Underbow Cottage is situated inside Dartmoor National Park. It's a former coach house which has been lovingly restored by a local interior designer in 2015 but is still quirky and full of character. 200 metres from Moretonhampstead's centre it is located down an extremely peaceful, private lane. It has ample private parking for two cars, three at a push, as you tumble out the front door. The house has its own first floor, south facing, fenced garden. It is not over looked and has views across to Dartmoor. Up to two well behaved dogs are welcome at no extra charge. There are plenty of circular walks straight from the door. Families and friends will find Underbow warm and inviting. Underbow is located in the centre of the bustling working village of Moretonhampstead. Pubs, restaurants, cafes, tourist information, chemist, supermarket, pottery, hand made shoes-Green Shoes, felt coffin maker-Bella couche, car museum and art gallery-Green Hills and gin distillery-Papillion are all less than 300 metres away but most importantly Dartmoor National Park is on your doorstep. Three en suite bathrooms and a downstairs loo allow everyone privacy. If the sun is out the open air swimming pool is right there. The cottage has everything you could need, a solid wooden kitchen with new large Rangemaster (Aga) cooker(7 ring gas hob/2 fan ovens). The sitting room has wood burning stove to pump out masses of heat and there's full gas central heating radiators in every room so it is lovely and cosy. Every bedroom has its very own en-suite, two of these are shower rooms and one is a bathroom. All the fully made up beds have 100% luxury cotton waffle duvets and white fluffy towels. There is wi fi and four flat screen televisions (two with integrated DVD players) in the house. It has been filled with masses of books, games and toys as well as everything you could need for cooking up a storm in the kitchen! If you fancy eating out there is lots to choose from locally. Why Kimberly chose Moretonhampstead
As a forces family and of no fixed abode there was something about Dartmoor National Park that drew us in. We love the stunning seasonal scenery, outdoor lifestyle and down to earth friendliness of Moretonhampstead. Underbow is comfortable and larger than you might think giving everyone space. Three ensuites really gives extended families and friends their own privacy and is especially helpful if everyone is simultaneously trying to get ready for a wedding!
What makes this Cottage unique
This quiet property benefits from its own private parking for two or three cars right outside the front door. Parking is difficult in Moretonhampstead so this is such a bonus . It also boasts a south facing, first floor garden with views over Dartmoor National Park-a private suntrap which isn't overlooked. Both of these are adjacent to Underbow which is a rarity in Moreton. The parking saves you the hassle and fee of using the pay and display car parks which can quickly get full especially at peak times. The sitting room woodburner, games, masses of toys, books and DVD's are there for your enjoyment. There are lots of wonderful places to visit close by whether it be hills or beaches, unique shops and delis, restaurants and cafes or the city of Exeter.

Very comfortable cottage - excellent location
This is probably one of the best places we have rented, and we usually have two or three long weekends/ weeks away each year in the UK. In some rentals, you are lucky if you get more than the basic four cups, four plates, and one tea towel etc - but this cottage was really well provisioned. Everything you would need for cooking a family meal, loads of cleaning materials, dishwasher tabs, soaps, shower gel etc; plus a really big basket of logs, with kindling wood. Most places give you four logs, and no matches, so this was a real treat! There are loads of games and toys, I'm sure young children would love it here. The bedrooms are very well furnished and comfortable, great shower rooms and bathrooms, and as each bedroom has its own bathroom, each guest has personal space and privacy. The sitting room has two sofas and two comfy chairs, so you can all sprawl in front of the fire with your books. Great walking from the door, easy access to footpaths, and there are fabulous walks across the moors within a few minutes' drive. Plenty of parking, and because this is off the main road, it's also quiet. This cottage sums up everything I love about Dartmoor - no noise, very few people and no street lights, so you can enjoy the stars.
There are several good pubs in Moreton - the Horse has a roaring fire and comfy sofas - and the little Italian bistro, where you take your own wine, is very welcoming, and serves authentic food. The Co-op is open all hours, and sells great bread and croissants for breakfast None of us wanted to leave the cottage, or the village, but we had to get back to work etc. If you book this place, you will be very pleased you did. Thank you Kimberley.
Thank you for your thorough and honest review. You know we would love to have you back.
Christmas week getaway
Fabulous cottage that is well equipped for six whilst staying over Xmas. Lovely pubs and plenty of walks nearby. Very comfortable beds and our two dogs enjoyed the garden. We would definitely recommend and visit again.
Glad you all had a good Christmas at Underbow.
Such a lovely holiday, owner, cottage, location perfect.
From booking the cottage - Kimberley responded immediately and was so helpful. The cottage was exactly as described. So comfortable, immediately felt at home. When we arrived, there was cake left for us - milk in the fridge to make a cup of tea. Salt, pepper, oil, washing up liquid etc was supplied in the kitchen which we find very useful when renting a holiday cottage. The three bedrooms all had en-suites and the beds were comfortable. The weather was really nice - in October - but we HAD (!!) to light the log burner with wood thoughtfully supplied. The cottage was a 5 minute walk from the village where there were pubs, restaurants, fabulous butchers and deli. All in all it was a perfect holiday and can not recommend it enough.
It was our pleasure to have you stay.
Well located, luxurious and spacious family cottage
Beautifully appointed Cottage located in large village with good eating out only walking distance away, supermarket and even a chemist.
Cottage difficult to fault with everything you need for a great holiday.
Owner very quick to respond and local support available if required.
We'll be back!
Thank you. Would be very pleased to welcome you back.
Lovely property in tranquil setting
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Underbow Cottage. The property has been beautifully restored and decorated and everything we could possibly need was provided. The three ensuite bedrooms offer comfort and privacy, and the beds were very comfortable and made up with luxury linens. The living room had plenty of comfortable seating, as did the dining area in the kitchen. The kitchen is very well equipped. The cottage is located down a quiet lane within an easy walk of Moretonhampstead, where we found the grocery store, post office and several pubs. We had a delicious dinner at the Union Inn. The location of the cottage is perfect for exploring Dartmoor with many charming villages within easy driving distance. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend Underbow Cottage.
Glad you all had a lovely stay and look forward to you being able to return.
Perfect cottage in idyllic setting
We loved our stay at Underbow. The cottage was so perfectly set up for guests, especially our children who enjoyed the wonderful toys and DVDs. The rooms were lovely, and the garden was an extra bonus. Also nice to be able to walk to town while also having parking. We enjoyed many fun adventures in Dartmoor and had a great week. Thank you!
Moretonhampstead is an ancient market town situated inside Dartmoor National Park in Devon. It sits in the shelter of hills on three sides and the beautiful Wray Valley on the fourth. No matter which road you take you cannot fail to be impressed by the breathtaking views. The town is about 15 miles from the cathedral city of Exeter and 40 min from the beaches. The town offers visitors opportunities for hiking, cycling, and pony trekking, fishing and just relaxing. There are a variety of cafes, pubs, local shops, tea shops and a wonderful Deli. There's also a supermarket, chemist, tourist information, art gallery and car museum. There's a heated outdoor public swimming pool open during the summer. There are many NT properties close by, one of them being Castle Drogo, only 7 miles away and the miniature pony centre for children is only 5 min away. Bovey Castle and Gidleigh Park are very near for a special treat.
