We had the best times, decided to extend the stay and spend New Years. Judith was very pleasant to talk to and the property was unique gorgeous and has lots to offer; provided firewood for the charming fireplace, we could watch the horses outside, having fun playing the pool table and board games, it had basics for us to cook our own meals, in general we had good times and we will definitely plan more visits also on warmer weather.
love having people appreciate the farm as much as i do. come back please
Idyllic setting. Charming cottage. Charming host. Perfect location.
Spent a magical month in this charming, 'rustically'-appointed cottage -- although frankly, it's not really that 'rustic', as it has all the amenities of apartment/hotel suite living. A full kitchen, lovely bed linens and towels, etc.
Nestled in the rolling hills of Hudson Valley horse country, Applebrook Farm is just minutes from the chic shops and restaurants of downtown Rhinebeck, the nearby Dutchess County Fairgrounds, the train station at Rhinecliff and the world-renown Omega Institute -- my raison d'etre this trip. In other words, this little gem is within perfect proximity to everything.
The farm's owner Judith Fehlig -- a fascinating character in her own right, who along with two dear dogs and a cat named Daisy, resides in the property's larger, eclectic main house -- could not have been a more welcoming, gracious or attentive host. Indeed, I was even lucky enough to be a guest for dinner one evening. And the resident menagerie of ducks, geese, goats and horses add daily delight to the immense charm of this Applebrook Farm cottage experience.
I am already looking forward to my return visit in 2018.
a lovely and charming review from a lovely and charming lady whose return I look forward to with great pleasure
If you,re not into disrepair, unclean, and uncomfortable, and dilapidated furnishings this is not for you.
Not well kept - lacking many things listed as amenities and not clean
We had difficulties with booking online (owner not computer savvy) & she called us several times (communication issues).
Upon entering, had to pick up Oreo cookies off the floor. Also a dead leaf or two. Dust/dirt in corners.
Window crank broken on kitchen window. Kitchen was dusty/not cleaned. Had to wash dishes before using (dusty).
Dishwasher very stained/unusable. The door would not close because counter above it was warped/blocked door.
Gas grill on patio was full of charcoal ashes and no gas was available.
Weber grill on patio was not cleaned - had wood & charcoal ashes in it.
Furniture in living area was broken (desk), uncomfortable (log chairs), stained (couch cushions) or dirty (wooden loveseat cushion).
Closet in bedroom was where linens were stored – messy. Only two bath towels. There were a couple of beach towels. No hand towels or washcloths. Several piles of sheets/other linens (?) on shelves. Ironing board in closet was broken – no iron.
There was only 1/3 roll of toilet paper.
There were no paper towels for cleaning kitchen.
Kitchen appliances were old and not cleaned. There was a blender and coffeemaker, but no toaster.
Kitchen sink had no stopper for drain (so could not wash dishes).
Kitchen utensils were disorganized/dusty. Cooking utensils were also dusty & rusted in some places.
Pots and pans were minimal – not enough to cook meals.
In bathroom, there were limited places to hang wet towels. Soap was provided at sink, but not in shower.
The shower had enough hot water for ½ shower for 1 person. 2nd person had to take cold shower.
There was no internet service. Further, there was no cell service – you could use your phone sporadically in yard, but did not work in house.
No key provided to cottage – doors left unlocked when not home.
Because of reservations difficulties/communication issues with owner before we arrived, we were hesitant to ask for anything (overwhelmed owner ). She did ask if we needed anything, and then stated that she was going to go into her house, have a glass of wine, and go to bed. We abandoned the place next am after cold showers.
Positives: it is a very pretty farm, and there are horses/goats/ducks/geese all around. There were also a lot of people around (horse owners, men mowing grass and doing farm labor, etc.). It is secluded in the evenings when everyone is gone. The positives did not offset negatives.
We definitely don't recommend this property - would like $s back.
I was both genuinely surprised and angry at this very unfair and nasty review, as was my housekeeper who cleans the cottage every Tuesday whether occupied or not. and there is nothing for her to fix. the cottage has a front door key to lock, and was left open to accommodate arrival of the guests who I greeted with their 3 large dogs when they came. Cottage has a sink stopper, paper towels, an iron in closet, and a full tank of propane gas which makes ashes hard to come by.And I stopped eating Oreo's (?)when I was a child . this is real country, not apartment living or suburbia —hot water is carefully handled and it takes a few minutes to reheat with 2 showers indoors and out. cell phone coverage does not exist in house per Verizon and there is internet—ask for password if you can't pull it up. I sent them well documented emails and resorted to phone messages when I didn't see their car for a few days ,heard no dog barks and saw the NY TImes I left piling up to ask if they needed anything or if all was well. I did not even get the courtesy of a response. I have been on Homeaway since I retired from NYC to my horse farm years ago, I treat renters like guests and summer residents usually love it so they stay through the winter as last year's did through January. IT is tough to accommodate everyone to their liking—I removed most of the enamel pots being a cordon bleu cook myself because someone complained they were scratched. My daughter suggested I just go to KMart and buy cheap new kitchenware and towels to satisfy. Too bad but may I suggest asking for what you can't find or have a problem with and l try to make it a pleasant experience for all.
Clinton Corners Cottage
My one month stay at Applebrook Farm was "just what the doctor ordeded". It's a place of peace and tranquility. Watching the life of the farm would have been enough. But the cottage is so inviting and comfortable that I spent much of my time painting, reading, and thoroughly enjoying my surroundings.
However, minutes away, the Rheinbeck area offers terrific restaurants and activities one could be on the go and busy all day
This place could easily turn a city mouse into a country mouse.
Other Activities: HITS and Millbrook Horse Trials
Golf: Millbrook G&T and Dutchess close by---public courses available in Red Hook, Hyde Park
Ski: within 45 minutes of good mountains--hunter, wyndham, catamount ,butternut etc.
