.
If you are fond of archaeology, Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum are easily within reach, between 1 to 2 hours driving distance.
How to get there
There are several ways to get to Atrani Amalfi Coast from Naples Capodichino Airport or Naples / Salerno Train station either by renting a car or by public transport, but it can be a little complicated for first time visitors. Knowing the options and making your travel plans in advance will start your trip to Amalfi Coast off on the right foot.
The property is located 27 km (16 miles) West of Salerno and 60 km (37 miles) South-East of Naples.
From Naples Capodichino Airport to Atrani/Cottage Garofano, is about a 90 minutes drive.
If choosing to arrive at the property using public transport, it would depend on your arrival time at the airport/train station. Visit Amalfi Coast Transport to see which option (Bus or Ferry) will suit you best.
The easiest (and least stressful!) way to reach any destination on the Amalfi Coast from Naples airport or train station is to hire a taxi for a private transfer. While it might seem an extravagant expense, the advantages far outweigh the cost.
Since public transportation on the Amalfi Coast is easy to use and affordable and parking is expensive and very limited, renting a car is not recommended in general.
Request Private car Transfer.
Once at the property you can get around fine without the car as parking in the towns is hard to come by and expensive. Public Buses operate year-around connecting Ravello to Amalfi, where are buses to all the Amalfi Coast villages and Sorrento area. Ferries (from May to October) operate a service between Amalfi - Positano - Sorrento - Capri Island - Naples and Salerno.
