2 Bedrooms + Den, 1 Bath (Sleeps up to 6)

BOOK 2 OR MORE NIGHTS IN NOVEMBER OR DECEMBER AND WE'LL TAKE $20 OFF THE NIGHTLY RATE!

OUR HOME: Our fully furnished and richly decorated 2-bedroom, 1 bathroom 'Beethoven's Hideaway' crowns the top of an historic California Craftsman duplex -- a 1000 square-foot treasure situated only minutes from the ocean (right down our cross street). The private patio offers a distant view of the silver-blue Santa Monica Bay and Mountains -- and you can pick lemons right off our lemon tree from the deck! The apartment is filled with Italian art and has

recently been exquisitely renovated with a respect for historical detail. It features new hardwood floors, Persian carpets, new furniture and fixtures. The apartment also offers central air conditioning available for an additional $10/day.

The large and airy master bedroom features casement windows (morning light) and a walk-in closet, reading nook and cedar linen chest. The equally large and sunny second bedroom, which can also be used as an office, includes a writing desk facing the casement windows (afternoon light) with a view of the neighborhood, and a beautiful studio upright piano in excellent condition (ideal for musicians).

Our cozy den features a new reclining armchair and sofa that can pull out to an additional guest bed, along with a widescreen hi-def television complete with DirecTV premium channels, DVD player, and a 5-CD stereo.

French doors in the den open to a spacious outside patio deck with a distant view of the mountains and ocean. The deck overlooks a charming backyard (lit by lanterns at night) that is home to our lemon and orange treesand framed by bougainvillea, a trickling fountain and an herb garden.

Laundry facilities are in a separate backyard cabin and are shared with the downstairs tenants. Entrance to the apartment is via a private stairway off the backyard.

OUR BACKYARD: The HIdeaway overlooks our bougainvillea and beautifully green and flowering backyard gardens with Italian fountains and fruit trees (a real hit with the hummingbirds!). After a day of sightseeing you can relax on the upper deck, pick a few lemons from our tress and make our own 'secret recipe' lemonade for a delicious salute to your day. Or, rustle up dinner on our charcoal barbecue, with all supplies provided. We also offer a laundry cabina in the backyard, with washer and dryer and complementary detergent and softener.

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD: Our lovely street and neighborhood is far less congested and noisy than properties right on the beach -- and you don't have to spend 20 minutes hunting for a space to park (as you do by the beach) -- WE OFFER FREE RESERVED OFF-STREET PARKING as well as COMPLIMENTARY BIKES to ride to the ocean or explore the neighborhood and the BUS TO THE BEACH stops right at the corner -- just steps from your door!

We are just minutes from Venice and Santa Monica Beaches and the famous Venice Canals, which are directly down our street. Venice Beach is a 20 minute walk, 10 minutes by bike. Cinemas, cares, shopping and freeways all within 5 minutes. The Santa Monica Pier and Promenade is only 9 minutes by car.

About James Ulmer

Entertainment journalist, author and filmmaker. Harvard College graduate. Passions include film, piano, literature (Shakespeare especially), Italy and travel. Speaker of English, Italian, some French and German.

James Ulmer purchased this house in 2001

Why James Ulmer chose Westside

A TERRIFIC AREA where the traffic and parking is not nearly as congested and stressful as at the beach traffic yet is only minutes away from the ocean. We're also very convenient to the cafes, cinemas, boutiques and shopping of the wonderful West side. A great location in what is already a world-class 'destination location.' Lovely backyard and patio deck, too!

What makes this house unique

Complementary reserved off-street parking -- a hard commodity to find in the beach area! Complementary use of 3 bikes to ride to the beach or explore the neighborhood -- or simply take the beach bus on the corner. Peaceful and quiet backyard terra-cotta patio (with charcoal BBQ) framed by bougainvillea and fountains looking out onto our lovely backyard garden and fruit trees. Complementary high-speed (6 megabyte) internet & Wi-Fi & 42' cable TV. During your home orientation when you arrive, James can also serve as your 'virtual concierge' to help you plan your stay in LA.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Hello James! Stacy McKearn is my daughter, and we got to have a wonderful tiime at the "dacha." One of the smartest among a lifetime of smart moves Stacy has made was to rent your place instead of staying at an impersonal hotel. And so close to me!! Which helped a lot when we forgot that special pan, or the coffee, or whatever. It was terrific -- and what a beautiful view, too. The lemon tree reminded me of the one in my grandmother's garden in Pozzuoli (near Naples). Anyway, we had a wonderful time. It's a great place.

Have a great New Year!

The place to be in LA !!

  • 5 of 5

First of all James is an amazing host, the house is great very comfortable and clean. When we arrived we had a great bottle of wine as courtesy, and also a folder with a lot of maps of LA with some travel recomendations .Definitely I would recommend it, and if I come back I will rent it again.

Perfect place in Santa Monica!

  • 5 of 5

Beethoven's hideaway really deserves its name! It is indeed a lovely quiet place hidden somewhere in the middle of Santa Monica, close to all touristic attractions of the area. Its proximity to Venice Beach makes it particularly interesting, though not accessible by walking (unless you are a very good walker!). On the other hand, the presence of some very nice restaurants in walking distance is a great advantage.

The apartment is very nicely decorated, perfectly equipped and very comfortable to live in. We stayed there for 3 nights as a family with young kids and everybody was rapidly feeling home!

A lovely apartment in a reasonable area of LA

  • 5 of 5

Beethoven's Hideaway is a nice upper floor apartment with all the facilities you need. There was even a complimentary bottle of wine on arrival. The host, James Ulmer, was very amenable.

The apartment gets rather hot, so it is necessary to switch on the air con, which costs another $10 per day. There is a car parking space, but it is quite difficult to manoeuvre the car backwards in or out, as you can't turn round once in. There is usually parking on the road outside, though. The eating nearby is largely fast-food.

In summary, the apartment is great, but you will definitely need a car to get around for shopping and quality meals.

Owner's Response: Thank you for these kind words, Geoffrey. I only wish you had taken the opportunity to check out the 6 highly-rated restaurants within easy walking distance of the house (2 of them just around our corner) that we had recommended in our welcoming book for our guests -- all of them ranging from delightful to excellent and none of them fast-food. (C&O Cucina is one of our favorites) Carpe diem!

Great weekend in L.A.

  • 5 of 5

The landscaping, availability of bikes, the decor, the helpful hints of where to go and what to do- it was all lovely. I felt like I had successfully chosen the right place for our stay.

A quirky property that had tons of personality.

  • 4 of 5

From the moment we booked the property the owner was amazing and could not do enough to ensure everything went smoothly in the whole process. On arrival, we were welcomed by the owner who ensured that everything was clearly arranged to make our stay comfortable and relaxing.

The location was in a quiet area of LA with all amenities within easy access.

Having travel a lot around the world this was great accomodation and made our trip to the USA complete.

Lucky us

  • 5 of 5

We really lucked out this time. We could not have found a more helpful and charming host nor cosier and more well situated accommodation. Beethoven's Hideaway does feel like a retreat from the big city but is also perfectly placed to explore all LA has to offer. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen well - appointed and there's lots of hot water - a must with two adults and two children. Right round the corner is a great breakfast spot ( rockenwagners) and a really good pizza place if you fancy staying close to home. We used the bikes and tootled all the way to Venice beach and along to Santa Monica - a great way to get a feel for the area. We would definitely recommend Beethoven 's hideaway and would have no hesitation in re booking .
