Cat Island Overview

Untainted by tourism, Cat Island is the sixth-largest island in The Bahamas. The fishhook-shaped island; is some 48 miles long and 1 to 4 miles wide, and lies about 325 miles southeast of Miami. Named after the pirate Arthur Catt, it’s located near the Tropic of Cancer, between Eleuthera and Long Island. It has one of the best climates in The Bahamas, with temperatures in the high 60s during the short winters, rising to the mid-80s in summer, with trade winds making the place even more comfortable. With its pristine virgin beaches, Cat Island is one of the most beautiful islands in The Bahamas, and it is so little visited that it's inexpensive and still feels undiscovered. Many local historians claim that Cat Island residents were the first to see Columbus. The great explorer himself was believed by some to have been welcomed here by the peaceful Arawaks. Beautiful beaches offer an array of water sports. Visitors can go swimming or snorkeling at several places.

About The Owner

Sarah and I love traveling and have been visiting Cat Island for 23 years. I grew up exploring the Out Islands of the Bahamas by boat, and have ventured throughout the islands regularly since 1967. We bought this spectacular beachfront property in the late 1990's, and built the 'Boathouse' in January 2007. We moved back to the USA 7 years ago after living 3+ years in Costa Rica and another 3 years living in Mexico. Both our boys are grown; our youngest (marine biologist) is engaged in Sustainable Fisheries in Portland, Maine, and the oldest is in International Business Development living in California.

Why The Owner chose Bahamas

Cat Island is truly an unspoiled paradise. The people are wonderful and still wave to everyone as they pass. The Boathouse sits on a beautiful white sand beach with water clear as gin. The beach runs for 3 miles, but you can spend days without seeing another soul (read the guest comments). Snorkeling, scuba diving and 'bonefishing on the fly' , island exploring, beach combing, and sunbathing are among other favorites.

Our property is 3 1/4 acres and is surrounded by water on 3 sides. You can launch the kayaks or the canoe behind the house on Pigeon Creek and paddle around to our beach on the ocean. Leslie Kennedy lives on-island and manages the house for us. She will greet you upon your arrival and familiarize you with the house. The Boathouse is professionally cleaned and maintained and Leslie is available to answer any questions you may have or provide assistance with anything you may need.

What makes this house unique

The use of kayaks, canoe and beach cruiser bicycles are included with your stay at the Boathouse. There are 2 single kayaks and a tandem to choose from (they are located either behind the house on the backbay, or on the ocean side tied up at PCBC). The bicycles are located in our garage. You can bike for miles on the sea road or ride on the main road to Bennett Harbor for lunch at Derrick's Conch Shack or Sammy T's.

3-4 times/week Pigeon Cay Beach Club serves dinner beachside(the small club has only 7 rooms, and is a 5 minute stroll up our beach). All Boathouse guests are invited and have full signing privileges for dinner, drinks, and wine. There is also a beachside honor bar at PCBC which is fully stocked with cold beer, wine, and your favorite cocktails. There is no need to carry cash or drive home when dining and/or enjoying a cocktail up the beach at PCBC.

We enjoy cooking and have equipped the Boathouse with a Jenn Air Convection oven/microwave, Jenn-Air Stovetop, Ice maker, and a 36,000 BTU Stainless Weber. There is Calphalon cookware, a Waring commercial blender, and an ice cream/sorbet maker. There are 12 foot decks which encircle the entire house perfect for reading, relaxing, cocktails, or just taking in the incredible views. There is a screened area of the deck for dining, reading, or a glass of wine. Ceiling fans are installed throughout the house and on the decks (11 in total). Although rarely needed, the house is also fully air conditioned.

The Boathouse has high speed wireless internet included.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The Boathouse, Molly S.,Jackson, Michigan Date of stay: December 20-28,2009

The Boathouse was exactly what the website pictures promised and more. It even felt roomier than the pictures indicated. Every item you've chosen for the house is of the highest quality. I never looked for a thing that wasn't available: flashlights, lighters, kitchen utensils, etc. The linens were wonderful and plentiful. We loved going through the guest binder and learning the ins-and-outs of Cat Island: where to eat, how to get around, sights to see, history, activities... Your insight there is priceless. We spent many hours on the Pigeon Cay beach and took long walks. I think we probably saw other people maybe a dozen times in the week we were there, but it was usually the same 3 or 4. No one ever bothered us or disrupted our peace and enjoyment in any way. We felt like we were in our own romantic world. The water was amazing; the sand like powdered sugar. The palm frond tiki hut even sheltered us from passing rainshowers. Leslie was a very nice hostess for a Christmas Eve meal at their resort. She also easily arranged a rental car for us, even had it delivered there at the resort. The Cat Island experience is very unique and one I will always remember. I'm sure we will visit again, although probably in the spring or early summer to avoid some of the inclement weather that can muddle up the winter season. I also have a few couples from work who are interested in the Boathouse, and I'm sharing great reviews with them, too. One of the couples is a pair of avid divers who spend lots of time around the Caribbean. Although they usually travel resort-style, they also seek out a getaway like your place every year or two. Watch for the Baldwins from Michigan, I bet they'll be your guest someday.

In closing, a lot of friends and family have asked would we do it again. I have said, without hesitation, yes! You have a lovely getaway spot on a special island. Thank you so much for allowing us to be your guests. We look forward to a chance to stay again.

Amazing property and location! - Highly Recommended!!

  • 5 of 5

We wanted to thank you for a wonderful stay at the Boathouse on Cat Island. The house has a wonderful location on what we thought was the best beach on the Island. The gorgeous beach at Pigeon Cay has sand like talcum powder and very calm seas even during windy days. The palapa provided us great comfort and sun protection and we ended up using it on many occasions. The location of the rental property is very nice being close to all things north and it’s north central location allowed us to venture south on the island just as easily. We found the market at Smith Bay to be the most well stocked and that was an easy and fun drive from the property. Also, venturing out back into Alligator Creek is a must. Though the bottom of the creek starts off just a bit soft, it quickly firms up to a nice firm sand base and you can walk and explore for literally miles through the creek system observing fish, turtles, baby sharks (don’t worry – they are afraid of you), bonefish, rays, etc. Bonefishing is excellent and you can find them off the heads of mangroves on either side of high tide. Wonderful area to fish and explore. The Atlantic beaches in the area are amazing as well. We especially enjoyed the beach about 1 mile south of the property. Go south on main road and take a left at the cell tower to the Atlantic. Gorgeous isolated endless pink beach with great snorkeling and fishing. The people of Cat are wonderful and we made many new friends up north at Pigeon Cay, Arthur’s Town, Bennett’s and Orange Creek. Orange Creek is a beautiful area. Don’t miss it. The house is very comfortable with all the conveniences you need for your trip. We especially enjoyed the open feel of the house with the breezes coming through. The deck and shower are wonderful. Leslie, Ned and everyone at the Pigeon Cay Beach Club were so helpful and friendly. It was nice to have them close by and Leslie helped us out a number of times. Thank you! We highly recommend the Boathouse and hopefully will be back to enjoy this beautiful area of Cat Island soon! We’ve been to numerous out islands and stayed at many places and the Boathouse and Cat Island are now very close to the top of our list! Thank you, Mark and Sarah!

Owner's Response: Kevin & Kelly, We are delighted your island holiday at the Boathouse on Cat Island was all you had hoped for and so much more. With so much first hand experience visiting the Out Islands of the Bahamas over the years, we really love the fact that this stay was very special for you. It sounds like you really got out and experienced Cat Island; it's beautiful beaches & fabulous crystal clear ocean waters, the reefs for snorkeling, back bays for kayaking, and flats for bonefishing on the fly. And of course, the warm and friendly locals! We are thrilled that you loved the Boathouse design and setting, and our stellar beach & palapa. Thank you for choosing to stay at the Boathouse, and we hope you return again very soon. Best, Mark & Sarah

A beautiful, comfortable fully equipped beach cottage. So nice to open all of the doors and let the island breeze fly through. The bed and linens are divine. The hammocks are perfect for relaxing. We cooked inside and out on the grill. We had everything we needed for dining in. Internet never failed. It is a short easy walk to the Tiki hut, overlooking a magnificent and deserted beach. The Pigeon Key Beach Club is quite close with an honor bar on the beach. We had dinner there several times. The steamed conck stew and conck fritters that were outstanding. The house has snorkeling equipment and beach floats.the outdoor shower felt great. Nice to have a washer/ dryer.Overall it was a beautiful, well planned, relaxing and very private spot. Recommend highly.

Owner's Response: Liz, Island life sounds like it suits you! We are ecstatic that you loved the Boathouse, our killer beach and tiki hut, and the comforts we put into the beach house. As you mentioned, the conch ceviche and fritters are to die for at Derrick's Conch Shack up the road. It is also nice having the Pigeon Cay Beach Club just a short stroll up the white sand to the honor bar to grab a cool one any time of day/night. Thank you for the lovely review. Best, Mark

Perfect get away. Just what we needed

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time and loved the Boat House. Leslie and Ned made it all easy for us, organising the car, fishing guide, cooking three times during the week we were there. The house was comfortable and charming. I had wanted to stay at the Boat House for years and it was just what we had hoped for.

Owner's Response: Annie, Sarah and I are so thrilled that you enjoyed your stay at the Boathouse, and that you loved the privacy and beauty of our beach. It's great that this "getaway" was everything that you hoped for. Guests love the that we have property managers Leslie and Ned on-island to answer any questions, organize a fishing guide, direct them to the local hideaways, and even stock the fridge before their arrival if they should so desire. Thank you for choosing to stay at the Boathouse, and we hope your return journey to the UK was pleasant. Hope to host you again in the very near future. Best, Mark & Sarah

Idyllic retreat in Bahamian nature

  • 5 of 5

We have been visiting The Bahamas for over 20 years and have stayed on five different islands. We love the seemingly infinite number of beautiful beaches to have to ourselves, the quiet, the friendly residents and the big open skies. Cat Island is probably our favourite, and The Boathouse is the place we find ourselves longing to return to the most.

We think it has the perfect balance between peace, quiet, privacy in a beautiful natural setting and friendly hospitality and assistance just a short walk away. Pigeon beach is clearly one of the best on the island. It's wide, white expanse and private Tiki hut is just over the dunes, the water clear and warm and is probably all most are looking for (though I personally cannot resist exploring all the fascinating and varied natural elements of the area). Meanwhile the Pigeon Cay Beach Club with its wonderful hosts is there to assist and to provide a wonderful dinner on the beach a few nights a week, should you choose not to cook.

The Boathouse is unique with its open concept, many windowed second story perch and 360 wrap around deck with an outdoor shower but we loved the feeling of being part of the environment. The big glass doors fold wide open and need to be secured when the wind is up, but this is easily done (with the help of some heavy coral pieces) and the sense of being in but out is wonderful. Given the reasonable rental price for something so distinct, we thought the house was beautifully while minimally furnished, and very well appointed so that cooking, and clean up was easy. Any glitches we ran into were immediately addressed. (The owner even called us from the states while we were there to get feedback on our stay.)

We were initially concerned about mosquitos since the doors and windows are not screened but we found that most nights the breezes are enough to keep them away and other nights we zipped up the outdoor deck screen which creates a sizable outdoor dining room.

For any person or couple who loves the natural world yet appreciates a clean, functional and beautiful space to return to in the evening, or a place to lounge, in a hammock, with a book, with the touch of a light afternoon breeze, on a deck or on the perfect beach, we do not know a better place.

Owner's Response: Jeannette & Mark, WOW......what a lovely review. Like you, we have been visiting the Out Islands of the Bahamas for many years (37+), and Cat Island is our favorite too. When we discovered and bought this property in 1999 we knew it was it; although we had to wait until 2007 to build the Boathouse. So thrilled that you loved the island, the house, and our beach. It is wonderful to share it with guests that see and get all that is Cat Island. An unspoiled paradise, untainted by tourism, with warm & wonderful islanders, beautiful white sand beaches and spectacular Gin clear seas, and relaxation at its finest. The Boathouse was designed to be a true beach house with wide expanse of 12 foot covered decks 360 degrees, floor to ceiling doors that can be opened to the sea breeze, and a very open concept. Thank you for staying with us, and we look forward to your return visit. See you soon, Sarah & Mark

Spectacular deck + gorgeous beach + lovely island=perfection

  • 4 of 5

We've spent the better part of 20 years staying on the Out Islands, and The Boathouse is really a special place. With 360 degree views of the bay and a bit of the ocean (contrary to another review, you can, in fact, see the ocean from the deck), it's almost like you're staying in a really cozy treehouse–except the bed is wonderful, and you have the benefit of a huge kitchen and an outdoor shower.

In terms of food, gourmet meals are not why you go to the islands, but Da Smoke Pot, Shanna's Cove, and produce from Danny are all great recommendations. Like others, we found it hard to tear ourselves away and did most of our own cooking at the house. If you plan your trip well (ask when the food boat comes in!), there is plenty to choose from at the grocery store. It's not Whole Foods, so if you need something specific, bring it. We forgot coffee (!) and had to make due with Maxwell House.

Other features that are worth noting: a washer and dryer (and a drying line) were so great to have at our disposal, the truck rental is one of the best cars we've ever had on an Out Island, and the caretakers from Pigeon Cay, Leslie and Ned, are wonderful, close by, and can help you with virtually anything you need.

And the hut on the beach–we virtually lived there! It was so nice to have a large, shaded area, just steps from that gorgeous water.

Owner's Response: Meghan & Bruce, As you also mentioned our beach tiki hut, the white sand beach, , and the Boathouse 12 foot covered decks are the three favorite spots guest's mention to relax on our property . The 2 king size hammocks and chaise lounges on the deck are also top choices. Glad you enjoyed the comfy king size bed, the Select Comfort is a very high quality and comfortable mattress system. As you also mentioned, guest's comment time and time again that having Ned & Leslie (our property managers) on-island to answer questions and make recommendations on snorkeling spots, the best kayaking adventures, grocery stores, wine & spirits markets, and best restaurants to check out is a real benefit. And they're great folks too. We shipped our Toyota 4 Runner over from Florida two years ago and it has been a great vehicle for the island; many guests take advantage of it during their week stay. We wanted to thank you for choosing to stay at the Boathouse, and were thrilled to hear you were looking to book again next year. We look forward to your return! Best, Sarah & Mark

Kayaking

Pigeon Creek, located just steps behind the Boathouse, makes for a peaceful, quiet trip through an aquatic wonderland. The creek is a nursery for sea turtles, baby sharks, bonefish, manta rays and other small fish. Paddlers can see them cruising along the sandy bottom or darting in and out of the mangrove trees. If you have never kayaked before, this is the place to learn. Our ocean kayaks are wide and stable and do not restrain your legs or body. They are easy to get in and out of and it is easy to learn for first timers.

Boating/Sailing & Diving/Snorkeling

Uninhabited cays, hidden coves, annual regattas. Diving Coral reefs. Blue holes. Walls. Caves. Shipwrecks. Dolphins. The variety of islands in The Bahamas presents a variety of diving experiences. Beginners and experts are welcome.

Deep Sea Fishing is a thrill with huge tuna, wahoo, dolphin, snapper and marlin. Bonefishing 'on the fly' is exceptional in Pigeon Creek,Smith's Bay & Orange Creek.

Note: there is one clinic on the island which can handle most illnesses or medical emergencies. The nearest major hospital is in Nassau.
