Private Garden Cottage- by the Beach

Bedrooms Studio
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 6 nights

About the property

Cottage, Studio, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Experience the incredible beauty of the north shore at the Garden Cottage in Haena, Kauai, located in the heart of the most beautiful 10 miles of the island. We are close to Tunnels Beach, and set between 2 of the top 5 rated beaches on the islands. Kepuhi beach is 50 yards down the driveway; directly behind is lush jungle hillside, the border to 1000's of acres of private nature conservancy land. All tucked into a quiet, secluded, tree lined cul-de-sac.

The private, cozy cottage interior features a high open-beam ceiling, wood floors, and tropical décor, along with cooking facilities. Outside is a private shower with a spectacular view of the jungle, private deck, barbecue, tiki torches to enjoy the evening, and all the style of old Hawaii.

If you are seeking a Honeymoon hideaway or romantic getaway...Relax to the soothing sound of rolling surf, enjoy a bonfire on your private beach, and just minutes away is Hanalei with restaurants, dancing and entertainment. You can walk the beach the entire final 2 miles to Ke’e, where the road ends and the famous Napali coast begins. Or you can walk the beach just 300 yards to the Hanalei Colony Resort, for the only (award winning) restaurant and coffee house on this part of the island. Or just take our beach chairs and walk the few steps to the beach out front!

We are an approved Kauai Vacation Rental TVNC #1052.

About Katie Howland

About the owners Doug, Bev, Miranda, and Katie Howland: Doug and Bev were first drawn to Kauai in the early 80’s, after many visits they finally decided to buy this wonderful property in 2006. Doug, a 35-year designer/builder, has spent the last 10 years personalizing the house. Bev, a jack-of-all-trades, has owned a health food store, opened a charter elementary school, run a motel, and managed their various properties over the years. Their youngest daughter Katie lives in Portland with her older sister Miranda. After a career in the arts, she now manages the family’s properties. Doug and Beverly now migrate between their properties in Arizona, Utah, and Hawaii. They like to hike, horseback ride, ski, practice yoga, whitewater raft, dance, and travel in their free time.

They also have vacation rentals in the Escalante Canyons of Southern Utah and in the town of Sedona in Northern Arizona.

Katie Howland purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Katie Howland chose North Shore

Doug and Bev were always drawn to the North Shore, when making the decision to put down roots, they couldn’t resist the best part of the island. They fell in love with the unique beauty of their home that balances both accessibility and seclusion.

What makes this cottage unique

There are many amazing natural wonders right out the front door (see above). This home offers the lush mountainous jungle of Kauai out the back door and the soothing beach and ocean out the front door.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a gem this cottage is! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and thank you for sharing part of your homestead! Loved the noises at night and all the birds in the morning. This place has everything we needed-especially-tranquility! Mahalo!

Secluded Garden Cottage

  • 4 of 5

The property was nice. It took awhile getting use to taking a shower outside. Definitely cuts down on the wet feeling if we took a shower indoors. The mosquitoes loved us. I did take my mosquito gear, which helped a little. Upon check out, I found the bug zapper in the closet, which I would recommend using as well. We wanted a place that felt secluded and that was exactly what we got.

All of the amenities were useful. The standing fan was our best friend. We got married on Tunnels Beach so the location was perfect. We spent a lot of time in Hanalei. For fine dining, we enjoyed dinner at Makena Terrace. For a hidden treasure, we had Sushi Girl, which is super close to the property.

The property is close to the highway, but it's set back far enough that we did not even hear any traffic noise. Earplugs were not necessary for the roosters. The first night of rain took some getting use to, by the next night, it lulled us to sleep.

After our wedding ceremony, we and the entire town did have a power outage for a few hours. I think it was from construction going on the highway. Hanalei had power so we were able to eat there. Enjoy!

Seclusion, relaxation, convenience: Perfect 10 year anniversary trip!

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed our stay at Garden Cottage. The cottage itself was small, but we were not lacking for any amenities. We were close to most of the adventures we did, close to swimming and boogie boarding in Hanalei Bay, snorkeling Tunnels and Anini Beach, hiking the Napali Coast, and so much more. We loved taking our coffee across the street every AM to catch the sunrise. Lovely place! Highly recommended for couples!

Darling cottage

  • 5 of 5

Oh, my. This cottage is so insanely adorable. It is a tiny, baby house with absolutely everything you need. We spent two nights, and, after having a horrible bed in the place we stayed at in Poipu were also delighted to have a nice, comfy bed. We enjoyed barbecuing on the deck in the midst of the jungle and enjoying all our meals out there. We really appreciated the citronella candles and tiki torches, which helped to keep the bugs away for the most part; however, bug spray is a must. We loved it so much that we just lingered over breakfast and didn't get to the beaches early enough to avoid the crowds, but still found a great spot at Haena Beach and both of us had an unforgettable experience of swimming with sea turtles, while out snorkeling. And the outdoor shower -- how cool. Also recommend getting sushi from Sushi Girl at the last little market before arriving at the cottage. It was the best poke we had the entire trip. Wish we had booked more than two days -- like, actually, the rest of my life.

Our peace of paradise on the North Shore

  • 5 of 5

Misspelling intended! :)

This little cottage backs up to a gorgeous jungle that photos just can not properly capture, and across the street is the beach. You have the BEST of both worlds here! It is close enough to Hanalei town to grab groceries or a bite to eat, but better still you are 2 minutes from Tunnels and 5 minutes from Ke'e beach (both of which can fill up very fast so being ahead of the crowd was a huge plus).

While the cottage is small it has just enough for 1 or 2 people to use a a comfortable home base for daytime adventure or relaxation. Upon arrival we discovered the front pull-screen was torn, but after a few phone calls we were able to secure the replacement for the next day even though it was a holiday - which was very much appreciated as the area is a bit buggy (it is the jungle after all!)

We have so many favorite parts of our stay at this cottage... the outdoor shower with the towering jungle overhead (what a breathtaking view!!), the evening rain bringing out the toads to eat the bugs (don't worry, they don't come up on the deck haha...), our coffee sunrises and sunsets at the beach across the street, falling into bed after a day of adventure to watch a movie on the TV with a surprising number of channels. I'm actually in tears as I write this, with the countless memories of our brief but amazing stay there!

If you are sensitive to heat, know that this place does not have AC (there are fans though). Honestly, in all our visits to Kauai we never even thought about AC until this trip so it may have been unusually warm this time; it was only an issue when we wanted to take an afternoon nap. Also, there is a beautiful white horse on the property next door which we loved seeing (sometimes up close when he was eating nearby plants in the morning), but got the occasional whiff of horse manure especially when it was cooking in the hot sun lol... not enough to detour us from staying there next time!

Although Kauai has plenty of roosters, we only had a nice quiet hen nearby so she did not wake us up. Loved seeing all the geckos & lizards, and hearing all the bird songs high up in the trees!

The owners, Doug & Beverley and daughter Katie, were very informative and kind. The local property caretaker, Patricia, was also attentive and helpful when we had questions about the property.

So with all that said, this place is rustic but comfortable and equipped with just about everything you need for your stay!

Cozy, comfy cottage

  • 5 of 5

We spent two nights at the garden cottage at the end of May and loved every minute of it. The only downfall is that the water at the beach out front has strong currents and is not recommended for swimming, but that has nothing to do with the property. The cottage is lovely and well appointed. The outdoor shower is a bonus. Such a beautiful view from the shower too. Overall great stay and can't wait to hana hou!

2nd Times' a Charm

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at the Cottage and it was just as wonderful as the first! As you can tell by the previous reviews people are very happy with this place. It is superbly clean, quite and private. So I will not go into too many details in that way. The information I would like to address is for you folks who have not rented before. This wonderful little place IS just like it is pictured. (no photo shop here) These are wonderful folk who will work with you and do their best to help you and inform you about where you are staying. They truly care about you having a good time, especially the property manager, she is a jewel!

It is hard to trust from faraway about the adventure you might be embarking, trust this property and the owners, you will be greatly rewarded!!

Be aware it is the North Shore, though beautiful it can be rainy...sometimes very rainy, but wait a while and it usually clears out. There are mosquitos, the tropical kind, (your bit before you know it) so use the bug juice of your favorite scent and keep the screens closed and you will be fine. These wonderful people have chosen to share their property so be kind, treat it with the care and respect it deserves. I hope this encourages you to try something new, you won't regret it!
