About Bruce and Meg Peterson
Meg and Bruce have lived in the area for 35 years. We raised both our daughters here, and they attended school in Taos. One is a physician, the other a geo-physicist, proof that the public schools are good! Meg is a retired elementary school principal and writer; Bruce is a manager at Los Alamos Laboratory. We are both private people and very respectful of the privacy of our guests, though we are available to answer any questions about the history, geology, wildlife, hiking opportunities, and our favorite restaurants. If you're into birds, Meg will happily take you birding along the Rio!
Why Bruce and Meg Peterson chose Pilar
We moved to Northern New Mexico three decades ago because of the stunning beauty, closeness to nature, and richness of its cultures. And we wanted to build a traditional adobe. At the time, we shared the romantic notion we could make a living here as a writer (Meg) and a cabinetmaker (Bruce). While we both had to get practical employment, we remain true to our roots.
What makes this House unique
We believe the views from the property are completely unique and stunning and probably responsible for my daughter becoming a geologist. The vastness of the panorama can be a bit overwhelming for those new to the area, but the region has been settled since the 1600s when the Spanish arrived. That said, the addition of our hot tub has been inspirational. Nothing like viewing all this natural beauty while soaking tired bones!

This was a perfect destination. It is quiet and removed enough to get away, but close enough to Taos to enjoy the town. It's also an easy drive to Ojo Caliente. Hikes along the river and along the gorge are a bonus, as are the big horn sheep herds The outdoor spaces (patio, porch and hot tub) are all private. The linens were very nice.
Gracious hosts. Amazing privacy & views. Couldn’t ask for a nicer place for a getaway retreat!
Alisa, you and your family were such thoughtful guests! We enjoyed hosting you and are thrilled you enjoyed the area. Northern New Mexico has so much to offer.
Amazing getaway in a snowy winter wonderland
This casita is very cute and comfortable and our family enjoyed it very much. It's a bit far from Taos but is quiet and pretty. One snowy day we went to the rio grande north recreation area and had an amazing hike to the top and along the plateau, coming down on an old road along the river. We will definitely come back to Taos, splitting our time between in town (the dreamcatcher) and the rio grande gorge casita.
Thank you, Jackie, for your review. This year is an exceptional one in terms of snow, which we are all thankful for here in the Southwest. And we hope you liked the soup!
Very nice house in a pretty area
The house was very nicely decorated and quite comfortable. We loved the views and the hot tub at night... The stars we're fantastic!
Bruce and I are so happy you enjoyed the stars from the hot tub! Safe travels.
Everything was great! The pictures don’t do it justice! Beautiful view in the mountains. Couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay.
Thanks, April! We loved having your family at the casita. And I (finally!) just updated the photos, though they don't do justice to the expansive landscape.
Our stay at the Rio Grande Gorge Casita may have been one of the best vacations we have taken. The casita was spotlessly clean and had everything we could want or need. It was super close to hiking trails and fishing access. Quiet nights in the hot tub under a star filled sky and incredible views during the daytime. Close enough to Taos for supplies and dinner out but still away from the crowds. Highly recommended!
Thank you for such a lovely review! We love the night skies, too, and are truly happy that you had the opportunity to experience the region.
Pilar is a quiet New Mexican village located on NM route 68 south of Taos. It lies adjacent to the Rio Grande river at the gateway to the magnificent Rio Grande Gorge and a gateway to the Rio Bravo National Monument. River sports, biking, hiking, and bird watching are a few of the summer activities. Winter skiing is nearby in Taos, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, and Sipapu. In addition to outdoor fun, the nearby towns boast numerous fine dining restaurants, art galleries, museums, and southwestern cultural points of interest. There are numerous festivals throughout the year including San Geronimo Day at Taos Pueblo, Indian Market in Santa Fe, and a Fall Balloon Rally in both Taos and Albuquerque.
Other Activities: Hiking, birdwatching, kayaking, rafting, Anasazi petroglyph sites, cultural and historical museums
Golf: The Taos Country Club is an easy, picturesque 15-minute drive from the casita. The Club features incredible 360 degree views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Taos mesa.
Ski: The southern Rocky Mountains boast several nearby ski resorts, including Taos, Santa Fe, Sipapu, and Red River. We are also a 4-hour drive from southern Colorado ski resorts. Our guests often pair a visit to southern Colorado with their stay here in northern New Mexico.
