Good for Family getway
This is a beautiful old estate home. The grounds and pool area are very nice. We were five adults, myself and 4 adult children. Bedrooms were comfortable, all had a/c, 1 that did not work very well, however there was additional bedroom to replace. I will try to list the pros and cons.
Gazebo and pool area was great
Ground floor was beautiful (even with no windows. we found it very charming).
Kitchen was beautiful with all utensils etc. one could need.
Terrace on 2nd floor had beautiful view.
House was furnished nicely
Was not really clear that for rental, we had ground floor and 2nd floor (1st floor was occupied) this meant 2/3 flights stairs to 2nd floor where terrace and bedrooms were.
Private path to and from town, was not easy- a 20 minute walk especially if you had shopping to carry up.
Trip to Cinque Terre can also be a hassle when depending on trains.
I would say that this place is perfect for as family that wants to stay put and be away from tourist areas.
I would stay right in Cinque Terre when I return to this area.
I was very happy that I was allowed to use the lift (it is mainly for ), it saved me many steps.
Gorgeous villa in Lavagna!
8 of us stayed for just short of a week at this beautiful villa conveniently located a short walk from the quaint waterside town of Lavagna. The home is phenomenal - as if you’re staying in a museum! The top floor where the bedrooms are located has a magnificent view of Lavagna and the water; it was perfect for having breakfast. Most of the bedrooms had full bathrooms attached making it quite comfortable for all of us. There is a door on the property that opens out to a pathway that leads straight into the town making it very easy to get to shops, restaurants, and the train station. Tiziana was incredibly welcoming and provided us with everything we needed for a wonderful stay.
full of character and interesting property
Loved the 2nd floor balcony, we often had a wine and watched the sunset there. 4 couples made up our party. Plenty of space on ground and 2nd floor. Nice big cooker for meals and lots of crockery and utensils to make it easy.
Amazing villa, great location!
We spent a week at Villa Ekengren. There were 8 of us, 4 adults, 2 19 year olds and 2 16 year olds. When we pulled up to the house we couldn't believe it. The grounds are exceptional, giant bushes of rosemary and sage all around (very helpful when we cooked dinner later in the week!) and the pool area is as beautiful as it looks in the pictures.
We were greeted by Tiziana who was very accommodating and toured us throughout the home. She and Francesca were both available for us all week with any questions and helpful suggestions.
The house has been meticulously renovated, keeping it's architectural and aesthetic history. The main living floor is spacious and the kitchen had everything we needed. It's a little "cave like" as there are no windows on the living floor but that was okay. Up two flights were all the bedrooms and another living area. Best was the balcony which we spent many hours lounging on. All the bedrooms had their own air conditioning units which was amazing because it was tremendously hot when we were there. Everyone had their own bathroom and plenty of space.
Two of our favorite parts of the house. The ancient wood door leading to a secret foot path that takes you down to the town of Lavagna. It's about a 15 minute walk each way and a beautiful stroll past vineyards, and lovely views. The other was the BBQ... which was a grate over a wood fire. My husband loved cooking there! Definitely not a fancy gas grill, but super yummy!
Location wise, Lavagna is nicely centered near many places. We were able to take the train to the Cinque Terre very easily, we also took the train to Genoa. We were also able to drive to Santa Maria Liguria, and other towns. While you could get away without having a car, you could use taxis, it's best if you have one.
A few things to note about the house.
This is NOT a home for people with mobility issues. The "two" flights up to the bedrooms were not easy flights, the stairs are stone, and perfectly fine, but it was a lot of up and down. There is a small elevator for suitcases to get them up which was very helpful.
Also we had some concern about the "apartment" situation, that we didn't have the whole house. It was actually just fine. We really felt like we had the whole house, we had the pool and the grounds. The apartments on the "middle" floors were completely separate, and while we saw the other guests once in a while it wasn't invasive.
Dear Karen thank you for your amazing description of the villa. We was happy to give you a good stay in Italy.
Beautiful villa for large family holiday
Everyone loved this villa. The initial location was hard to find , sat nav never directed us to road entrance, signage would be helpful. There was more than enough space for 12 people. There were some minor problems , one with the air conditioning but nothing that spoilt the holiday. The walk into town was ok but could prove too much for much older people , especially in the heat. We would use this villa again.
Dear Lee, thank you for your kind review.
Tiziana and family
Fantastic in every way!
We are just home from a fantastic week at Villa Ekengren. My husband, myself and our four adult children stayed and found the villa to be perfect in every way.
Kirsty greeted us upon our arrival, and was fantastic not only with familiarizing us with the villa and the local area…but was also instrumental in helping us with restaurant suggestions, boat and scooter rental ideas, etc. She also made arrangements for us to use the beach club which is offered as a benefit of renting this particular villa.
We found the villa and the fabulous outdoor spaces just as advertised. The bedrooms and bathrooms are quite large, as are the common spaces. Kitchen is fantastic and very well appointed. We cooked home many evenings, and found everything we needed.
The pool area, ping pong table, outdoor shower, outdoor bathroom, firepit and pizza oven were all fantastic as well…and put to good use by all of us! Although the villa shares some space with another apartment, the outdoor gardens and pool area are only for the use of the renters of Villa Ekengren…so we had these spaces all to ourselves.
We loved our location on the hill above Lavagna. Because of the elevation, the villa enjoys cooling breezes and is nice and quiet. We utilized the walking path down to town many times (takes about 15 minutes)…and access to shopping, restaurants, the Lavagna train station, etc. was easy. The town of Lavagna is lovely, and has a real “local” town feeling. Access to the Cinque Terre region as well as Santa Margherita and Portofino was simple using the trains…but we felt that we were a bit out of the tourist “fray” by staying where we did.
We traveled via the Genoa airport, which is relatively small and therefore, very easy to manage as far as baggage collection, car rentals, etc. It it only about a 35 minute drive from the airport to the villa. Areas we visited (easily) from the villa were the Cinque Terre, Sestri Levante, Chiavari, Rapallo, Santa Margherita and Portofino.
We are truly hoping to visit Villa Ekengren again! Ciao!
VERY IMPORTANT: Via San Bernardo is an old pedestrian path, (long ago for coaches).
On gps navigator we recommend writing the address of a nearby house: Via Santa Giulia n. 45. After this house you have continued to go up the private street.
